Destiny 2, the love is lost... thanks to Lightfall's difficulty increase

I have played Destiny 2 since the week it came out in September of 2017. I have 3,870+ invested game hours. I consider myself a veteran player due to the length of time I have played, but an average player based on my personal skill. Due to personal social limitations (Aspergers), I predominantly play solo and avoid team-oriented dungeons and raids; which in turn, but I accept, prevents my access to top-tier raid and dungeon weapons and gear. In the summer of 2019, I had multiple strokes that turned the right side of my brain into swiss cheese, so I will NEVER be as proficient with Destiny 2 as the sweaty professional players that can steamroll through Trials of Osiris, Legendary / Master Lost Sectors, and Master Nightfalls like their nothing. I use to try them but now avoid them because after experiencing death, after death after death, and the frustration it brought with no forward movement; realizing it was insanity, expecting different results than complete failure or time running out. Prior to Legendary / Master Lost Sectors new exotic gear (not already obtained) used to be acquired in random drops. Ever since November 2020 when Destiny 2 introduced the Legendary / Master Lost Sectors and requiring multiple completions for the possibility but slim chance of obtaining a new exotic gear drop (not already obtained), I have missed out on all new exotic gear from Beyond Light, Witch Queen, and now Lightfall. That first started the feeling that Destiny 2 was alienating me based on my average gaming ability. Now with Lightfall more aspects of the game are even more unattainable for me: //NODE.OVRD/AVALON// Exotic Mission, Partition Access needed for the BlueJay Quest, which sets the difficulty "15 points over the player's current power" (!) and even some parts of the Neomuna map like Terminal Overload where Threshers can 1-shot kill and I'm sure other activities I have not encountered yet. Except when I was in the hospital or had Covid, I used to log in to Destiny 2 every week if not several times a week, do my daily bounties, run the current seasons' story missions, and participate in seasonal events on all 3 of my characters; far beyond what a casual player does. Now playing Destiny 2 feels like a chore. No longer "fun" getting my -blam!- handed to me over and over, death after death, and ramming home the fact that I can't cut it as an average Destiny 2 player anymore with the current game-wide difficulty level set in Lightfall. Last week, the 3rd week into Lightfall I didn't bother login in to play Destiny 2. Instead, I found myself reinstalling Fallout New Vegas and playing that instead. Destiny 2 made me realize I was out of my league paying it in its current iteration; the love for it is lost. Destiny 2 is just not fun anymore. I am not in the top 10% of Destiny 2 players nor do I have a voice that is remotely as loud as Destiny 2 streaming gaming personalities or professional Destiny 2 players, I am no one in the eyes of the devs that feel that their special or privileged players' opinion matters more than all the other "average" players. I know most people probably stopped reading this after the first paragraph... out of all the things I have to say here, the most relevant is: Destiny 2, you are alienating your loyal, long-time disabled, and average players. Thank you for your time. Em aka NemeisRisen

So your point is that because of an unfortunate situation (I am truly sorry to hear about your stroke) that the game is "alienating" you because your body can't keep up with everything going on in the game? That's not the games fault, and I know it's not your fault, but it's not "alienating" anyone.

  • Destiny is suppose to be for everyone! There are many different types of players , 9 years destiny as been rolling , to start alienating people now is not good . Loads of people throwing hate at people who are struggling are sad and pathetic! We have a huge community why do people have to be so narrow minded 🤷🏼‍♂️😂

    • I haven't played as much this Season because of the Difficulty increase. Not because I can't Solo Legend Lost Sectors ( I have several times before) but the Defiant Battlegrounds are tougher, longer and you still have to run them countless times. I played less last Season because the Heist Battlegrounds were trending this way. I can't test weapons as much because the wrong weapons in a playlist Battleground is brutal. Basically, I have to take the game more seriously ...all the time. From Battlegrounds to Open World Neomuna, I have to be mentally on point. Otherwise, a red bar Cabal will end me rather quickly. Of course, Top Tier players may love this, but Mid-Tier players are probably adjusting. I have challenged myself more often to play more difficult Content in the game. I even got the Cyber-Puppy Secret Triumph last Season. ...but every Seasonal Activity in the game, especially those we have to run a bunch, shouldn't feel like a chore to run every single time. You just get game burnout even faster than usual.

