Could Destiny 2 ditch light levels?

The April 12th update to the loot drops is seen as a positive step forward for Destiny. We are understandably worried that Bungie will regress, and ruin the experience with the "large expansion" this fall or Destiny 2 next year. I have a a theory about where player progression is going. Bungie was pretty clear that the early mass exodus of Guardians from vanilla Destiny was driven by the player's inability to raise their level past 20. Importantly, Bungie responded by making the player level a non-issue in Year 2. We all reached level 40 within a few hours of the The Taken King dropping and forgot that our players have levels separate from light level. Then Bungie experimented with the double RNG system pretty much ruined the reward experience for the last 7 months. However, Bungie also adjusted the power curve for Iron Banner so that light level differences are almost negligible. Now, after the April 12th update, Destiny has a progression system that makes attaining max light level not only quick, but also guaranteed. Even more important, the highest light level activity is 330 while players can progress to light level 335. These extra 5 light levels are like prestige levels. This gets us to Destiny 2. I think Bungie will drop the entire leveling system as we know it in favor of a prestige system. The goal won't be to reach a higher player level in order to run a higher level activity needed to reach a higher level. The light system was a hamster wheel that turned off casual players. Instead, the goal will be achieving prestige levels and collecting rare gear with rare perks. It will be like running Vault of Glass for Fatebringer after reaching level 34 or grinding Nightfall for the Imago Loop. It will be a game made for casual players with ample carrots for hard core players. The results of removing the light level system would be immediately positive for the game. Activities won't be gated by player level or light level. The light level gate results in a King's Fall completion rate of 10% for normal mode and 5% for hard mode. This means Bungie could stop making raids and more than 90% of players wouldn't care. Removing the light level hurdle would make the raids relevant, and not just the current raid but all raids. Bungie would have no more reason keep matchmaking out of Prison of Elders and Nightfall. More players would run Iron Banner, and the bump in the Iron Banner population would improve matchmaking. (Though I hope to the Traveler that Bungie buys some dedicated servers for Destiny 2) Infusion would be unnecessary except maybe for combining perks with cosmetics. I hope this is where Bungie is going with Destiny 2.

  • I was just thinking the same thing. The grind is real in Destiny, but you will never feel OP. That's my problem with it! Playing a game like Final Fantasy, grinding gets you stronger than what you're opponents. So you know every hour spent is progress. Destiny can't work that way with how the player returns to the same areas. Loot is a better goal anyway! You don't see people screaming with excitement over getting a new level. Some people get hype over that last piece to get max light, but that's it. Putting the focus on weapons, gear, perk rolls, and cosmetics gives everyone a carrot to grind for without being overshadowed by a level of any type. I love your idea about a prestige system! Great way to flaunt your seniority. I feel like that what the grimoire was getting at, but missed. Taking a look back, they chose to hide it a bit too.

  • The changes in rewards and light are simply to try and make you remember the next few months and forget the last 7. New dlc soon. Then it will be ttk all over again.

  • The light system for leveling is terrible. Not sure why it was instituted to begin with.

  • I hope they change everything in Destiny 2 What we are experiencing now is for the casuals. I did one raid first week of update, and both characters were over 330. I didn't hoard engrams or motes, I just leveled up appropriately because the drops are scaled to your light level. Things need to go back to Year 1 in some ways. Vault of Glass drops, specifically. We should still be earning end game content. We should still be grinding away at 29 trying to obtain 30. Infusion should've been a factor though, so you could wear any type of gear you wanted, but you would actually have to earn the gear to infuse. Every Iron Banner drop I've had this week, has been 333 or higher. That's a joke in itself. I pray that Destiny 2 is Rated M. If it is, they won't have as many restrictions regarding telling story, they can go into more detail of the great wars that have happened. We could experience more in depth upgrading and leveling, stats that actually influence the way we play.
not to mention that the 10-17 year olds would become the minority, and not the majority.
Unfortunately, Destiny 2 will most likely be like Number 1. We can only hope for the best. The only thing I need for D2, is Dedicated Servers.

