The point of sunsetting items is to phase out potent and problematic weapons or perks so that players will try new things.

That’s the problem though people do try their new things but they’re just boring so they go back to guns they have fun with

Problems is that there are perks that dominate the meta. There are certain weapons that if you don't get kill clip or rampage on it, you delete it. Instead of further nerfing these perks, the weapons will gradually be sunset to allow for fresh, new perks to be experimented with. You'll still be able to use all your favourite weapons in casual crucible, weekly strikes and patrols, they just won't have a place high-end activities. All MMO's do this over time to keep the game dynamic. We all have an attachment to our favourite weapons, but sometimes you have to let go.

That’s why they need to make the other perks more attractive and not be useless. It’s the same things with underused exit it’s being the reason they keep nerfing favorite ones. Shitty perks are shitty perks no matter how you look at them and that’s the reason people only go for a select few because they actually make a difference in gameplay. If they don’t make the other perks relevant it does not matter if they sunset weapons because even in the new ones people are gonna only look for kill clip rampage. So it all comes back around. Personally knowing bungies track record the only way they’re doing this is so they “reintroduce” them again down the road and they don’t have to come up with new guns. That’s the majority of D2 RESKIN things from D1

That’s just a pipe dream. Not trying to troll, but the reality is, without getting super niche or wacky to the point of broken or useless, there are only so many traits you can augment in a game like this. Those have all been addressed. Think of all the most recently introduced perks. All are “meh” tier (vorpal isn’t “meh” but it’s that niche that isn’t useful often enough to most are people to rock it mostly). You can get lucky every once in a while, but as was said, people always come back to outlaw/kill clip/whatever. Only way you get people to abandon what they already love is to hit harder, reload faster, or aim better than the current perks which just ends up getting stupid. On paper the “make more interesting perks” ends up with either the recluse or “lead into gold.” The game doesn’t benefit from either one. Sun setting kinda makes you start over which is bit of a downer, but makes the grind (and playing in general) purposeful again which is far more important to the game. Sun-setting doesn’t waste your time. The current state of things with all the old standby weapons is actual what’s wasting your time and disrespecting your time investment.

That's where power creep comes in. People choose rampage and kill clip because they increase damage. The only way you sideline perks like those are by introducing perks that do more damage and more damage and more damage. Power creep comes in, and then eventually everything is nerfed into oblivion. The game ultimately need to pull away from damage-dealing perks, but there are three options of dealing with the current main offenders to do so: 1 - nerf the perks into oblivion 2 - sunset the weapons 3 - remove the perks / weapons from the game

Fact of the matter is you can introduce new and unique perks like osmosis or elemental capacitor, which are amazing, but the average player then hits the loop, "Does this help me kill quicker? Yes - keep it, No - shard it."
