Bonus Challenge Chests for the Vault of Glass

I recently read Kirk Hamilton’s interview with Luke Smith, the lead designer of the Vault of Glass. In the interview, there were comments that I felt potentially offered a few helpful insights into the hunt for more raid chests. ([url]http://tmi.kotaku.com/q-a-the-lead-designer-of-destinys-vault-of-glass-1647227058[/url]) My thoughts are not ground breaking or original, a lot has been said out there in the vastness of the internet, but I wanted to share to create more dialogue among my fellow like-minded Guardians. Like all of you, I enjoy a good puzzle. First, let's get an accurate chest count. I believe the current count is not correct because the spirit bloom chest is being included. Let's try to determine a criteria of what is and what is not a "VOG raid chest." [u]A CRITERIA FOR RAID CHESTS[/u] Luke Smith: “We actually got some custom support to make sure that, unlike other areas of the game, when you activate a chest, where they can go away or dissolve if you're in the activity, the raid chests will stay open and they won't dissolve. If you're running a little bit behind getting to one, it'll still be there.” So, if A equals B, and B equals C, then A equals C: A) All raid chests will not dissolve (fact). B) The spirit bloom chest will dissolve (fact). C) Therefore, the spirit bloom chest is not a raid chest. (Incidentally, I personally believe that the existence of the spirit bloom chest is to serve the game design function of providing an incentive “prompt” to re-explore the spirit bloom cave so that the “rabbit hole” that is revealed after the Templar’s defeat is eventually found.) [u]RAID CHEST COUNT[/u] So not counting the spirit bloom chest, there are currently four raid chests. Chest #1: Award after defending the three plates to open the vault’s front door. Found above the hidden entrance to alternative path to the Templar. Chest #2: Bonus Challenge not discovered. Bonus chest possibly found in alternative path #1. Chest #3: Award after defeating the Templar. Found at the cave located at the front of the Gorgon area. Chest #4: Award for bonus challenge if the Templar is defeated without teleporting. Found using alternative path #2 (“spirit bloom”). Chest #5: Award by evading the Gorgons gaze. Found in the Gorgon area to the right. Chest #6: Bonus Challenge not discovered. Bonus chest possibly found in alternative path #3. Chest #7: ? [u]SPECULATION[/u] How can I be specific about the number of chests and exactly which number is missing? I try to base my speculation on game design and philosophy so that I’m not completely pulling theories out of my ass. I don’t want to be wasting time chasing phantoms and figments of wild imagination. [u]THREE ALTERNATIVE PATHS: DESIGN AND FUNCTION[/u] There are three major stages in the Vault of Glass before Atheon. There is a “linear path” that runs through them that “naturally” draws players to the final Atheon stage. However, more importantly, there are three alternative paths to the “natural path.” [u]Stage #1 - Defend the Plates[/u] Natural Path #1: Through the cave entrance. Naturally leads to the discovery of Chest #1. Alternative Path #1: Through the entrance that is hidden in yellow mist beneath Chest #1. [u]Stage #2 - Defeat the Templar[/u] Natural Path #2: Through the gate behind the Templar. Naturally leads to the discovery of Chest #3. Alternative Path #2: Through the hole in the floor that opens up in the spirit bloom cave. Leads to hidden Chest #4. [u]Stage #3 - Evade the Gorgons[/u] Natural Path #3: Through the labyrinth to the first “disappearing columns” jump puzzle. Naturally leads to the discovery of Chest #5. Alternative Path #3: Through the cave to the left at the beginning of the first jump puzzle which leads to the second jump puzzle. So why have alternative paths? Certainly it’s fun to discover and explore something new. But, more importantly, alternative paths also provide a special area to place hidden chests like chest #4. But why hide the chests? Because they are conditional rewards. I personally believe the alternate path is the “true” path because it offers all the rewards. The natural path skips rewards. I've also observed the Vault behaves differently when going through the alternative paths. The center conflux immediately activates when passing through alt path #1 and the second jump puzzle activates when passing through alt path #3. [b]Not only are the alt paths the true path, but they also could become a conditional requirement for chest #6 or #7[/b] [u]BONUS CHALLENGE CHESTS[/u] Chest #2, #4, and #6 are what I consider bonus challenge chests. Chest #4 is a reward for preventing the Templar from teleporting. A task made