    • If you have that much time and can’t manage a bit of difficulty that’s kinda on you. Did you just play patrol for 3,000 hours?

I'm with you here. I don't have any disabilities that impact my ability to play the game, but even though a lot of the content you've been locked out of is still accessible to me, many of those things just aren't fun anymore. Who enjoys dumping multiple mags of ammunition into rank and file enemies? It makes everything feel like a slog. They purportedly did this to make gunplay more relevant and abilities less dominant, but now the only way to clear groups of red bars in a way that's efficient not to mention fun is to fall back on your abilities, because your guns won't cut it! It sure doesn't help that all the new content is obsessed with throwing threshers and turrets at you in huge numbers, like yes, thanks, I enjoy dealing with seeking explosives that can hit me through cover and getting vaporized in less than a second by an enemy that literally spawned behind me. I'm sorry a game you used to love has done this to you, but I just wanted you to know that they're not just alienating disabled or average players - I'm no slouch, not like top 10% sweaty but I've been playing since launch and I'd consider myself above average based on my performance in more difficult matchmade activities like nightfalls, and I think the changes to balance are miserable. I completely agree with you about legend lost sectors as well, locking exotics behind them was always a bad idea but that coupled with the increased difficulty floor has made them frustrating and exhausting. Hopefully they realize they've hurting the majority of their players and wisen up. Honestly Bungie has a lot to learn from competing games like Warframe, making sure the most elite players always find challenge in every activity is a fool's errand. They'll always gravitate toward the new meta and quickly find whatever lets them break the game after every single balance pass, and every step you take to fight that activity makes the game less accessible and less fun for the majority. Just let people enjoy themselves for god's sake.

      • Bungie when'd way overboard, they need to balance it. Destroying healing and dmg reduction, at the same time as increase difficulty by 1-2 for each difficulty, and removing the lowest difficulty option. New casuals or blueberries can't keep up.

        • Every decision they make, they alienate someone. That’s the nature of trying to make a game that will please everyone. Sorry about your brain.

        • as most streamers have openly stated, the "difficulty increase" makes no sense. They made regular/normal activities harder, hurting the ppl that couldn't do the harder activities they made the hardest activities (day 1, master raids) significantly easier. it's so illogical. not to mention pvp... once again punishing the skilled players while also having a horrible meta lol

        • My situation is nowhere as dire as yours, so first off thank you for sharing, but I want to agree wholeheartedly that the new difficulty spike, especially this year, is just taking a LOT of fun out of the game. I’m a stay at home parent and I need to basically be on call for my child all the time. That said, it’s hard to commit to doing higher level activities. I used to run 1st or 2nd tier Nightfalls in years past to get the weekly rewards, but I just got done with a 20-25 minute Arms Dealer run and it was exhausting. Thankfully for this I was able to complete it, but I had to bail on one earlier. And I’m doing them on Hero! The “fixed difficulty” takes a huge amount of fun out of the game and adds unnecessary challenge for those of us who just want to run around and do some space magic. I really hope Bungie reconsiders the difficulty levels in the near future, because it’s definitely hurting the fun and the time I have to commit to certain parts of the game.

        • I think they used to have the balance just right. It allowed all players to achieve a decent number of things, even solo. I do agree that they did need to add Master and Grand Master to more activities, but I strongly disagree that it was a wise move to just universally increase difficulty. They have cut out a percentage of their player-base and that is the dumbest thing I have ever seen a company like Bungie do. Whoever thought this up should be fired. Seriously.

        • The change Bungie made is horrible. They should have made the game harder, but it should have been done at the top end not the baseline difficulty. Ignore the morons saying ''skill issue'' or ''get good''. These are people who should not care about the difficulty of the bottom end of the game at all if they are so good they only do the high end content. They are just low status males in real life who try to find some self worth telling you how much better than you they are in a video game. It's really quite pathetic when you look at it in context. With all of the negative feedback Bungie is receiving I don't think they will be able to ignore this issue. If you do quit keep an eye out for future changes, as I don't think they will all stick at the low end difficulty.

