Needing Advice ...
First, let me say Destiny is the first real multiplayer, first-person shooter game I've played on my PS4. I've played COD, Halo and other older games on PC so I'm getting used to aiming/moving with a controller versus a mouse and keyboard. I love playing the crucible, its lots of fun ... but holy crap there are some great players out there. And that's my issue ... I find that I'm losing most head-to-head battles; meaning that I'm hitting my opponents 4-5 times vs. 1-2 shots to kill me.
Here's my setup:
Coiledhiss 1919 pulse rifle
Invective Shotgun
Deviant Gravity A machine gun
(Titan, Light 30, defence of 1509 ... currently upgrading my legendary Iron Regalia Plate chest armor I got with Iron Banner. My focus is inntellect but am well-rounded).
I'm okay with headshots but I find it really difficult to get kills using my primary. I mostly run around (sometimes kamikaze style) and kill guardians using my shotgun or pray for some heavy ammo and use my machine gun. I actually get over 50% of my crucible kills using a machine gun ... it's kinda my niche.
I need to update my primary and looking for tips. What do people recommend for someone with "okay" aim, and average gameplay? Any advice would be great.

Keep testing new guns out. And if you have a hard time getting headshots you might want to keep your eye out for weapons with really good stability. If you can somehow get the 3 little words pulse rifle with the counterbalance perk, I highly highly recommend it. It can beat out most exotics at mid-long range

Thanks for all the great tips. The not-so-easy answer is to find a Vex Mythoclast and all my troubles will be solved. I've been playing Destiny since December and have never done a raid. Guess I'm a bit of a lone wolf (or loser) ... def need to make new friends. haha I might give red death a try next time Xur has it. I think I need something similar to a pulse but that packs a bit more punch. I can't get used to fusion rifles, its useless in my hands. I might give a sniper rifle a try as my special ... truthful I get all excited and normally start spraying the air like an idoit when the center dot appears. Luckily with Invective as long as a hit 2/4 the guardian usually dies.

1. Consider going with a different exotic armor piece, and playing as a Striker Titan. Mine runs with The Armamentarium, since grenades are a big part of my play style. 2. Consider going with one of the better ARs. You trade a slightly longer time to kill in return for requiring less precision. 3. FLASH BANGS. These grenades temporarily blind your opponent and neutralize any of their advantages. They are deadly in tight spaces. Got one four kill streak by throwing one onto s control point that a fire team was clustered around. The grenade killed one outright. Before the others recovered , I'd shot one dead with my HC, and shotgunned two more.

I think the fact that you describe yourself as having "OK" aim is the main problem with your primary weapons. Primary kills rely on you either catching someone facing the wrong way, them already being damaged or being very accurate in terms of landing headshots. Try to get into the habit of keeping your reticle at head height. That will shave precious milliseconds off your reaction time, which in head to head battles makes a big difference. It is a bit weird trying to adjust to aiming with analog sticks when you are used to clicking with a mouse so any time you can reduce the amount of aim-adjusting you're doing with the sticks will help. Beyond that, you will probably find that even when you get better its still easier to get kills with shotties and HMGs. Which is why they are restricting both ammo types.

If you're playing Iron banner, you're going to be killed more easily due to the fact that Level matters and you're only level 30. Also Helm of Saint 14 is a Defender class Exotic item and you're using striker which totally negates St. 14's exotic perk. When using the helmet you want to try to bait the enemy into your bubble where they will be blinded and you'll have the upper hand on them. My buddy uses the same technique and with the invective you should have no problem raising your KD. Also equip send it on the invective and try sliding when running at enemies.

Your primary is not a great weapon for crucible. I strongly suggest timur's lash. It's for sale this iron banner and you'll do well with it once you get used to it.

Use defender with helm of saint 14. Invective anything that comes in the bubble. That was my first exotic and it's great with titans. The mag grenades are great too. If you can get a vex mythoclast it is a great pvp / pve weapon to upgrade your primary.

What's your preferred weapon? Three Little Words is a pretty good Pulse. Badger CCL is a good Scout. The Devil You Don't - Hand Cannon Vanguard - AR (Over with New Monarchy) Note: these are fairly easily attainable primaries. I didn't list exotics because you usually don't have a lot of say in acquiring them. If Invective is your only exotic, I'd definitely run with that.

red death or thorn (paired with felwinter's sniper) thats the meta in a nutshell for what ive seen

I'd say red death - the health regen would help u as well or the vex if u can get it :)