more challenging with the release of four minotaurs each time a guardian occupies the Templar’s teleport ring of light. And chest #4 is located in alternative path #2. Both are rewards for those guardians who put more effort into the vault. This is consistent with game design and philosophy. So does the existence of alternative paths #1 and #3 prove the existence of chest #2 and #6? Maybe. For me, a compelling question would be, Why spend the money to develop areas if they only provide a second route to a known destination? Are they really simply for exploration and eye candy? My current opinion is chest #6 will be revealed at the portal near the front of Atheon’s door. Thus far, game design suggests that all chests, including the spirit bloom chest, can be simultaneously surrounded by all six raid members. The group experience is paramount to game philosophy (read Luke’s interview). Therefore, another criteria for a chest location is simultaneous access by all three guardian types. Another criteria is to be able to return to the path that leads to Atheon without dying. [u]BONUS CHALLENGES[/u] The Templar’s bonus challenge has been accomplished. So what are the remaining possible two bonus challenges? It’s been suggested that there are possible clues in the end screen menu that displays after everyone dies at each stage. Bungie needs to be able to track the successful completion of each bonus challenge and therefore needs to store those results in a database. However, this data may or may not be revealed publicly on screen. In the case of the Templar bonus challenge, the Templar does display the amount of teleports. Therefore, the simple algorithm would be, “If teleport equals zero, reveal bonus chest #2.” [u]Alternative Path #1[/u] So what data can be saved and checked for bonus challenge #1? I have not seen data supporting the (interesting and good) suggestion that no plates be taken over by a minotaur. There also has been reports of a melodic chime if this is successfully completed. I have yet to test these myself, but I’m sure it’s been done by now. And yet nothing has been found in alternative path #1 that I know of. Perhaps a hidden access opens up similar to the spirit bloom cave? [u]Alternative Path #3[/u] As far as the Gorgons, players have suggested and attempted various amounts of Gorgon killings. However, it may not be the amount killed, but rather the amount NOT killed. In the database, there is the number of gorgons killed (or not), number of times detected, and the time spent in the Gorgon area. [b]So a possible conditional trigger is, “If zero gorgons are killed, there are zero detections, and the time is below x amount, then reveal chest #6 at the portal.” [/b] [u]FINAL THOUGHTS - CHEST #7?[/u] The most oft cited reason for a seventh chest is Destiny's number motif of 5 and 7. There are five golden chests on each planet, there are seven oracles, etc. etc. However, it is possible to deviate from this motif because VOG has a dedicated design team. Although they may try to honor design consistency, they created a unique area in Destiny all of its own. Therefore, there could be six chests to symbolically represent the six raid Guardians. Or not. However, the strongest argument is that there is a scoreboard that suggests extra challenging tasks that could be rewarded with a chest after Atheon's death. Thanks for reading and sharing.   • Couple of thoughts: [b][u]1 - Gorgons[/u][/b] In mythology, only one Gorgon was killed. Numerous reports from players put the number of Gorgons in the maze at 8. If we follow the mythos, we would need to kill a single Gorgon (perhaps any Gorgon or perhaps a specific one), leaving the remaining number of Gorgons at Bungie's magic number - 7. Escaping unseen after that may trigger something elsewhere in the Vault. [b][u]2 - Templar and Atheon confluxes[/u][/b] There was a report a few nights ago that someone fired a round from a Vision of Confluence into a conflux and it sounded like a note on a keyboard. This leads me to believe that each raid weapon makes a different sound when fired at a conflux. There are 6 notes in the main hook of the Destiny theme and 6 players allowed in the raid. It's possible that finding the correct assortment of raid weapons (or the exotics of the "original 6") and then "singing" the theme at a conflux will unlock something - a la Halo 3 and the IWHBYD skull. I'd like to get a group together to try that last one on the central conflux in Atheon's room and also on the first Templar conflux after taking the alternate route to auto-spawn the conflux. [b][u]BONUS ROUND[/u][/b] Anyone else notice that the Templar oracles sound like they sing in the same key as the main Destiny theme?

