Hi Luke,
I know this has probably been a roller-coaster couple of months for you. You've soared through the heavens as the creative Director of a AAA release DLC and you've had your wings melt when you flew to close to the interview lights.
I'm not going to bash or rehash the past. Let's chat about today's update.
Luke Smith: In our Strike the Dreadnaught reveal earlier this week, we showed some and told some about how we wanted Strikes to move forward into Year 2.
Strike replayability is augmented by variability.
Bosses with more interested combat phases and less vitality.
Strike-specific rewards.
E.g., Armor drops that look like trophies from the Strike boss
E.g., weapons that only drop from certain Strikes
No issues with any of this. Actually it all sounds like welcome changes.
But those aren't the only changes coming to Strikes. We've also looked at the programming/Strike playlists and made some changes there, too.
Nightfall
Our desired Nightfall experience is the weekly ritual where you get together with your friends for a test of thumbskill and allow players to optimize for gear.
Actually, many of us run them solo every week because there isn't an option to search for teammates.
Burn skulls motivate weapon rotation and now the Burn resist talents found on chest pieces will rotate armor.
I like the idea of burn resits on armor and hopefully this will inspire you all to stop putting up Nightfalls with no burns. This game is supposed to be at it's heart about having fun and weapon burns are FUN. The Nightfalls have never been harder without burns, but they can be tedious and dull.
The death penalty of being kicked to orbit often leads to players feeling forced to play too safe, rather than running through the world as a monster killing machine.
This is the first really intriguing thing in this update for me. The main argument against omm for the Nightfalls was always the RTO. Now that it's being removed, does that mean we can possibly search for teammates to run the Nightfall with?
Another thing we didn't like about the Year 1 Nightfall was how players could feel forced to play Nightfall as early as possible in the week to maximize the benefit from the Nightfall buff. So, we've shelved that buff until we can reform it into something closer to its original intent - a mark of prestige for having achieved something challenging. We've adjusted sources of XP and Reputation up to account for its absence.
This seems kind of odd and self-defeating. Pretty much the last 3 months, I didn't need any weapons or armor out of Nightfalls and my only motivation to run them was for the XP boost. By removing that, you're potentially removing a significant reason to keep running that content once we are fully geared.
Also, I find it more than a bit odd that you could write
we didn't like about the Year 1 Nightfall was how players could feel forced to play Nightfall as early as possible in the week
And yet it doesn't seem to bother you at all that players are forced to go outside the game to play your endgame content when they don't want to. It seems to me the lesser of those two evils is abundantly clear and it's not your door #1
Now Requires Level 40
Wiping no longer returns Fireteams to Orbit
Now uses 30 second time-out penalty for Death (same as Raid Normal)
I don't know that I like the "requires level 40" part either. My first Nightfall I ever beat was solo as a level 26 and it took me about 4 hours, but it was one of my favorite accomplishments in this game to this day. The only reasoning I could see for the level 40 requirement is if matchmaking is on the table for it... unless we can't hit level 40 without buying TTK.
Weekly Heroic Strikes
We've removed a dedicated Weekly Heroic Strike from the game this Fall. In its place we've added a new playlist: the Vanguard Heroic Playlist.
Not sure I see the point of this other than to get people to run the strike playlist. I can' also tell you right now that if this is going to run like I'm guessing, you're going to create a giant s**tstorm when it goes live.
By removing the weekly and putting the rewards into the first 3 runs of a regular strike playlist, what you are effectively going to create is a situation where rather than choosing to run the particular weekly like we have now (or skipping it if you hate the strike); people are now going to be quitting out of strikes in numbers not seen since Rockets McD*ckface in vanilla Destiny.
How many people do you think will run a Strike they hate to get their 3 in and how many quit out until they get one they like? Hope you all have thought this through because you've shown a staggering lack of foresight in the past when implementing changes.
Each week players receive bonus Legendary Marks from the Weekly Heroic Playlist. These awards are received at the Account level rather than the character level - as was the case with Year One Weekly Heroic Rewards.
We made this change to enable players to focus on a single character more, or feel less pressure to gear three characters at once for Legendary Marks.
Again, hopefully you've thought this through, because I think most people probably weren't feeling pressure to gear three characters, I think most spent time gearing 3 to have more to do in the game.
Requires Level 40
Removed the Weekly Heroic Strikes
Instead, accounts receive Legendary Marks for completing the first three Weekly Strikes
Removed the Weekly Cap on how many Legendary Marks can be earned.
Guarantee a Legendary Engram drop from a character's first clear of a Weekly Heroic Strike
Curious since it is a normal strike playlist you didn't come out and say if they require TTK or not and if so, what the rewards will be for people without the DLC.
Weekly PVP Ritual
Nightfall was built as a ritual experience for groups of three players in PVE. In Year 1, we didn't have a good weekly ritual experience for PVP players.
Once players have completed the PVP Intro chain on Lord Shaxx, they receive access to the Weekly PVP quests on Lord Shaxx and the PVP Quartermaster.
Each week, Lord Shaxx has a Bounty called "The True Meaning of War." Completing this Bounty each week (which requires completing the PVP weeklies) grants players Nightfall tier rewards.
This is a welcome addition and will hopefully give the regular Crucible more of a Iron Banner feel of importance, but all this was already covered last week. I'd much rather have more detailed information on the changes to Endgame PvE.
Daily Heroic/Daily PVP
It's important to us that Destiny remain compatible with real life. Playing multiple characters can sometimes feel like a job or a chore, the Daily Heroic and Daily PVP often felt that way. So we increased their rewards and made them an account completion. We want players to choose which characters they want to play on and earn Legendary Marks on.
This again is a quality statement from you but when you make the declaration that
It's important to us that Destiny remain compatible with real life.
It forces me to ask you, what in God's name is your defense of your matchmaking philosophy then???
Is my coming home after 14 hours at work and having to "complete the challenge of going outside the game to find a fireteam to be able to run endgame content" compatible with real life?
No Luke. It's not. In fact, I'm not sure anyone at Bungie has a realistic idea of what it's like to be a non-Bungie employee trying to play endgame content in Destiny.
Playing multiple characters can sometimes feel like a job or a chore
You think that's a job or a chore? Try having to troll forums or LFG sites EVERY SINGLE TIME you want to run an endgame activity. Seriously Luke, do you all ever read these forums at all?
Did we mention that you’ll need to confront the immediate threat first? Oryx lies between you and these challenges. You'll need to survive his wrath to partake in the new endgame.
Say what?
You really are going to end with that? So what does that mean, because people are freaking out they'll have to beat the raid to play endgame (unlikely, but can easily be inferred from your remark). Are you saying that unless we purchase TTK that all endgame will be completely locked for us?
Here again we have a problem with clarity of thought. When something sounds nice in your head, it's always nice to read it and make sure it's not vague ominous corporate-speak that is going to piss off half the internet.
So maybe you should think about telling us exactly what that means and exactly how you are or aren't going to bend us over to buy TTK rather than making us want to buy it for the quality of content.
Thank-you, we hope to hear some clarification soon.
-
Oryx prob has a spot in the story where he "lies between us" and then we do endgame after story if that's even a thing. Otherwise we do bounties and earn XP and become 40s with no skill at all then we raid and endgame cuz everyone is a 40 yaaaaaay

