Free college: great idea for members of the military, terrible idea for regular citizens.
Why is that?
-
1 ReplyIt's because in the military, you are out in the direct position to serve your country, and some at the possible cost of your life. You are risking your future, your career, pretty much everything, so you can do some duty to your country. That seems like it would be a fair trade for college.

Because people believe that military veterans deserve rights that normal citizens don't.
-
The short story is some people don't want to spend a single dime to try and improve Society. Ironically they have no problem funding Wars or corporate welfare

1 ReplyI hate that argument too. I can't join the military because of Scoliosis. Not everyone can get scholarships and even then the "wealthier" people tend to get them more. At least make college more affordable. It's sad if you file for bankruptcy, student loan debt will never go away. It's freaking criminal.

2 RepliesEdited by Flailing_Weasel: 7/15/2016 11:28:29 AMIt's either I payed for it so you do too, or I don't want to pay for it with my tax dollars. Personally I wish my tax dollars paid for something useful like higher education. The township I live in keeps paving roads that don't have any problems. No potholes. No cracks. But they keep tearing them up and repaving them. All. The. Time.

12 RepliesImo most employers are looking for people who want to keep learning and work hard at what they do. What I believe will happen if college becomes free is employers will require a more advanced degree..
post what you will to speak against me, I will try my hardest to have a reasonable conversation.

Free college: great idea for members of the military, terrible idea for regular citizens. Why is that?
On one hand, you have people who are earning their free college by doing something in exchange for it. On the other hand, you have people receiving free college in exchange for somebody else doing something so they can have that free college.

6 RepliesIf military was free, why am I $50k in debt to student loans? And I served 2 branches to give me the little amount they do. Civilians don't have to train and get shot at for theirs. Huge difference
-
5 RepliesEdited by BlackMormon: 7/14/2016 11:23:50 PMBecause military earned it. Is that not obvious to you?
-
2 RepliesI'm guess people don't mind paying for something when it's a purchase. Purchasing time of peace and safety through deterrence. If someone were asked to pay for another's tuition without anything in return it would not be a purchase. Thus charities and scholarship for such things. I might likely help out someone I know or even a stranger. But would prefer not being expected to.

15 RepliesLazy illegals don't even deserve to stay. So give them free college too? WTH?
-
1 ReplyWhy not just make standard schooling an adequate learning space?
-
4 RepliesEdited by SmashvilleViking: 7/15/2016 8:51:39 PMIt's not "free" for military. We pay into it over a couple of years. I am currently using my Chapter 33 (Post-9/11 GI Bill). I had to pay into it for 2 or so years.
-
2 RepliesHow is it free if there in the military???if you consider that free then join the military simple :)
-
Cause people from the military are the man's pawns and a crucial part of owning someone is giving them something they feel is valuable to deepen their commitment to your cause.
-
2 RepliesIt's not free if you have to serve to get it.
-
7 RepliesWhat I don't understand is why anyone would rather have MORE stupid people in our country. Do people just forget what the point of education is?
-
Because people will find anything to complain about. I think the main excuse is it will increase taxes? Like really? We pay a bit more taxes while ANYONE can go to college for free-ish. Sounds selfish.
-
1 ReplyAs a veteran, I can tell you, free college wasn't worth the shit I went through.
-
3 RepliesBecause I don't want to fund a generation of van wilders.
-
Well what will happen is if it's free not everyone will be able to go anyway. There's not enough schools to accept everyone so what happens is you have to graduate in a predetermined top percentage of your class to gain entrance. Grades are not good or just average. No college for you.
-
Because they deserve it after risking their lives. The rest don't, work for your own shit
-
9 RepliesAs an incentive to try to get brighter more ambitious people into the military, while ensuring they are better able to contribute to society when they leave it, sounds fair to me. People in the military make up a tiny fraction of total youth in each age group/cohort so there's far less strain on public finances than subsidizing education for everyone.
-
We get it. You want free shit, but signing your life away for 4 years means the benefits you receive from that agreement aren't free.
-
2 RepliesRisking your life overseas in the name of your country overqualifies you for something like this, unlike some greasy kid who lives on welfare and likes using derogatory terms on the internet as comebacks.

10 RepliesCollege isn't necessary My father barley graduated high school, owns his own business and makes 100k+ a year. Why is it he can accomplish this but lazy people can't? If you can't afford college, join the military. They will pay you to go.