      Awesome thoughts. Another reason to believe there are bonus chests: when you get all known chests in a raid run and hover over the Vault of Glass icon on the destination screen, the Rewards section still shows "Raid Set Gear" and "Ascendant Materials". When other missions like Nightfall and Weekly Heroic are completed, the Rewards section no longer appears. I think this is definitive proof that there are still undiscovered bonus chests. I agree that the death screens are probably showing hints for discovering the remaining chests.

        • A long time ago someone I think it was a Dev put up has anyone tried completing the entire raid all 6 members just using pulse rifles. Wonder if anyone has done that

          I personally subscribe to the [b]perfect scoreboard[/b] on each task theory. E.g. [b]no teleport[/b] yields an extra chest. This would mean we already know of the Gorgon bonus chest. (Head right through the Gorgon lair) if you get seen that door closes. So you have to have perfect score to access. This was easiest to find, as [b]Gorgon's gaze[/b] (scoreboard) wipes the team. One question that would help tie my theory together: [b] if you wipe on templar after a teleport, can you still achieve the no teleport chest?[/b] [quote]Yes, the Raid group I run with wiped a bunch of time trying to stop the Teleport legitimately and we still got the chest [/quote] So, aetheon would be completion without [b]times vengeance.[/b] [b]What are the other scoreboards?[/b] Does this theory warrant a repost once my other questions are answered?

            • Does anyone know can you go back and kill gorgons after you kill Atheon? Also about going through the gorgons maze without looking at gorgons has anyone just looked at the floor and followed the blue flames?

                • Hey jsting I sent you a friend request on psn if you need more exploration people, I currently have jumping game cp on hard... Anyways the point of this post is what if like everywhere else opening the main entrance to the vault is the natural direct path... And there is a second entrance into the vault... [spoiler]like maybe after opening the door properly and flawlessly instead of going inside you go to where the gate keeper was. I'm currently leveling a character to lvl 20 without turning any mission items in, Incase the eye of the gatekeeper or something is a key to an area of the vault. Let me know what you think, maybe I'm onto something?[/spoiler]

                  • I changed the title to this post to represent my new focus. The remaining chests are bonus challenge chests. To find them, we must find the bonus challenges that are connected to them. The key is the scoreboards. Here are some bonus challenges that I'd like to try to get a raid team together (or someone out there to do it) and see what happens. 1) Speed through the gorgon maze as quick as possible without being detected. Speculation: What if guardians cannot see gorgons as well as not being seen? This would be consistent with the Medusa gorgon who you cannot gaze upon. This would mean all the guardians would have to not even glimpse a gorgon (i've done it with a team, but not quickly). We looked at the ground and used the radar to keep together. We used the stream (maybe why it's there?) for part of the way and then used the wall on the back right as guides. On hard mode, this is even more difficult of course, so I would recommend trying this on normal mode because the bonus chest will still be rewarded on both modes. Again, not even glimpsing a gorgon is pure speculation. First try to get through the maze without being detected and then ALL team members must be standing on the warp gate using the disappearing columns in alt path #3. 2) Kill Atheon without time vengeance.

                    • About the Atheon encounter, the Mark of the Oracles could simply be cleansed by the shield-bearer right? That way everyone that got teleported could immediately get back to firing Atheon. That would also leave the oracle kills count at zero, as well as the time's vengeance count. The hard part would be evading the Supplicants. The super of the shield does huge damage on Atheon as well, and with some Gjallarhorns and dragon's breaths, he could go down quite quickly I reckon. Could anything be different when it's done this way? Maybe someone already did this, but if nobody has I'd like to do this with some 32's.

                      • In the VOG the spirit bloom chest has always confused me. It's not like the other chests. Why? What is the purpose of having a spirit bloom chest? It seems like a chest you could find just doing a patrol. Why would Devs put an ordinary chest in the VOG? It seems almost like conditioning to me. Everyone opens it and gets the simple rewards because they are use to doing it and don't regard it as special in some way. It is in the VOG why would it not be? Everything else is. My theories: 1) Maybe this chest is a trigger. Opening it could trigger other things to open temporarily in the vault. 2) Maybe you have to open this chest after you've done other things in order to get greater rewards. Im really curious about this let me know what you think. I understand your argument for it to be a sort of bait for guardians to find the second path. This may be the case but, the first alternative path doesn't have any sort of bait and neither does the alternative jumping maze path. The jumping maze alt. is much easier to find though without a doubt. I still don't think the spirit bloom chest being a bait or reward really makes sense or justifies its existence.

