Truth Serum: 4K 60fps

OK folks after the unveiling of the Xbox One X and all the cries of "why no 60fps" and the rubbish claims of Bungie holding back performance or crippling the Xbox One X. I'm here to show you kiddies why that isn't the case and why 4K 60fps native just isn't happening on all games this console generation. Now for starters lets get the facts straight. Both the PS4 Pro and Xbox One X use AMD hardware in them that is nearly identical. Both use "custom" 8 core AMD Jaguar based CPUs and both use an integrated AMD Polaris based GPU. The differences are subtle between them but are there. The main differences being a 200Mhz clock frequency advantage on the One X CPU and the Polaris GPU features 2560 shader cores running at 1172Mhz. It also has 12GB DDR5 memory (9GB useable) but that really isn't as much of an advantage as it seems. Xbox One X: AMD Jaguar based CPU @ 2.3Ghz AMD Polaris based GPU 2560 shaders running at 1172Mhz 12GB 256bit GDDR5 max bandwidth of 326GB/s PS4 Pro: AMD Jaguar based CPU @ 2.1Ghz AMD Polaris based GPU 2304 shaders running at 911Mhz 8GB 256bit GDDR5 max bandwidth of 218GB/s Now these are the main things to be concerned with when it comes to evaluating performance. As we can see the Xbox One X has several advantages over the PS4 Pro, higher CPU clock, more GPU cores running faster and more memory bandwidth. Now that all sounds great until you realize that both consoles are using a woefully underpowered CPU to push the GPU. The AMD Jaguar based APUs in both consoles is miles behind even modest budget CPUs for desktops when it comes to IPC (Instructions Per Clock). Now take into account the fact that both GPUs are using a known quantity in the GPU department in Polaris and we start making relative comparisons. Lets start with the GPU. The GPU in both consoles is a Polaris based AMD hardware. These are not new in the PC market and in fact there are several video cards currently available that use them and several enthusiast PC websites have reviewed them. The card that most closely resembles the GPU in both of them is the Radeon RX580. This GPU features the same Polaris architecture with 2304 shader processors, 32 ROPs and uses a 256bit memory bus. Now you may be saying "it has less shaders than Xbox One X". Yes that is true but the PC video card is clocked higher at 1340Mhz, vs 1172Mhz in the Xbox One X. This has the Radeon RX580 delivering 6.1 Teraflops of compute performance which is higher than the XBox One X rated 6 Teraflops. The PS4 Pro on the other hand uses the same 2304 shader processors as the RX580 but it is only running them at 911Mhz delivering 4.2 Teraflops of compute performance. This puts the PS4 Pro's GPU in the same performance category as a RX470 (which is benchmarked alongside the RX580 in the review posted below) Now what do all these numbers mean? I went through explaining this so you would understand the review I'm going to post now: http://www.guru3d.com/articles-pages/powercolor-radeon-rx-580-red-devil-review,1.html This shows the Radeon RX580 which is faster than both console GPUs using a massively more powerful CPU in the Intel I7 5960X overclocked to 4.3Ghz. And what do we see in 4K? The results speak for themselves. The GPU just isn't powerful enough for 4K 60 even when being pushed by a CPU that is orders of magnitude faster than the one in the consoles. That is why consoles use tricks like dynamic resolution scaling and checkerboarding....ect to achieve a "4K like" experience. Now sure, there are some games that can run 4K 60fps on both consoles but they are using much lower graphic quality settings. Here is a look at the upcoming Assassins Creed game running on Xbox One X https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e8oPvbpVGP0&t=239s Even here they are using tricks like the previously mentioned "dynamic resolution scaling" and "checkerboarding" to get to 4K. Is this bad? No not at all in fact it can look quite good when pulled off correctly and often requires you to really examine the image to tell the difference. Most people don't do this nor do they care. As long as it looks and plays good that's all that matters.
