This century we will be facing the three toughest challenges humanity has ever faced. Overpopulation, Water shortages, and Climate change. Now governments and businesses are already beginning to address the water problem partially thanks to all the attention California has been getting these past couple years. Overpopulation in the long run may solve itself as a few study's have shown a downtrend in pregnancy and birth by 2050 leading to a 2.71 reproduction rate which is considered an equilibrium rate at which our society will stay at the same population once it drops to match that equilibrium. But some study's also show a rise in population still in which case it will be a problem worth starting to address sometime around 2030-2040 but that's not the issue im trying to get a poll on. The third issue, Climate Change is the biggest threat to humanity today with it causing the melting of the west Antarctic ice which is land ice and would cause see levels to rise. The acidification of the ocean which will kill ecosystems and push many animals to extinction and push many more to the brink. The permafrost (frozen ground) throughout the world is starting to melt and contained in that permafrost is more CO2 which will be released into the atmosphere if it continues to melt. It's predicted to have 3x the amount of CO2 than what's in the atmosphere right now and at our current pace its predicted that 70% of all permafrost will melt by 2100 meaning it will add 2/3 of the carbon trapped inside the ground into the atmosphere. What were headed towards is another great extinction but not one like the dinosaurs, we're headed toward a fate we made ourselves and are taking the other creatures gifted this planet along with us. We were gifted this great planet to cultivate not to dominate. Please give me your opinions as well but also please no non-believers as there's obvious proof that climate change is happening and that humans are majority to blame.
Edit: it's sad to see a lot of people don't see the importance and danger of climate change
Edit: happy to see more people visit this post and give their answer to the poll but I'd also like to hear more opinions on the subject
Edit: I know climate change is also a natural thing but not at current rates we need to slow it down

18 AntwortenThere are bigger problems right now then climate change. If that was the only problem in this world, this may be a valid thread but right now, America does not have the money to try and change the environment we live in. ISIS, Boko Haram, National Debt, the messed up borders. These are all problems that need to be fixed before we turn our eyes towards spending money on trying to change the environment...

1 AntwortenI voted no. *prepares for torrent of language directed at my stupidity* People reading that I said "no" will in most cases probably form an opinion of me without even considering my reason for saying so. I hope not. Let me explain... Before I say anything else, I'd like to point out I do not in any way doubt that climate change is happening. My main objection to the massive concern regarding climate change is this: that our concerns are based off an incredibly small portion of the world's life and while it is not wrong to concern ourselves, it seems to me to be premature to make such claims when we have so little data to go off of. A mere 100 years ago we were going through a climate change as well (according to NASA figures) but in the opposite way, there was a global cooling. What was it that caused that? Another thing that is interesting to me is this: we claim that CO2 is causing global warming or is at least related to climate change, but this can be viewed as a good thing as well. I've worked in a greenhouse and they had such a shortage of CO2 that they had to either produce it or truck it in so that the plants could continue growing. Why would CO2 be viewed so badly when we are also concerned about the growth of forests? A higher concentration of CO2 would encourage faster growth. Of course you don't want too much CO2 because that can cause burning, but the CO2 levels in greenhouses are often 4x the average PPM in the world and are necessary for the growth of the plants. So pretty much what I'm saying is that with such a small amount of data and a supposed cause of climate change very much needed for the growth of plants and trees, I find it difficult to follow that we have created this issue or can change it. Naturally we should be responsible and not harm the environment if we can help it, but how can we change something so massive back to normal when we really have no idea what normal was in the first place? Ok I'm ready for the hate now :/

The issue I take with it is that the earth has been a round for a very very long time. We have only been studying the climate for a few hundred years. We don't know what happened before we began studying it. And we don't know what will happen in the future. So saying that humans are causing climate change ( based on the relatively short record that we have ) is ridiculous.

1 AntwortenThis thing called global warming/cooling js a hoax. It is actually just our planet distributing heat across its surface.
-
17 AntwortenI was worried about global cooling in the 1970's when it was going to kill us all! I was worried about global warming in the 1990's when it was going to kill us all! I was worried about climate change in the 2010's when it was going to kill us all! I'll be worried about "the next scam" in the 2020's when it will finally kill us all!

15 AntwortenClimate change, maybe an issue in 500 years. Over-population, about 1,000 years away from that problem. Water shortages, *looks out window* nope great lakes are fuller than ever. Now the rest of the world, tough shit, should have planned ahead.

Read somewhere that a single volcanic eruption released more carbon gases then all of the world's vehicular emissions combined. I have yet to truly think it makes that much of a difference.

3 AntwortenWhere I come from we call it weather, and yes, it changes.

I do to a certain extent.

Things will only change if it starts to affect the profits of the large corporations as they hold all the power.

Ice age here we come

Climate change is an issue, but it's trend that's been reoccurring since the planets formation. Do I think humankind is accelerating it via carbon emissions? Yes, but it is something that has happened many times in the lifespan of the earth. Still that doesn't mean there shouldn't be an effort to reduce our emissions significantly.

2 AntwortenYour an idiot if you believe in global warming, there is no evidence of it
-
1 Antworten
cause see levels to rise.
*sea But yes climate change is and important issue and should be stopped.
-
Of fvcking course.

33 AntwortenYoure a fucking moron if you dont consider it an issue.

I feel so great to get to grow up in a world with so many problems that my parents generation caused.
im not trying to be a smartass, but I must say from what I hear there are huge challenges caused by these kinds of things that my generation is going to have to deal with
4 Antwortenearth will survive we not maybe good thing not?
-
i know its happening but i dont care because ill be dead before its really bad
-
Meh, not so much. Whatever helps you sleep better at night.

3 AntwortenClimate change is a natural Earth cycle. The real thing to worry about is methane leaks from the ocean floor.
-
Solar and wind energy are both great ways to replace fossil fuels
