The Taken King requires both TDB and HoW to play, each of which costs $20 per, on top of Destiny itself being $60. The Taken King alone is $40, but also gives you an emblem, sparrow, and shader.
New players (mainly) will now have the option to buy both the expansions, Destiny, and The Taken King for $80 altogether on one disc. The other option grants as listed above, but is a digital download that also grants 3 different, new subclass themed shaders, three class specific emotes, and three exotic class items (one fore each class, again themed for the new subclasses), each of which grants an experience gain bonus (The percent is currently unknown).
In short....
Day One Players, dedicated to the game- $140, Destiny +All DLC+A shader+A sparrow
New Players with no or little experience- $60, Destiny +All DLC on one disc
OR
New/Vanilla/TDB/HoW Players (People who played Destiny for a small amount of time)- $80, Destiny+All DLC+3 Shaders+3 extra XP Class Items, all digital downloads.
I feel like day one players got really *beep* over here. New players weren't there to support the game and help point out its problems or exploit loot caves, or complain about the rarity of ascendant shards and the fact that they were rare-quality and not legendary. Even so, new players can get more in the game for significantly less money than us day one players. Not only that, but Bungie is making it even easier for new players to gain more progress than older players, and quicker, with every DLC, and this is no exception. Anyway, rant over.
Edit- Yes, GOTY Editions and such have existed for a long time. A LONG time. Prices drop as time goes on. We all understand that, so stop commenting about it. It is the fact that new players have to put in significantly less effort in the game to progress than older players, and that they are actually given better tools to do this. Also, the majority of GOTY Edition Games don't have nearly the same type of progression as Destiny. Many GOTY Edition games, like Borderlands 2 and Pre-Sequel, for example, are Single Player or Co-op with entirely different Genres. No matter how much people, including Bungie, hate to admit it, Destiny is an MMO FPS at heart, in which progression and the speed of progression matter significantly. This is why so much of this is a big deal-It completely revolves around Bungie's sales pitch and how they deal with their game. Poorly.

Edit 2-Since a large amount of people on these forums apparently have troubles reading a reasonably small to moderate amount of text, the previous and most important paragraph has been bolded.
It just hit me that both the collector edition purchases grant new players the 3 shaders and class items, but because it gives them both TDB and HoW DLCs, they will also have access to the founder's pack. In other words, there is absolutely nothing special for people who already owned the game in general. Proof of this is directly on the pre-order page.
"Play It Now - Pre-purchase the digital Collector’s Edition and immediately begin playing Destiny and both Expansions today!"

This all leads to a more pressing matter that effects anyone who put any money into dlc for this game. This topic is getting crowded, so the new topic with facts and explanations can be found here: https://www.bungie.net/en/Forum/Post/130708018/0/0
