Not sure how many of you know this so I decided to make a thread. Link to article.
Update: Check out this new interview with DeeJ and Urk via IGN! They flat out confirm that you won't get reset to level 20. (Around 18:00 minutes in)
Update 2: You will be your highest level achieved. That means taking off your higher level armour before the release will not drop you down to 20.

Interviewer: Will you get reset to level 20?
Urk and DeeJ: Nope.
Urk: If you're a 32 or level 34 (examples) that's what's going to show when you start up The Taken King.

I hope that clarifies everything.
There have been many worried or curious as to whether your level would drop to 20 when The Taken King launches. It will not. You will automatically become the level that your armour equates to.
DeeJ also confirmed that players who have hit the existing cap of level 34 will “take their first steps” in The Taken King at that same level. Players who are of a lower but still end-game level (say 26, which you could achieve in vanilla Destiny without raiding) – will still be able to play The Taken King content, and will level up quickly.
What this seemingly means is that your experience-based level will jump to level 34 if your Light level when TTK drops is 34 (from what we understand). That said,
Bungie has not yet finalised what the entry level for The Taken King content will be, DeeJ added.
So everything is still subject to change and tweaking. I hope that clears things up for everyone.
Edit: Here's my understanding in a breakdown for more clarity:
"Hard" Levels (my term): 1-40 — levelled up through experience.
Light level: This is your power indicator. While you might be level 40, you can still be under the recommended Light power level for an activity, meaning it'll be (a bit) hard for you.
As of The Taken King and update 2.0, your Light level will be calculated based on your total attack and defence statistics rather than the combined total Light attributes of your armour. Some missions will have recommended Light levels, to indicate whether the gear you’re wearing is up to the task.
Also, here's an interview you may not have seen. It barely has over 50,000 views!
IMPORTANT
For those still unsure if what I'm saying is confirmed, hear it from DeeJ's mouth in this gamescom interview. This is also the video linked above.

6 AntwortenThat doesn't make any sense. We are all level 20 now. What happens if I have 32 armor on instead of 34 when TTK drops? I'm automatically a 32 because I was wearing my crucible loadout?
-
37 AntwortenI'm betting that we will all be level 20 and the TTK story line starts at level 21. All new kinderguardians will have a consumable to get them to level 20. If u r a level 34 now u will be a level 20 with 1782 defense and 365 weapons which is how they will use the light level, a combination of defense and attack. You will need to grind from 20 to 40 and the new raid doesn't come out until the fall

I think most people are failing to realize that light level, and xp level are going to be two entirely different things when TTK hits. Everyone's going to most likely start at xp level 20, but your light level is going depend on the gear you have, combining your defence and attack stats. So people that have the best gear right now, will still be at an advantage when the expansion hits, but everyone is going to begin the grind to xp level 40 together. Also, in regards to the requirements for current strikes, and raids I believe they will adjust them to reflect the new system. So no need to worry about being dropped to a level too low to play the current content.

2 AntwortenBearbeitet von KidSixXx: 8/7/2015 2:51:33 PMHoly crap no one is going to lose levels. We're not going to drop to Level 20 because the hard level cap is already at 20. The cap is being raised to 30 and Light levels are going away. The XP earning model is going RPG where have to grind mission and task queues for experience instead of having levels jumpstarted by armor and the new sub-class will be unlocked via mission trees instead of experience. Don't be afraid of the level jump; be afraid of the MMO-ish fetch it quest mechanics you will have to deal with.

1 AntwortenConfirmed, we wont know until we know.
-
So not to again compare this game to WoW, but light levels are basicly gear score. Sure you can hit lv40, but if your gear score/light level does not match the correct levels, the you are the same as being under leveled. What was the point of changing light levels to hard levels if they are still a required thing basicly, or is this a precursor attempt to put trading in at some time since our gear is no longer directly tied to our levels?