                      • OP, have you ever theorized in the VoG with The Stranger's Rifle, Pocket Infinity, and the Vex Mythoclast? All descriptions seemed tied somehow, and I believe a secret door opens in the Gorgon chest room. Somehow.

                        • I have my oun theory for atheon bein referance for athena, the mythological synod match entirely (gorgonian pandent, aegis and the resemblance in the name), after giving it some time and taught i ran to the conclusion that we the guardien might take the role of heremes, which also fits some lore, do notice that heremese is athena's brother and also he could move freely between the world of man and good. I dont knkw if any of these mean anything but i belive it could reveal sone info on how to unlock the rewards. Me and my team also noticed the red lights in the vog and have a theory of why there are more rewards to be found. The most critical one is that when u pick the raid from the dearinations menu there are still rewards to be earned even after claiming the templar chest or beating it on hard, also the end timer and the lack of being returned to orbit is there dor a reason, otherwise it would have been patched already. We also found that the green portal's plate inside of the red dimension in the atheon part, looks wired, it has some lights marking it and it looks as if it was half way active, the same doesnt apply to the red portal inside green, we also notices the re portal is the only one that opening directly after defeating atheon. Hope this shed new light and ideas to the whole theory thing. I realy want to know what u guys think of this.

                            Actually the templar teleporting does not immedietly despawn the "NO teleports" chest after him. The chest is on a timer that activates after his first teleport. I had it dissapear right before my eyes today. Is it possible the other game mechanics work that way with the sync plates not being taken ovrr and then a timer being activated tk race to a chest location. And i really liked your theory with the gorgons formula could really be on to something

                            • I feel like one of the biggest curiosities is the warp gate at the end of the jump puzzle right before you go into aetheon's room. There is a stress on the usage of warp gates immediately after see this, not too mention it can still be accessed for a while as the door back to the jump puzzle does not close for a while. I feel there is something to be done with the Mars and Venus portals that will activate this third mystery one. Just a theory

                                • in the beginning of VOG where the team first spawns if you turn around and look to the pillar behind you on the left did anyone notice its smooth surface and it seems to resemble a pad like where you stand for the spire phase?

                                  • 1. The center conflux is NOT immediately activated if you take the alternative path. It behaves the same way as if you take the normal route. 2. I don't think that the 6th chest spawns at the gate because it you manage to get to the gate you cannot simply go further to fight atheon. I believe that the 6th chest spawns in the little cave at the second jump puzzle. You take the left cave, jump down to the little cave, loot the chest and jump to atheon over the puzzle. Also, if you are in front of atheons room you cannot simply go back to the portal.

                                    • In Greek mythology perseus killed medusa (the only mortal gorgon) and immediately fled her lair to avoid Medusa's sister (A.K.A. the gorgon sisters) so maybe if you don't get detected, kill one gorgon and flee the labrynth in a certain time, you spawn a 6th chest. Anyone interested in testing this message me on xbox 1 Gt is Gohrgat

                                          • I havent been able to string together how its done but after the gorgons look to the left of the jumping puzzle entrance. There will be a ledge, jump on it and above that is the cave, walk all the way through it. Now at the end of the tunnel , look down. There is a landing area right below the tunnel. Not the floating blocks. Land on the landing area and right inside the wall is a cave with what looks like a polished spot for a chest. Any thoughts? I play on 360 add me if youd like to raid/explore gt Prints is PLUR

                                            • This is very well thought out and the reasoning is sound. To try on hard mode raid: Don't let sync plates be taken, get melody to say complete, bonus chest in hidden route, possibly hidden passage, No teleports from Templar, bonus chest already found in second hidden route. Avoid gorgons gaze, kill no gorgons, complete area in under specified time - quick as possible. Take third hidden route to second jumping puZzle where 3rd bonus chest is found, possible by vex gate. Complete gAtekeeper / Athlon as normal. I think as you say this the 'true path' of the vault and only by completing all of these tasks will the vault be cracked. It would seem to me that as you say the spirit bloom chest is not a raid chest so that makes six in total - one for each of the team who complete it. There may be a caveat to not die or more likely not wipe. I think the designers want to reward the team for discovering the true nature of the vault. Anyone actually done this yet?? Post a vid if you have.
