Why is Halo 4 the "Worst Halo?"

Okay, so before you read anything else, if you're a hardcore Halo fanatic, you should probably leave, cause I'm going to say stuff that'll piss you off. If you are a Halo fanatic and decide to read ahead anyways, please recognize that this is my OPINION nothing more than an OPINION. Are you gone? Good! Ever since its release, Halo 4 has gotten quite a lot of hate from the community, which I can't imagine why. The game looks amazing, it has a beautiful soundtrack, great gameplay and a fun campaign. Yes there are problems with it (i,e no playable elites, no campaign theatre, etc.) but that doesn't make it a bad game. I've spent hundreds of hours playing with my friends in creative custom games and competitive matchmaking, it's the only game I really play multiplayer in besides Battlefield. So tell me, why does everyone hate on it so much? [spoiler]Any hate comments or whatever will get a reply from me saying OPINION[/spoiler] [spoiler]YOU HAVE BEEN WAAAAAARNED[/spoiler] Edit 1: Wow, lots of replies, and such mixed feelings about it. "It's amazing" or "it's the worst Halo ever" it did this wrong, it did that right, all sorts of stuff. I do like that there are some sensible people in the comments who actually know what they're talking about, and not just hating on H4 because everyone else is.

    I don't understand it either. I had a fantastic time playing halo 4 and still do. It's only when you go on the forums do you find out it was supposedly a "terrible game". The main reason I believe people dislike it is because of the fact that it isn't halo 2/3. People love to hate remakes/continuations of the classics. I will say though that halo 5 looks very good so far. 343 needs to just expand on the ideas and concepts of halo, not create new ones.

  • Halo 4 was a good game, but a decent Halo game overall. It had a good story and an alright soundtrack. My problem is with the multiplayer. 343 brought in so much unnecessary shit. Like ordnance drops(killstreaks), custom classes which ruined the balance Halo is known for, and a lackluster co-op experience that reuses the same areas. Guardians looks like a step in the right direction, I just wish Halo 4 could've been more then what it was.

  • A lot of people will tell you that the haters wanted a copy of halo 2-3, but that thinking is just as arrogant as the blind haters. There is a difference between innovation and rewriting the formula. Innovation is where you take what works, improve upon it and keep it up with the times. Something that is innovated still has the same core, with a lair or new on top. Halo 4 did not innovate anything. 343 completely changed how much of the game played, turning what was once a high-skill arena shooter into more random class-based shooter. Rather than fix previous issues, 343 decided to change the game to where those issues were now intentions. It played quite a bit different than any halo game before it, which turned out to be a bad thing. The core gameplay had been changed. Now halo 5, on the otherhand, is a good example of innovation. 343 has taken the classic arena halos, and modernized it with improvements to movement and mobility to bring it into the modern age. Halo 5 is what halo 4 should have been from the start. [spoiler]other issues with halo 4 include: the extremely ugly armor, the complete lack of custom games (thus a terrible custom games scene) irreversible changes to ctf, griffball, and infection (flood), removal of most classic or loved halo gametypes, lack of firefight as an option, Spartan ops not being anything special, forge being worse than reach, [/spoiler]

    As has been stated: the multiplayer didn't feel like Halo. Also, the soundtrack wasn't fitting for a Halo game, and the Forerunner architecture looks absurd. Previous Halo games showed everything Forerunners made to be onyx black and refined, not -blam!-ing crazy with thousands of jagged spikes and lights. Not to mention this "superior" story Halo 4 has stepped on the previously established universe and completely rewrote the personalities of multiple characters. It's a fine enough game on its own, but an absolute travesty to the Halo series.

      • Let me start with I loved halo 4, not my favorite multiplayer, but I still loved it. The reason it gets so much hate is because it wasn't a direct clone to halo 1-3 but if it would of been clone people would hate it for being a clone, it's a lose lose situation. The people are never happy.

      • Definitely wasn't bad or garbage. It was the least popular halo game out of the series though. Campaign was good, multiplayer it was ok. Spartan ops it was there.

      • I hate people that criticize halo 4. Yes I agree that it is different than the other halos. But that doesn't make it a bad game! It's my 3rd favorite campaign behind halo reach and halo 2. And before you rage I HAVE played all the halo games.