I agree I think you are on the forums a lot and your very insightful at letting people know the new content and how it works. Also other subject you've been helpful for that I've seen in past threads so thankyou

2 AntwortenSo lets say a player has three hunters at light level 20 and only one set of armor that gets the light level up to 34. What level will their 2nd and 3rd characters be when TTK drops?
-
Thanks Charlemagne! You do good work on this forum. :)

Petition to start at the level we want

4 AntwortenI listened to an interview where he was asked that very question, n I never heard a definitive answer from him. just things like "you'll be good to go" or explaining the new process again

Bearbeitet von CannyJack: 8/7/2015 2:34:04 PMWeeeeelllllll....the answers aren't quite that cut and dry. What DeeJ said is "You'll take your first step into The Taken King at the level you have attained," and when the interviewer asks, "Will my level 26 warlock be level 26 when I start," DeeJ's response isn't "yes," it's "you're good to go, but there's things to do to reach higher levels." So really, it seems like we'll be level 34, especially since he says they've learned that they need to be respectful of players' time, but...he didn't actually say that.
-
But if your mentor now, you'll be
ninja in TTK
3 AntwortenIt doesn't make sense if you are reset to level 20 when TTK comes out. So are they going to reduce the VoG and Crota's End level requirements to 20 too? If so, there will be a 20 level difference between the old raids and the new one? That won't make any sense.

All the beating around the bush is weird. For months now Bungie have been trying VERY HARD to get you to a minimum level of 30. They even offer you a year one bonus for getting there before TTK drops. I know a few people who have played the beta for TTK and all of them hint very strongly that it's level 30 minimum for the content and this is why Bungie have been pushing that level. I'm guessing that the only thing that will change this is if too few people get to that level in time. However it would be pretty silly to have TTK content start at a lower level than HoW content wouldn't it!
-
So it's not based off your light level prestige?
-
4 AntwortenI don't understand what is so hard to understand. If you are light level 34, you will begin TTK at hard level 34. Light will be used to determine "how powerful you are". As for newer players, they'll start TTK at whatever level Bungie decides to set as the threshold, since, as DeeJ said: "It is something they are constantly refining." And, here's the kicker... they don't have to. That's right, folks. New players don't have to start TTK and skip the rest of the game, they can play the rest of the game before starting TTK. Another way of saying it since some won't understand what that means: Should a new player choose to use the consumable provided, they will begin their journey for TTK at the appropriate level. Should they not use the consumable provided, they will not begin their TTK at the appropriate level and play through the game like Year 1 players. Now, what sense would it make for him to say that about starting at the level you've attained and that level end up being hard level 20? It doesn't. In response to the comment of the interviewer starting TTK at 26: "There's things for you to do, there's missions for you to play and you're going to start to elevate above level 26 very quickly." What is difficult about that? Do you pay attention or only hear what you want to hear to make a mountain out of a mole hill? Lastly,
You chose to sink 1000 hours into Destiny, if a new player gets an equal grimoire score, similar progression and achievements, etc. in 200 hours of play with 3 Ghorns after they defeat the raid boss and complete the bounty steps to earn it like most Year 1.... life, uh, finds a way.
1 AntwortenStill can't quite get my head around this. Looking forward to physically seeing this in action for actual clarity. I will be pissed though if I have to straight up be put down to 20, no other MMO decreases your level to bring you in line.
-
2 AntwortenThey will give 1 character level boost (your main) so you can start doing the new content. The other characters you may have are going down to Lv20.
-
I TRIED TO TELL THEM
-
6 AntwortenMy personal theory. When logging in to TTK for the first time the game will prompt you to equip gear to reach light level you desire, once you equip you confirm and whatever light level you geared to becomes your new experience level to begin TTK
-
This is the most glaringly obvious topic I've ever seen created.
-
I would assume there will be new gear that can only be equipped at hard levels higher than 20. The best armor can probably only be equipped when you reach hard level 40. Just like the original leveling system with exotics and legendaries.
-
1 AntwortenIt really depends on what he meant by “take their first steps” I envisage some kind of Rocky type fall from grace followed by a long road to recovery leading to us ultimately taking out Oryx, So my prediction (and it is just that) is that we we start as we currently are for the first mission or two and then something will happen to push us back to level 20. We then push on from there and build back up to hard level 40 while also getting new gear to deal with the new way in which "light" works. If we start at 34 and go from there then it is going to feel like one hell of a slog between levels.