Etheric Light was, IMO, the perfect levelling system. No waiting for a weapon to drop for infusion, no waiting for that one piece of max level armour, it was just: finish an endgame activity. And then boom, maxed out one piece of armour/weapon. Although tbh, I didn't read your whole post, I'm tired as balls

Fall dlc isnt real that what bungie said. Although they mention something like a clue in the twitch or somewhere. Like they said they will release the "FULL" sequel in 2017.

            • I was thinking about this for some time now. I think bungie would be better off letting players level up without a cap. Then by the next expansion bungie would basically see where the players generally are in terms of the levels and scale the new raids a couple levels about where everyone is. Then depending on the level bracket you're in you'll enter a variation of that specific activity. Honestly I thinks that would make iron banner and trials more fun too and level advantages would actually seem to effect these activities more.

              • The connection I'm making with this is like how COD does it with max prestige at 10. Getting to lvl 55 is the max, but prestiging was the trophy that stuck out more. I could see something like this being implemented into a light level/regular level system

Instead, they throw #### at the wall and sees what sticks. I think that they have the right system in place. They had the wrong drop levels. I think that they are hitting close to the right drop level for the system. I suspect we'll see this system continue on perhaps with tweaks. Think crucible balance. In the beginning there were wild power swings. Now, the tuning in finer and the disruption much less.

                      • Nope - grinding for higher light on the treadmill is the point of the game. All the missions, strikes etc etc etc are all repayable for one simple reason - getting players to grind for higher light levels. Right now bungie may have hit on an idea that could work. With each year - light levels are adjusted. During the games yearly edition release time frame bungie increases the levels required to be maxed out and drops a mini update around a theme so that players have something new to grind. To this end- in the autumn light will go to 420 and we'll get a new sub theme to grind on. I think we may get a 'fresh' set of old strikes and a new public event scenario which means we have to collect items in order to open up a new set of levels or re-open one of the old raids. It's easy enough stuff for bungie to do. Whatever it'll be we'll all play to one degree or another.

I liked the old system in year 1. Granted both systems of *overleveling* is the exact same in my eyes. I just prefered how the old one looked. Right now it is gear score, which is nothing new. I wish there were more options for customization. Like costume slots, so I can stop looking like everyone else.

                              • In answer to your opening question, I say "yes". Just not in the way you want it. I think light levels COULD be ditched...for Darkness levels. Look at Year 1. You had a level, then you had a Light level on top. I always wondered why specify this. And the main reason I could think is that, perhaps in the future, you could be level 20 and then choose a path - Light or Darkness. The story holds a number of Guardians who strayed from the Traveller's Light. And if the original story and even current sections of Grimoire are to be believed, rightly so. It fits both game mechanic and narrative. Perhaps Bungie might travel such a path. Iokay, in hindsight, o got a little ramble from here on, but, please, read on for my own concept on how to pull it off... ...so i was a little disappointed when Taken King ditched this. But I love the variety infusing allows. Just imagine thoigh being able to infuse Light or Darkness into your items. The two might cancel one another out, allowing you to go pure Light or pure Darkness (which might grant access to skills, perks, classes or exotic weapons) but render you more affected by weapons of the opposing faction. Or you might wield both and walk the middle line (with its own Rewards). Rather than have level as a ladder, have it more of a spectrum that you as the player can dictate through your choices. Imagine being Pure of Light, but dropping an awesome Darkness only weapon. You might either destroy the weapon for parts or you might choose a longer path and opt to fall into Darkness to grant you the ability to use it. To aid in your shift, there could be factions with Bounties that reward you with items that are purely infusion fuel or perhaps, more powerfully, items that allow you to corrupt or cleanse your non exotic loot, switching them from Light to Darkness or vice versa. Then imagine the possibilities of Pvp. The Crucible is a training ground, but new levels might allow for Light Vs Darkness matches with side specific rewards. Man, I am now rambling. But the potential in such a system is intriguing....and is just a dream.

I think your typing overtook your brain there There is no matchmaking in nf and CoE because these are meant to be engage activities that require team work and communication (well that is what they are meant to be) It has been so easy to get light levels (even before the last update) that it rarely keeps people out of IB. You may miss one, but are ready for the next one. If people don't play IB, it's more likely because they don't see the point in the grind (for higher levels) or they are not pvp players or they are bored and playing a different game