        Because. 343 didn't learn a damn thing after taking over Reach for the amount of time that they had it. In other words. When 343 took over Halo they had a chance to push Halo in a new direction... What did they do instead? They continued to push that peice of shit matchmaking system on everyone.. Thus continuing every problem that has plagued Halo since Halo 2. Quitting, douchebags, too many hoops to jump through to play custom games, etc. If 343 had decided to grow some balls and get a server browser implemented. It'd be a completely different story today. MCC would actually be worth purchasing. Their first True Halo game and they were too scared to step away from the multiplayer foundation that Bungie had left behind for them. If I had taken over Halo. A server browser, with custom games being the PRIMARY form of entertainment... would have been the first thing on my list. And to them, Custom games is more like an afterthought. Which is evident by the fact that Halo 5 will probably still not have a server browser, and custom games will still be limited to a friends list... Which in my case means... I'll never get to play custom games. Because noone on my friends list plays Halo anymore. AND I AM NOT ADDING YOU -blam!-ING RANDOM MOTHER-blam!-ERS TO MY LIST JUST TO PLAY A CUSTOM GAME! I'm not going to go into matchmaking. something that I hate. Just so I can spam invites to randoms afterwards. I mean how -blam!-ing dumb is that. I want to play customs.. because I hate matchmaking. But, if I want to play customs... I have to play matchmaking, just to find the players to send invites too. HOW -blam!-ING DUMB IS THAT!??!?! As far as I'm concerned, Halo is for Bitches.. and the people in control of Halo currently are a bunch of -blam!-ing dumb bitches who have their heads so far up their ass, they don't realize that Halo is actually a -blam!-ing joke in the gaming world right now. Seriously, if you told me that you play Halo.... I'd laugh at you for being a loser. And anyone who continues to support that dumb -blam!-ing developer.. IF Halo 5 does not have something better... doesn't fully support Customs as the primary form of multiplayer.... You should not buy it. And if you do.... you're dumb. Because regardless of your opinion, or your favorability towards matchmaking. Matchmaking in reality is shit for the majority, and that is a fact. That is why Halo had to create a quit ban.... not because of the players. But because Matchmaking is -blam!-ing stupid. And instead of fixing the root of the problem. You blamed the players for taking the only course of action available to them to influence their time spent. I work. I come home. I don't want to play on dumb -blam!-ing maps. I don't want to play with dumb -blam!-ing players, who immediately start throwing grenades at their own team vehicles. I don't want to play with dumb -blam!-ing players who purposely try to get themselves betrayed. I don't want to play with dumb -blam!-ers who betray each other for power weapons. There are alot of reasons to quit from a Halo match. ALL OF THEM LEGIT! And the only reason to stay in a match...... Is because you want to pad your -blam!-ing K/D Ratio. -blam!- you and -blam!- Halo. And -blam!- 343.... and while were at it.. -blam!- Bungie too, since they originaly started this whole matchmaking bullshit. And just in case you missed it. I'm going to repeat it.. again. I want to play custom games. Because I do not like Matchmaking. None of my friends play Halo anymore. How am I supposed to play custom games? And tell me how to do it.. without tainting my friends list with people I could care less about?

          Not too many Easter eggs, the music was anything but reminiscent of the franchise, very lackluster multiplayer after-awhile. Oh! And one thing I absolutely loathe about Halo 4 is that they tried giving everything a UNSC branding in forge. Considering that on forge you are a Halo Monitor, that didn't really make any sense. Also, despite having sprint, sometimes things felt too clunky/Bulky, it's in little things like the design of the BR, the Scorpion, and the "thud" of assassinating someone. And sometimes Halo 4 felt [i]too realistic[/i], which if anything hurts a franchise like Halo. I think they nailed it for Halo 2 anniversary, but Halo 4 lacked with this whole militaristic vibe.

        • In my opinion, after growing up playing halo it just didn't feel like true halo to me, I personally didn't like the load outs and ordinance drops, we've seen what forerunner architecture looks like and its a little different in the previous games. Also the multiplayer had a lot of issues shared by a lot of people starting day 1.

Of all of the Halo games so far, or at least the numbered ones, it was the least like what I've come to think of as "Halo". I was always more used to all players starting with the same equipment, for instance, not customizable loadouts. Reach went there in a way, but everyone still had access to the same loadouts to pick from. I also was more used to having weapons placed on the map rather than ordinance drops to bring them in. For me, securing those spawn points was a major part of gameplay in older Halo games. Games on The Pit always started with that initial fight over the rocket launcher. On big maps, getting those vehicle spawns locked down was important. I missed that component of gameplay where, even in Slayer game types, there was some motivation to move around the map more. Then there were several more minor things that were a step [i]backward[/i]. Like you mentioned, there was no theater in certain modes. There was also no campaign scoring and medals. The stat tracking seemed way less in depth, at least at first. (Has this been improved?) While none of those little touches individually was game-breaking, it just felt odd to be rolling back what had been some pretty apparent progress across the trilogy. As you point out, it certainly wasn't [i]technically[/i] bad, with solid gameplay, good graphics, etc. It was just my opinion that Halo 4, especially the multiplayer component wasn't the kind of experience I expected based on Halo 1-3.

          • Spartans dont feel like spartans. They look very scrawny (especially female spartans.) Plus the gameplay with the lightings dont look "halo-like." The new abilities are cool, the making of classes are convenient, and the maps are classics but overall it doesnt have a feel to it like the old halos. When I speak about "old halo's" I'm referring to the creators that made it. When 343i took over, they nipped and tucked every aspect making it feel un-halo like. Just the sound effects make it sound unfamiliar. Oh and might I add the servers are horrible online and dont get me started on forge. It is too literally too over done. They wanted to advance settings in forge but made it more complicated than ever. So overall, the campaign felt shorter than other halo's, the multiplayer brought back good game types and old maps, and the new guns were fun to play around with. As a halo fan, I still managed to play Halo 4 despite the flaws I mentioned. I did enjoy it for a short period of time but Destiny is my go-to game for now.

          • I mean I like how 343 industries has add more content to Halo 5 without changing the franchise You gotta admit , one time we need to change something , because if they kept the same formula it would start to be boring.
