On Teabagging, Emotes, General Taunting

So like, there's this thing that creeps up in the various game specific FPS communities in regard to Tea Bagging, that is crouching repeatedly over a downed opponent while they are likely watching it on their respawn screen. The action is a taunt resembling a more expressive form of... well you know. So some players seems to take this, and other such taunting whether codified (actually animated taunts and emotes) or not, as a disrepectful and even bannable action. The psychology at play here is a mix of post-defeat angst (often known as 'Salt'), and presumed etiquette derived from what I have no choice but to link to Scrub mentality (look up David Sirlin for more on that subject). As somebody only occasionally does this, but has no regrets doing so, I'm going to offer some advice to those who are deeply offended by the notoriously popular, long lasting manual taunt. - Teabagging is essentially repeatedly inputting the crouch command over your avatar's corpse. Unless you wish for devs to add 'cooldown' to the mechanic, or remove crouching entirely, you will never remove the ability to do so in games that have crouch. Ever. Know this. - As such, what you are offended by is a spammed player action, which only has power you give it by actually voicing your grievances on a forum. Doing this made teabagging what it is. Know this. - I, and others, are more likely to teabag a kill we considered particularly satisfying (a camping sniper, a streaking player, someone who was basically a nuisance). So in a bizarre way this should taken as an honor. Especially when... - Teabagging costs us and the team tactical movement and leaves us open to attack. I have killed a player while tea bagging his teammate, and was a glorious Halo 3 moment for me, but this is an exception. Teabagging is one player wasting time taunting another player who may not even be looking at the screen. - We are teabagging in games that likely have death indicator waypoints on screen. A habitual teabagger should not enjoy so much crouch time. - Stop taking any in-game action this seriously, outside of the disadvantages teabagging makes for a player. - The real issue with your feelings on TBing is that you were defeated. The best way to avoid being TB'd is to not die. But everyone gets fragged eventually, so your best bet is to roll with it. - The exact point is disrespect. Accusing it of its key purpose is absurd. You're saying the problem with fire is it's hot. - Reporting players for teabagging is a waste of support resources. Don't be that guy or girl. Pressing a button over and over will never be considered actual abuse, even in this current environment. - Teabagging the last person who teabagged you is delicious. Do it. Or not. Whatever - No; somebody teabagging tells you nothing about their personality, financial status, living status, race, gender, politics, or skill level. Although at the very least you know he or she can kill you for a teabag in the first place. That's it, tho. Stop with the salty analysis. - It's just a game. Get gud. EDIT: People who teabag are very likely immune to insults. Trying to bring up my KD means less than nothing to me. You only project how sensitive you are attempting so. And in any case look up my YouTube vids. I'm happy with my skillset. Or not. Whatever. It's a game.

Question: If it is just a game, then why do players spend their entire day on playing "just a game"? In my opinion, all guardians are fighting, killing, and training to defeat the Darkness. We should all be on the same team. We are Guardians. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." Abraham Lincoln. Players should not be hating each other. So what if someone beats you trials of osiris. We are a united force against the Darkness. It should still be that way. Whenever I get "t bagged", I think it means that players will remember that Guardian who made them laugh a little.

There is a reason that show boating and other shows of poor-sportsmanship are illegal in pro-sports. Aggressive displays either in retaliation of failure or in expression of skill are indicators of aggressive behavior in life. By arguing "it's just a game" you are neglecting the fact that there would be an aggressive impulse to use bullying tactics during gaming; an impulse that isn't only there when a screen is in front of you. The fact that those who use cyber-aggression in this way continue to argue that it isn't aggressive is exactly the way such sociopathic tendancies would be expected to present in a clinical situation. I don't expect the argument to go away any more than I expect cults to go away; those that defend an insane belief that their way is right and good when it is antithetical are merely human. That being said, if you display an act of cyber-aggression among a group of like-minded individuals, you can expect furtherance of aggression. The heightened sense of fear it creates for the player is a sort of drug which becomes quickly addictive. Regardless of how well you word your argument for cyber-aggression, the fact is that it is an indicator of the general decline in the state of emotional empathy and awareness (which shouldn't be a surprise for anyone currently watching the U.S. presidential race). For those with a logical and non-aggressive mindset, seeing such behavior in a game shouldn't be a surprise, or cause righteous anger. It is abhorrent, and promotes bad-sportsmanship, and as previously stated is a red-flag from a mental health standpoint, but only in rare cases do such individuals have the ability to succeed in anything other than mediocrity. After all the studies about how aggressive tendancies are the main indicator of low intelligence, such actions should be seen for what they are. Edit: trolling rageaholics, though child's play (much easier than shooting for me!), has been the most fun I've had all day. Much appreciated. Tl;Dr: This world is full of all different kinds, but when it comes to T-bagging there are Kirks and there are Spocks. Passion versus logic. Each are equally necessary and viable on the battleground. Final edit: I woke up this morning to quite a few notifications. It's both happy and sad, I received many thank you notes. There was as much hate as I'd expect for providing any sort of logical discourse to a forum being populated as it is. I found that many people are truly disturbed by the action. Again, don't be. The person "t-bagging" you isn't worth the salt or anger. As you can clearly see by their replies, they are raging at the world, the success they find in pixels is the only success. They say "git gud." I say git gud in your brain. Pity those who act out their base animal nature. Let me take the hate. Thanks for the love and support, fellow Guardians. I'll see you on the battlefield.

TL;DR should say, "if you can't handle tbagging, clam slamming, emotes and waving in your death screen get off the internet and never come back, you're a a sensitive vagina."

                          • I don't know why people get so bent out of shape about t bagging Usually they do it for a reason like you said. I probably owned them and they were salty The only thing I have to say is when people bag me for no reason. Like Trials, it's T bag central. I just usually ask "why?" Out loud I dance before I bag. I think it's funny and harmless and obviously there for a reason since bungie made it to where a emote can be directed towards a certain player. I find all these things funny but people take it to heart

I respect your KD and your TB etiquette, because the only thing worse than being sacked by a God, is being sacked by a scrub. Btw, I T-Bag everyone I kill all the time. Win or lose rain or shine, I sack those hoes. So keep up the T-Bag and let all the guardians have it. Gg mate.

I found him, assassinated him, and gave a good t bag. Not a minute later I found the same guy in the same spot. So what do I do? Slug him in the back, and t bagged him. It was glorious

                                  • Well I'm an adult with a career/mortgage/wife, so real world problems tend to bother me more than tea bagging. I usually laugh when someone does it to me. However, I got bagged after being killed literally a millisecond from activating the rift. Then, I happened to kill the spark carrier who bagged me, right before he ignited the rift. It only felt appropriate to return the testicular favor.
