Sniping in Destiny...

Oh how many times it's happened. I see a sniper at the back of the map. I pull out my Badger CCL/MIDA/etc and line up the shot. About this time, said sniper sees me and raises his rifle to challenge me. I peg him twice in the head, then he promptly gives me the proverbial middle finger and kills me with a headshot. Here's my issue: this happens a LOT. The occasional lucky shot I can deal with, but when I'm shooting a guy in the head, he should not be able to maintain the line of sight needed to headshot me anyways...with consistency. Now I'm not the type to complain without offering solutions, so here's mine. In my perfect Destiny world(s), aim assist would be removed from sniper rifles as it's my belief that sniping should be difficult and reward a truly skilled hand. However, through discussion with an individual of a differing point of view, I realize that this would not be viable without crushing sniping enjoyment for the more casual crowd. Therefore, my proposal is to make there be significantly more sniper scope bounce upon receiving a headshot. This way, if you take a shot to the torso/arm/leg, you can still fight through and land the kill-shot. However, if you're taking a face full of lead/plasma, you can't just say "lol cute" and consistently land head shots. I am but a lone guardian. I want to hear the thoughts of my fellow players. Edit: I am totally open to alternative suggestions to what I've offered if anybody cares to share. I value constructive dialogue in the name of improving a game. Edit 2: Some solid proposals I've seen: -De-scope on headshot -Place "sway" mechanic on snipers -Extend ADS times/lower overall Handling for Sniper Rifles based on impact (Higher Impact = lower handling speed) -Give sniper bullets travel time akin to Queenbreaker's Bow -Perk that has a chance to descope snipers upon headshot -Randomize flinch pattern/direction -Scale the amount of flinch/de-scope based on a combination of the range and impact stats. So a weapon like Badger CCL would cause massive flinch or de-scope upon headshot but an auto rifle like Doctrine of Passing would cause little to no flinch. Some less solid/reliable proposals: -Git gud -Lrn 2 Strafe -Don't challenge snipers (they are Gods) -Raise your K/D, then complain -Lern 2 stratajize I'll update this as I see more. Thanks guys and gals!

        • Not sure if you realize but making it take longer to ADS will only increase the amount of hardscoping.

            • There are great ideas in your post and i hope that some of them can take place in game. Personaly i think that the worst about sniping is close range snipe..its just ridiculous that we are able to headshot another player almost at melee range with a sniper. And this is also why 90% of pvp players main a sniper. We can close and long range 1 hit kill, ressnipe, shut down supers, etc, wich make it the most "complete" weapon in game. Cheers

                • There's 3 types of special weapon (Ok 4 but Sidearms, really?) each a 1 hit kill.... Close Range - Shotguns Medium Range - Fusion Rifles Long Range (and actually Short Range as well if you're good with them) - Snipers No matter what you do, no matter what other Special weapons you add into Destiny 98% of people will choose the 1 hit kill weapons, purely because they want to win, because they want to kill the enemy before the enemy kills them. Shotguns promote rushing, Snipers promote camping. Fusions promote nothing because Snipers and Shotguns are just better at killing because they kill quicker (without charge times)

                  • First off, in current Meta you really should not challenge a sniper rifle at medium to long range with anything but another sniper rifle. Flank around and close the distance. But to your point, Destiny pvp as a whole suffers from a discrepancy in pacing. On one hand everything that isnt your primary, a weak grenade, or your melee has potential to kill in one shot, making ttk mere milliseconds; and on the other hand, the developers want you to be able to react and have fair fights where you can understand whats happening and then counter it. The problem with this is that it cant be both, and until they decide on one (which will change the entire way the game plays, and they never will do that because theyd be scared to) its always going to be underwhelming to use primaries at all. They can either increase time to kill on everything else, or decrease time to kill on primaries making everything down you incredibly fast, and they arent going to do either because they dont know how, and I dont think anyone knows how. It wouldnt make sense for a sniper rifle to take more than one headshot to kill, but people complain that it does. If you changed it to 2 shots, no one would use them. Its an impossible paradox that everyone thinks they have a way to fix when no one really does. The option of making sniper rifles take more skill to use is the only fix to the problem, but then it offends casual players, and that is a huge fear for any game studio nowadays. Increasing skill gap in any way makes people that play and practice the game more often have a clear advantage over people that dont play very much. That should be a given, but game studios would rather make more money having it be easy to play than make a more rewarding experience over time. So basically this just means that Destiny's crucible is impossible to balance. Its purposefully unbalanced so that someone can pick up the game and immediantly have fun. They have the impossible task of making the game seem as balanced as possible, without it ever being balanced. So sniper rifles will probably never be changed, because if they are altered from their current state in any way, it offends casual Destiny players and hurts their flow of cash. And I dont mean that in a negative way necessarily, because the more money they make, the more (hopefully better) content we get.

                          • I completely agree with you, scouts are meant to counter snipers and to be honest, they are very poor agains an average+ skilled sniping player who given the game mechanics you described, has a very descent amount of time to aim for your head (with plenty of aim assist) in order to easily being you down. The body shot low-stagger (probably even reduced after the proposed solution) , and the higher headshot stagger seems like an incredible idea.

                                    • You might notice no one complained about snipers in year one. There we had even less flinch. It's because back then primaries such as thorn and tlw could melt peo0pe trying to camp with snipers. I think we should make primaries stronger to achieve a similar effect without repeating the problems with the house of wolves meta.

                                      • Ya sniping here is easy..I picked up a sniper and it took a few days to get used to the damn scope bc the scope takes up your entire screen! So it will throw you off in the beginning , but as u use it constantly long enough u won't even noticed it anymore , but intead ur eyes will start to focus on the dot. So all these snipers pro, they can suck it lol bo3 sniping takes more skills than this

                                      • sniping with the mechanics of destiny really takes no skill. bungies answer to the sniping epidemic was to only limit the amount of ammo you could carry to minimize the sniping. but not to fix the actual issues. they wont fix it because it keeps players playing when they know they can get easy kills.

                                      • I don't think descoping would be a good idea, but having head shots cause more flinch is a good idea. Damage falloff and gun impact should also affect flinch.

                                        • Hey, I think in the ttk or house of wolves, bungie buffed the flinch when you getting shot at while sniping. If you are good at sniping, you could pull that off, but most times you are dead. There is also a good way to snipe someone when they are shooting at you, T.V. went over it in his yr1 vid i think and it works. But i feel ya, when that happens to me, I am like..."What!....."

As a sniper, I just say decrease the RoF on snipers. The point of sniping is to ambush, assist, or take out a (singular) target. So when we can't do one of the three, the penalty should be that we are defenseless for a certain amount of time. This way there can be a diversity of snipers in destiny: The high impact snipers make a lower rate of fire weapon (around 2x longer RoF than a low impact sniper, but do 2x the damage in PvE), and higher RoF are only on low impact snipers. Bungie might even be able to make a high RoF and high impact exotic sniper.
This is what would be best for snipers imo, and will help out the crucible community