1 Antworten
It's important to us that Destiny remain compatible with real life. It forces me to ask you, what in God's name is your defense of your matchmaking philosophy then???
Yeah, no really. It makes you wonder if at some point they started to work on creating OMM/LFG for the game and just haven't made an announcement or if at some point they decided to just dig in their heels for no reason other than being obstinate, kind of like how a child will refuse to do something long after they've given up disagreeing with it.

4 AntwortenBearbeitet von Bungolickstaints: 8/28/2015 2:17:47 PMLol @ Luke - "Get together with your friends to run the nightfall" Me - "ide love to but there are no Matchmaking options in your stupid game." Gonna keep running it solo and never buying any of their pos DLC every 4 months. (I know, this means I might get one nightfall per month) I hate this game now but I can't even sell it because it's worth like $5....GameStop is overflowing. Luke Smith is horrible btw. He is so out of touch with his players that it's pathetic.

6 AntwortenBtw, have you guys seen this? https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/150002555/0/0 Even without TTK, we have to download a mighty 18GB patch for the game, on top of what is already installed and before you add whatever TTK would be.

Well done.

Bump because this is logical and makes sense. That's lacking around these parts.

Bumpity!

5 Antworten
Did we mention that you’ll need to confront the immediate threat first? Oryx lies between you and these challenges. You'll need to survive his wrath to partake in the new endgame.
This bit. This bit right here worries me more then any other peice of new said before this on TTK. So, if we DON'T have TTK, no endgame for us? **** ******* ******* *********** ******* **** ******** **** ******** ********* ************** ******** WITH A GODDAM PIG!

Oh Luke. I love your raid work. But for -blam!-s sake don't bring the rest crumbling down around you.

1 AntwortenI truly enjoyed being motivated to load up my titan and Hunter. But I guess they just want us playing one now? Really a shitty update this week. I was on board with most changes so far. Even pre ordered after last update. Sure some stupid stuff but overall liked most decisions. Everything in this update has me regretting my decision now. They really do want to chase us away don't they?

7 AntwortenBearbeitet von Urgblatt: 8/28/2015 6:06:52 AMCongrats on your ban expiring Lost Sols, nice to see you're still ruffling Bungies feathers. ;-) Removing the XP boost gained from completing a Nightfall is being done to slow down people's ability to rank up their Guardians. Getting rid of the Weekly Heroic mission and putting in a Heroic Strike playlist stinks as well. I bet you that this new Heroic Strike playlist will be locked behind a paywall too. There was no mention of whether we will still earn strange coins from completing the first 3 Strikes on this new playlist either. Your last point about having to beat Oryx before you can even access any of this content is a real kick in the balls. Are Bungie saying we have to buy the Taken King DLC and beat Oryx before we can even be able to run a Nightfall/Daily Heroic/PVP heroic?

