Preface: I'm not the guy that sat behind his computer hoping the Update would be a flop. There are those people. I'm the guy who got excited about each live stream and thought about all the cool things I would get to do. So don't tell me about how I'm looking for flaws and trying to make the game look bad.
So let's talk about what's good.
Pros:
Crucible Changes. I dropped 42 kills in my first game of crucible since the update, I only saw a couple snipers and it felt great.
Good looking armor. The armor looks awesome in this update, and chroma is a neat way for customization, I look forward to collecting the spektar new monarchy gear and making my Titan Red, White, and Blue.
New leveling system. The infusion system is great now, and the exotic engrams giving upgrades are nice as well.
Now for what's bad.
Cons:
Sterling Treasure. These packages disgust me. We are limited to earning three packages each week, and we rely on RNG to give us what we want. Bungie is almost forcing players to purchase Sterling treasure to earn the gear they want. Don't believe me? There are two full sets of armor for each class, so there are 24 different armor pieces that you could get from a package. If you wanted the taken armor, you would probably take 8 weeks to get the full set. I watched EnragedCinema (Prodigy) open 27 packages and not get the full set of armor. That's 9 weeks for the free player.
Prison of Elders. Not many people like prison of elders, and this is just a reskin with a scorecard. Doing the new PoE quickly reminded me of how much I hate it.
Nothing actually "new". There are a handful of new weapons, but the majority of content labeled as "new" is just reskinned weapons or Y1 weapons most players already have.
Conclusion. I'm dissapointed in this update, it feels like a cash grab. I understand Bungie needs to make money, but just sell this update for 10$ instead of hiding the cool armor behind Eververse. I'm annoyed that the community asked for a Taken Shader and instead were given Taken armor in the form of micro transactions.
Edit: Most people here don't understand the concept of a cash grab. Here is a definition: "When movie studios produce unnecessary and often poor quality sequels in order to obtain more money."
Obviously Destiny isn't a movie, but the same concept is here. This update is poor quality, and done with the intent to make money from Sterling treasure.
Better explanation
Okay. Here we go. In Year 1 Bungie used a money making model of pre-advertised DLC (TDB & HoW). They set what was going to be included and set a price based upon what it will cost to produce plus a profit needed. They then set the prices accordingly. In Year 2 however they have moved onto the Eververse system with micro transactions.
Why is this meaningful? In Year 2 Bungie has not advertised their updates like they did in Year 1. They were as vague as possible about it, saying "New things to do and earn." This allowed them to not make as much content but still make more money, since were not bound to anything.
*Cue Tess Everis*
Now Eververse is in the picture. The job of Eververse is to make money. Bungie has undoubtedly done psychological assessments to see what players will buy. Why do you think they have included Emotes from Classic movies or TV shows? Because they know they charge more and people will still buy those. Napoleon Dynamite is a classic movie. Of course people want that dance.
Sterling Treasure is the same way. The community asked for a Taken Shader and Bungie could have done that but instead make it into an armor set that you almost have to purchase from Tess. They knew people would purchase it and so they made the armor harder to get from the Sterling Treasure.
This update is poor quality. But I would guarantee that they have a much larger profit margin on this update than any other DLC they have released. That's a cash grab.
Go read PhantomEm's comment before you comment anything about the update being free.
