So I came home today to find my ps4 stolen out of my house with nothing else missing. Looks like I won't be there with you on 9/9 gaurdians. Worst surprise ever. Does anyone know if there's something I can do? I'm in the midst of filing a police report and i have to imagine theres some way to track the ip adress when it's connected to the Internet.
Oh and they also took the box so I have no idea what the serial number was and that's always a plus. I have it set as my home system and all but there's no other way to retrieve the serial # as far I know.
... Help?
Edit: weirdest thing for me is they didn't take anything else but a couple 360 controllers I had. None of my roommates valuables have been taken from 360's and guitars to expensive jewelry.
Edit 2: garage door had been broken for about a week and roommates have been using it as an entrance instead of real doors apparently. So someone may have seen and slipped in. It may also be likely that the roommate moving out may have told a friend or two about it. I'll be contacting Sony of course in the morning.
I appreciate all the responses and advice. Will be looking into renter's insurance and custom markings in the future.
Edit 3: I don't give a shit if you guys believe me or not all I was hoping to learn was if there is another way to get my serial number with having both box and system stolen. Thanks.
Edit 4: managed to get the serial number from best buy. Thanks to everyone for support, advice, tips. Hopefully I can get it back but I'm doubtful at this point. Anyways, thanks again everyone.

This look like an inside job. The thieve knew exactly what he was looking for and where to get it, I think the thieve can be a friend of your roommate in coop with one of your roommates. I can say this because in college I have heard lots of similar stories, and the common factor in all of them are friends of your roommates that are strangers for you.

its an inside job. the only thieves that steal something specific (without taking anything else) tend to be inside jobs. who else would know you had 2 xbone controllers and a ps4? it's either a "friend" (I use the term loosely) or as you stated, someone that knew one of your roomates. be sure to delete your info (from the website)

Bearbeitet von ChadPook: 8/30/2014 12:18:55 PMDoubt you still know the Mac address for your ps4. Maybe SOE can track where it is. The police are extremely slow with technology evidence/leads.

2 AntwortenSomeone broke into my house too, they took my PS4 but not my Xbox one... I put the Xbox One on my front porch to try and catch the thief but nobody will go near it. The mail man started putting my mail on the curb. :(

1 AntwortenThe same thing happened to my mate but it was the ps3 that was stolen but his xbox one was not moved with is odd

2 AntwortenDid they take the PS4 controller? If they didn't that would be a serious case of iron E. But I do fell for u bro :( hope u manage to retrieve your console :)

20$ it was your roommate xD

From a fellow Justin I wish you luck with your endeavor. It's an unforgivable sin to steal someone's gaming console. It's like a commandment or something, "thou shalt not steal thy brothers gaming console, lest ye be a douche bag".

1 AntwortenHave you tried calling your home insurance. They would be able to help you with your problem. This year my family had a problem. We had a lightning storm in Australia in nsw. A lightning struck the antena that pretty much destroyed all tv's except mine. The internet and my brothers new ps4 which he only had for 4 weeks and my dads ps3 got destroyed. True story. What my dad did was he called insurance which they were helpful to replace any damages we had. We got ps4 replaced, the wifi modem replaced. But my dad didn't want the ps3 anymore so the left over money that was suppose to be to replace ps3 got used on my parents personal use. I got nothing but to sell every ps3 game I bought with my own money. Anyway the point is I hope this will help your situation calling your insurance if you have one.

1 AntwortenSounds like a planned theft, people who knew the house and what they were looking for. Do you trust your roommates?

That sucks i hope you get it back

The darkness is coming...

7 AntwortenBearbeitet von Titan Commandant: 8/29/2014 9:48:44 PM1) Check pawn shops...though it sounds like a pretty targeted item. Possibly simply meant for personal use not selling. 2) If you had a credit card on it...get that nixed instantly. Get the Serial number to the cops, it'll help but at this point I doubt you'll see recovery man...really sorry. Had it happen to a friend of mine, nearly identical stories.

I lost 3 ps3s this way. Not much you can do. Sometimes gamestop will have the serial on a receipt but with pout a court order you can track it with your isp

20 AntwortenMakes me worry about bringing my Xbox One to my dorm... any suggestions on making sure it doesn't get in someone else's hands?

2 AntwortenWow shit dude I'm sorry to hear that. I hope you get it back! Can best but help you do anything about it?
-
1 AntwortenShould have had an xbox. No one would have stolen that! AMIRITE
-
Sounds like somebody knew what was in your house and only wanted the PS4
-
17 AntwortenI don't believe you. If someone broke in and was to steal stuff they wouldn't take just a Playstation and some xbox controllers.
-
If you can't get it back at least Sony can shutdown the console

9 AntwortenI feel for ya bud. I f..kin hate thieves! Worst kind of human beings. Hope you catch them and have them locked up. They could do up to 5yrs. It's value is over 300 so it's a Felony Class D. It was most likely some one you know or your roommates know. Again sorry for your loss. You could just go buy a cheap PS3 to hold you over.

good luck man... we'll be waiting for you when you arrive...

1 AntwortenBearbeitet von cucuchu: 8/29/2014 5:13:29 PMDo you know the MAC address of your ps4? This will be unique to your ps4 where as the IP is simply assigned to the ps4 by the ISP when it is connected to the internet (or set manually if its in the correct IP subnet of the network and IP is available). I don't believe they can track the serial number as its not passed in the networking packets but the IP address and MAC address would. Specifically the MAC address in your case would be important. This goes out as a lesson to everyone. Know all your devices' MAC addresses in case of theft !