1 AntwortenBearbeitet von Sub Umbra Floreo: 8/28/2015 12:08:32 PMYet another update that leaves as many questions unanswered as those it answers ... all while creating new questions. Some of the changes to the Nightfall and the now Weekly Heroic Strike Playlist that give rewards at account level would definitely benefit those who play less than three characters (I only play one), but I have to wonder how this sits with those who - up till now - ran three characters, whether out of feeling they had to ... or just because they wanted to? I knew not playing extra characters would limit the chances I have a specific rewards (Nightfall, Weekly, Raids) - and that's a choice I was fine with. Just as I was fine with anyone who did want to put the time and effort into maintaining a full set of characters getting the same reward chances for each individual character. It sounds like this effectively cuts their guaranteed reward opportunities in a given week by two thirds. Some of what was said has a positive feel to it, and I do hope for the best - for ALL players. But yet again a lot of what was said was vague ("You'll need to survive his wrath to partake in the new endgame") and even perplexing ("It's important to us that Destiny remain compatible with real life.") given how little actual and factual information we've been provided with up to this point - as well as when taking Bungie's existing approach to things into consideration. Though there are unfortunately several 'answers' in there that have the definite ring of removing even more access to existing content via further DLC lockouts (with pushing DLC sales being the true 'endgame' goal). Here's hoping that I'm wrong.

Bearbeitet von JEDI KNIGHT 360: 8/29/2015 5:04:13 AMLuke really shouldn't be making any more large community appearances I have no doubt he is a great creative director and a awesome guy who's excited for TTK but interacting with the community is clearly not his strong suit he's like a weird family member who is a excellent cook but every time you put him in a large social gathering to show off he does something extremely embarrassing bungie please just have Luke do what he does best and work in the studio on projects and leave the actual community interaction and promotional stuff to people who do it better people like Deej

3 AntwortenI've just now realized; I've always been able to rationalize my grind by telling myself 'well at least I'm working towards something lasting' as in leveling more gear. At least I'll always have that gear until I choose to get rid of it. But that's out the window now. I realize as I live exactly 2 minutes from work. So I'll come home at lunch, like now to grind iron banner and I realized, wait, no I'm not working towards anything at all! That kinda sucks. Hmmmm...... Just my random thought sorta kinda relating :) sorta.

2 AntwortenI agree with your criticism of Bungie's murky gray communication. I'm still excited about TTK. From what I have read the good will outweigh the bad, which is consistent with my entire Destiny experience up to this point.

25 AntwortenOh my god the Internet hates bungie so much it's comical.

1 Antworten
Curious since it is a normal strike playlist you didn't come out and say if they require TTK or not and if so, what the rewards will be for people without the DLC.
Bungie has been purposefully vague as to what will be available in Year 2 for players who don't buy The Taken King. Of course DLC purchasers don't want to see vanilla "Destiny" players receiving the same rewards and *gasp* reaching level 40. And of course vanilla "Destiny" players do not want to be locked out of end game rewards especially when Bungie is going to make all of the Year 1 rewards obsolete. But it's this kind of obtuse rhetoric that makes the community so angry and distrustful of Bungie.

1 AntwortenI know this has probably been a roller-coaster couple of months for you. You've soared through the heavens as a creative community voice that many resonate with and you've had your wings chopped off when you flew to close to the trolls. Let's jump right in I agree with everything you've said. Thanks and hope to hear from you soon... ...but like normal people soon, not community manager soon... ... so hope to hear from you normal soon...

The part about defeating Oryx before being able to do nightfall etc.... I would assume this just means finishing the story side of things, similar to capturing skolas and destroying the crystal in dark below. That being said they could be a bit clearer with what they say. Just like the whole exotics fiasco, why not just say straight up that we will eventually get all our exotics just not right at the start of TTK, could of avoided a lot of butthurt amongst everyone.
-
2 Antwortentaking away the buff after completing the NF means more time to upgrade stuff, in other words grind more guardians! thanks, I guess.... I'm with you with matchmaking and not being kicked back to orbit anymore, as they literally said that was the main reason for not having MM. don't expect a reply to that any time soon though... in general, this is their attempt to fix something that is not broken, doesn't make a lot of sense to me but hey, it's just me

3 AntwortenDropping that Nightfall buff is what Destiny is all about. It's the philosophy that longer play times equals more enjoyment. Just another bs way of extending play times to add to their stats they love to show. They easily added 1,000s extra gaming hours to the stats and after the first month there will be a weekly update about how many hours the community put into TTK. Can't have players maxing out stuff quickly again.
