How I define a "Good Game"

For me, gaming nowadays has begun to feel a lot more like a chore than something enjoyable. I attribute that to recent games being focused around their respective reward systems (Halo 5's REQ System, any number of FPS's with similar "pack" systems, Destiny's RNG, etc) as opposed to the activities done to unlock said rewards. I stopped playing Halo 5 regularly after I unlocked everything in the REQ system, with Customs and new Updates bringing me back once in awhile. I probably won't play Destiny until RoI comes out, simply because I've done everything I can do on my main (LITERALLY EVERYTHING). I stopped playing Just Cause 3 after I'd unlocked everything. And yet, there are still games that I've basically completed that I still go back to. Burnout Paradise, which is still my favorite game (if only it was BC), is a game I regularly revisit. Fall of Cybertron's Campaign is something I've replayed literally hundreds of times, and I will continue to due so. I've essentially "beat" both games (heck, this is my second save of Burnout Paradise), and yet unlike more recent games, they still keep me interested. Which brings me to my main point: a "good game" is a game that keeps you playing even after you've unlocked everything, beaten all the challenges, killed the final boss, etc. It keeps you playing not because of a goal or reward but because the gameplay is just so well done that the game can survive solely on that. Which is why I also think that games shouldn't have the seeming requirement of having Post-launch Updates or DLC to survive. The game you release should have all the stops pulled out, all the content and ideas you can manage to squeeze into that disc, all available at launch. DLC should be an afterthought, so to speak, a treat to the game's playerbase, something that isn't planned or advertised before the game even launches. And while that's simply not possible with a game like Destiny (which is due to the type of game it is, which I'm fine with), with a game like Halo 5, which I've tried so hard to like, the fact that it shipped with so few core features that even Halo 4 had (and I'm fine with them delaying Forge, because it was so worth it) really ruined 343i's reputation and utterly killed the already-dying Halo Machinima scene. In short, a good game is one that performs at its peak level of enjoyability regardless of how far you've progressed in it or how long it's been out or how many times it's been updated.

        • How to define a good game. Pick up a game, is it Mass Effect 2, the last of us, Knights of the old republic, fallout 3, or oblivion/skyrim. If it's not then it's not a good game

I don't really agree with much here. Most of the best games I've played are ones I've completed once and put to rest. That story is over. I won't forget it and I don't need to do it again. Secondly, DLC. HoS and B&W were so obviously planned prior to the launch of The Witcher 3, but they make excellent additions to that game. A good game to me is dependant on how much I enjoy it - whatever the content.

          • Agreed. Too many games only give you enough entertainment up until you've unlocked everything, while I remember a time when there was nothing to unlock in games other than the next level( think NES, SNES, GENESIS, etc. ). Anyone that plays games today is privileged compared to the video games of old. There's so much to do in todays video games, that it's a shame so many are so boring once you do so. I feel the truly great games are those that I still enjoy after there's nothing new left to do. Destiny is a prime example of this for me, for the most part. There's still a few things I could do in the game...but not much, and I still have fun with it. The gameplay is good enough to keep me coming back occasionally. Off the top of my head, there are a handful of games that do this well for me...
Destiny Split Second Minecraft Fez Little Big Planet Wii Sports Resort Kinect Sports Final Fantasy Series Civilization Series Super Smash Bros. Series Kingdom Hearts Series Megaman Series The Elder Scrolls Series Mario Series Mariokart Series Zelda Series Halo Series Street Fighter Series Just to name a few......
Get games you like! Gamer doesn't mean you buy the next latest and greatest thing. Everyone has there different reasons for liking games. I fall into the category of games that challenge my intelligence, so i play the games that suit. I also fall into into the category of games that suppliment my RL interests. Games are just "Toys" for you to enjoy, and if you don't enjoy them or take your "toys" too seriously!? your doing it wrong.

          • I agree, games should, in general, be focused on the standard that they must have a great amount of replayibility. Destiny does this fairly well. Not perfect, but enough to let me come back each week, though even then my interest is waning. I wish to play my old 360 titles, games that i never get to delve into deeply. Or, at the very least, make a good buck out of them for anyone willing ($10 is a start).

            • Good game== One I enjoy playing. Anything else is to miss the point of PLAYING a game...or anything else for that matter. Which is why I think so many contemporary gamers are unhappy and cynical despite the fact that gaming has NEVER had it as good as it has it right now.

              • I consider a game to be good if I enjoy it. I don't care about what other people say about it.

              • Honestly I'll know a games good if I can get in the mood for it and go play it and have fun. despite it being awhile since i've played. I play my games in cycles. Like when overwatch dropped I played nothing but that for a few weeks. Same with siege and halo 5 etc. I play something so much till I get sick of it and then come back later.

Too many games keep fun game mechanics away from players as part of a tacked on progression system. Then to balance the player progression, the end game is full of tougher versions of the same enemies from the early stages. Don't get me started on the weapons you can only use on the last level.

                • Interesting story, and something to keep me coming back like good multiplayer. I don't feel like I'm doing a chore when I play games like halo 5 multiplayer. It's enjoyable and makes me feel like I'm having fun while working towards a goal.

                • A good game to me is a game that I know I will always enjoy. A game that will keep me playing even years after its release, one that I can enjoy and just have fun with friends.
