In a recent Destiny article in EDGE Magazine*, there was mention of a feature many people have been asking about; a crafting system:
Bungie won't be drawn further on Destiny's crafting system, except to say that staff have "very intentionally" shown off Destiny's weapons and gear from a "high altitude". Bungie's PR adds that they didn't tab over to the inventory screen in their E3 gameplay demo, where "you might find evidence of those sorts of systems - not that we're confirming anything, of course."
While this quote doesn't quite confirm a crafting system in Destiny, it sure does heavily imply that there will be one.
Now, as Zelda brought up in another thread, it doesn't really make sense that there would be a crafting system, when we already saw at E3 that the functionality of a weapon will be established via skill tree. In addition, Urk (Eric Osborne) later confirmed in an interview with MMORPG.com that every piece of gear in the game also has these kinds of skill trees. So that leaves two questions: “Why would there be a crafting system?” and “How would it work?” Let’s address those two questions, shall we?
Why would there be a crafting system?
Bungie has been promoting plenty of things with Destiny, but if there’s one thing they’re promoting above all else, it’s the idea that any player can become legend. But, you can’t be a legendary guardian without legendary gear to match. We know from the GDC panel that Bungie developed all the weapons in the game modularly. What this does is present an opportunity for players to take these modules, and put them together to create a weapon unique to their character. We don’t know if armor was also designed in a modular fashion, but it’s safe to assume so.
How would it work?
As previously stated, we know that the function of every piece of gear is determined by a skill-tree. So, the crafting system wouldn't have any effect on how the weapon/armor functions. Rather, it would be an entirely cosmetic process. As players explore the world of Destiny, they’ll amass a large collection of weapons and armor. These weapons and armors can be broken down into their key components (Receiver, Barrel, Stock, etc…) and be re-crafted into new weapons. Players can create a weapon with a completely unique look, feel and name. Compound this with the skill-trees (which would be determined by the Receiver), every weapon you craft would be truly unique.
What do you think?
Do you think this idea is plausible, or perhaps even likely? Personally, I think a system like the one I proposed would work incredibly well in Destiny, and it provides Bungie with a very good method of reinforcing the idea of really becoming legend. Feel free to post your feedback below.
*Unfortunately, you need to be subscribed to EDGE magazine to read the article, so I can't link it. If I can find another official source, I'll update the thread.

1 AntwortenI don't think it'll be that complex (I like the thought, though, you laid it out nicely). The weapons might be able to to be broken down, but into base elements instead of base parts. While the demo showed that upgrading the tree required glimmer and a talent, perhaps they didn't reveal other forms of crafting items, such as metals and crystals beyond glimmer.
Do you think this idea is plausible, or perhaps even likely?
Yes. Now imagine if your could brand your weapon with your Gamertag and sell them on the market! Imagine if you could make a living crafting weapons from pieces only you know where to obtain! Imagine if your "brand" or specific weapon became trendy! Weapon subculture would be pretty unique, but I doubt they'll go as far as I have just suggested...
