A college degree is a minimal buyers' pass into today's job market, nothing more. Think of it as a cover charge at a club. Just because you pay to get in doesn't mean you can't wind up alone at closing time. There are also some folks that didn't pay (band/DJ, staff & their friends) that have a leg up on those that did pay. It's about what you do when you're inside the door that matters.
