Time Travel Ability

With time travel being included in the game so far only with the Vex, I'm wondering if it will end up playing as some form of ability. I can imagine it being an ability only for a Warlock to where if the Warlock went down in battle, he/she could activate this ability and it would turn back the clock a few seconds to allow the player to make an alternate move to save his or her life. What do you think about it?

  • Ok, I kinda of agree that as an ability this might be hard to implement, but maybe not as a power. Dig this. What if Warlocks can harness the power of time travel not to move from moment to moment, but maybe longer hops into the future or past. So, let's say what if you needed to go back to a specific area of a Old Chicago, let's say maybe a month prior to your current time, and the only way to get there was to have a Warlock in your fire team! Here's to rampant ideas based on scarce info!!!

    • Time travel would definitely work in a shooter, as long as it had a fairly massive drawback. Consider the shooters like Max Payne and F.E.A.R. - both had a time depression element. A sufficiently large drawback would be a time-elongation following use of the ability. Essentially for 2 or 3 seconds of accelerated movement/firing - the player would then experience an equal period of the world (therefore enemy guardians or races) moving faster than they are. It would be a powerful ability for small firefights, but potentially a major Achilles' heel in longer engagements, if not carefully utilized.

    • I think: How do you program that into a living open world or a multiplayer/coop setting? How are other players supposed to experience it? Time manipulation abilities work best in single-player formats due to the player being the only free agent in the system, but that changes if you have other people around. Use the ability to suddenly turn back time and you could get a bunch of people completely confused as to why they are where they were 5 seconds ago, then angry about the constant break in their fighting grooves. Such a dynamic is hard to moderate for multiple people to the point where it can be fun rather than confusing and bewildering.

      • I think in practice it would end up as a very clunky and confusing abillity that does not telegraph itself well. Not to mention, I'm not a fan of abillities that allow you to retroactively correct your mistakes. Armor Lock's Plasma Grenade Shedding component is a good example of that, it allows players to ignore mistakes and play reactively instead of actively, it's not good for game flow and it's not good for player development.

        • Not going to happen. Especially as a shared world shooter. Whether public space or not, this mechanic would kill the gameplay. While time travel may play a part in the story of the Vex, I only find that time travel itself will play a minor role within the overall story arc of Destiny. This is not to imply that the possibility of it playing a larger role in Destiny 2 or 3 isn't possible. I'm just saying in Destiny itself, no. It's not happening.