Well said , i also quit because of everything you said. The game is not fun anymore and i used to do bounties , seasonal missions , farming for godrolls too and i had every exotic and cayalyst in the game when beyond light dropped , then new exotics , weapons and all were introduced and sunset was a thing , then i had a feeling that the game was already dying and i quit untill witch queen , then i returned. My biggest mistake ... Cause i was introduced into crafting ! So many time wasted for getting the patern progress , crafting the actual gun , level it up , get the right enhanced perks on it with a memento instead of playing the game and have fun was just nuts. So then i waited patiently for lightfall ... My second mistake ... Battlegrounds remained in the game as "strikes" and one of them is a nightfall. Everything that used to be fun is now boring and the pinacle activities are way above your current power level , you get one shotted in a freakin strike cmon. I dont play daily anymore and would love to play dailey again but if the game remains like this i will not come back either.

          • Well said. I also have been struggling to enjoy Destiny. I just got back into it after taking a break, and I was starting to enjoy it again. Then SBMM happened and Crucible became waaaaay too sweaty to just have fun in. ( I’m not the best at PvP, in fact I’m pretty bad, but it was every once in a while to fart around with some off meta build) Seasonal content has taken a drop in quality recently, becoming more monotonous and repetitive. On top of that, now the new dungeons require their own dungeon key after buying the initial campaign, which were one of the only highish PVE content I enjoyed doing. The recycling of content makes me less hyped for new DLC as well. I just hope Bungie can figure what they are doing wrong and fox something. Destiny is one of my all time favorite games, and I would hate to see it die from the Developers not seeing what the actual problems are. I will continue to play, at least for the time being, and I hope Bungie cleans up the game soon. The new buffs they will be doing are to everything other than smgs is probably the best thing they’ve done in a while, at least in concept. I just hope they can get their -blam!- together.

              • There’s a lot of players who feel just like you, and if you’ve been reading some of the posts, these players aren’t just casual, there are many fair minded people around of all skill levels who are troubled by the difficulty spike. Of course there are some who don’t have the social skills to disagree without hate and insult. Just ignore them, they’re not worth it. Initially I was upset about the difficulty spike for the reasons you gave, now I think I am more bothered that Bungie seems to be treating legitimate concerns with contempt, no comment, no explanation, no graphs to show why the difficulty has been exaggerated, nothing at all. Today I learned that threshers will be weakened, hopefully they provided some broader insight. Bungie should learn the lesson of almost all customer focused businesses that transparency is a good thing.

                • Coming from the opposite side of things, still not top tier but capable of week 1 raiding, doing flawless raids, etc. I agree that the difficulty spike removes all love and fun. Activities that are supposed to be casual aren't anymore and the middle ground for difficulty has disappeared in entirety. Its either a pushover or painful for no reason. Its really a sad state of affairs. To make matters worse, they made us stronger but simeltaneously weaker while making things feel both powerful but also not. Like I don't understand how they did what they did, but nothing feels good. Like at all. In anything in any part of the game in any use case. Even if it melts something just feels wrong. The game has taken a serious nose dive in terms of quality in how content is designed and what difficulty is. I don't understand how they had such a fundamental design philosphy change at the flip of a switch basically. When you look a Vow of the Disciple on normal in Season 16 to any content we have now the difference in how difficulty was expressed is just. Jarring. Vow offered bosses that posed a constant threat and well placed ads with simple mechanics yet ones you have to constantly engage with and be aware of and perform in a timely but not ridiculous fashion. Level design really helped carry things. The level design in Lightfall is just....not there...on any level or activity. This is just but one thing, I could run this list on for a while and break down so much. Just really disappointing. And dont even get me started on PvP.

                      • I bought the game this week to do something and to jump back into Destiny. I’ve largely had fun with it but… I find that the difficulty is way off… Why is stuff one shotting me on patrol but then in missions it’s practically a breeze…. Don’t get me started on Callus. That was just -blam!- ridiculous. I hate the fact the bosses and yellow bar enemies are basically bullet sponges
