Depends, some people get rather good training through the military and become assets to the job market. Former military are preferred for certain jobs, i remember amazon had military service as a preference for an operations manager position in conjunction with a masters degree (6 figure job). To your point someone who leaves as a lowly private doesn't provide much.

They can get that kind of experience in the workforce. What actual value does a deployed soldier add to our economy?

You deal with superiors like you would in any job, but there's a lot more guidelines you're obligated to follow. A company isn't going to mentally and physically break you down and build you back up to their standards either. One way you could look at it is that deployment of troops results in demand for workers to manufacture the needed equipment. Granted some things are automated, but there is still a need for human labor. As horrible as it sounds war creates jobs, military and civilian.
A company isn't going to mentally and physically break you down and build you back up to their standards either.
100% the reason the military is more -blam!-ed up than any company.

Matter of perspective, someone could say enron just as horrible because they made employees comform to their practices that led to the financial ruin of people.
