Well those who are getting extras are going to make a ton on ebay but not really worried they will probably release more ghost editions for the holidays so expect it to get even crazier around black friday.
Now when they say "Cancelled", do they mean that everyone who ordered one no longer gets one or their just going to stop distributing them? Honestly why can't they just say, "Ghost edition all sold out."
Well...
First things first, as usual the "Gaming News Networks" that be, IGN being a prime example of the low standard in the business, can't get it right in their details. - The Limited Edition of Destiny are in large supply and are not bound to run out any faster than the standard edition. The differences are minor, maps/starcharts and metal boxes are cheaply and easy to aquire and put into circulation by Bungie, and the in-game items (emblems etc) are simply a code for them (Bungie) to create and release. So no, IGN, the Limited Edition of Destiny are NOT running out.
The GHOST edition though, are AFAIK, sold-out at but all vendors (atleast here in Sweden, the Scandinavian gross-supplier has filled its quote and can not obtain more at least). Of course there may be some places which still has them, but I would not bet on it. If IGN and similar "News Networks" which attempts to centralize themselves on the Gaming sections actually tried to offer facts instead of tabloid-like "news", I'd be oh so happy.
Secondly, it's a well-known fact by anyone who have been looking at pre-orderings of the last 2 or 3 years that many retailers will take in Pre-Orders from their customers en mass. They then send out an apology and remove the Pre-Order, sometimes even without an apology (SW The Old Republic's Collectors Edition and Amazon comes to mind for example).
So while it does seriously suck, for those gamers, geeks, nerds or fans (take your pick in how you feel it pertains to you) who have pre-ordered these things, to lose out simply because the Retailer attempts to mark up their Hype-Sales in normal fashion it shouldn't come to anyone as a massive shock.
Sorry but this does happend. If the customers with their irritation, anger or which ever emotion they have, would angle that in a constructive way towards said Retailers and actually manage to make them change their ways (Blissful wish I know), we may actually see a change.
The retailer which I work alongside have taken this type of flak and complaints to us and have listed the specific numbers of these ultra-special cases that we actually get, onto our physical stores and online. Once a member then pre-orders it, a number is quickly counted down. Once the quota is filled, we remove the item from the store and put into function an automatic message system (mail for online orders, phone or text for in-store or phone pre-orders) that informs those people who ordered the item from a pre-loaded site or in-store/phone at the, sadly, too late time.
While this does offer some issues and complaints, it is at least directly informed so that they can attempt to scour other stores for the item in question.
But back to the OP, sorry for derailing it abit Reapper89...
I think it's sad that the Retailers in some places (The US quite often it's noted) tries to fluctuate their own numbers to at a later date force their customers to change their orders or entierly deny it, followed by hiding behind a Terms of X/Y/Z which all stores have.
I also think it's sad that oh so many players, or atleast would-be players, feel offended and surprised by the Retailers for these things. It's a very common practice, sadly, and something one has to learn to either accept or create a pull to have it changed.
@A Drunk3n Duck: Well it appears BestBuy, in this case, means that the Ghost Edition of Destiny, are sold out on -all- systems, but if they (customer) wishes to buy the Limited Edition or Standard Edition, they (BestBuy) will be happy to change their order for the customer, at a discount price, in an offer of apology. I haven't checked, so don't quote me on this, but I would believe that BestBuy in this case, have removed their Ghost Editions from their Online Booking/Pre-Order site or noted in big red letters "SOLD OUT! SORRY!". - That atleast would be what we do.
I believe that the few Ghost Editions that they get their hands on (BestBuy) for various consoles, will still be sold - but they will be distributed in the order of which Pre-Order got in first (all Pre-Orders are timestamped when placed)... Minus the one or two that the CEO or Logistic Manager wants for his/her own kid(s).
As a note before anyone jumps down my throat about that last part - I relinquished my Ghost Edition (which I pre-ordered before it was put up on the site) in favor to a Customer.
