Why even have exotic weapons?

What is the point of having exotic weapons anymore? Exotics are considered exotics because they held certain advantages over other legendaries. Now with all the crying and whining for nerfs, Bungie is just negating and taking away all the exotic perks. TLW Perk is now non existent. The White Nail perk that made the Black Hammer superior was changed to pull ammo from reserves when turned into the Black Spindle. All they had to do was make the Black Hammer an exotic and kept the perk. Mida multitool is being nerfed as well. Gjallarhorn wolfpack rounds were nerfed. Vex Mythoclast prenerf was a beast. Hawkmoon perk was nerfed. The Truth will be receiving less rockets when you pick up heavies in crucible. Why even have exotics when theyre just going to nerf them? Why not just get rid of exotics and make all weapons legendary since you want to make it all the same and generic? Exotics are supposed to give you an advantage, thats the whole point of having them. Instead lazy, entitled people cry and complain because theyre being outgunned by exotics they themselves can earn. Get better, get the weapons other people are using against you and fight back. Get better and stop feeling sorry for yourself and cry for a nerf because you are tired of dying. Edit: If exotics are merely for the "looks" and are supposed to only be "unique" and "different" but provide no advantage, whether slight or a large amout, then how come you can only equip one piece of exotic at a time? Class items might be more cosmetic than anything but you can't tell me a Guardian wearing all exotic gear and equipped with all exotic weapons has no advantage over one with a full set of legendary gear and weapons. To the ones saying it's not more powerful but more "unique". How much more unique will exotics be when Bungie is going after the very perks that make exotics "unique"? If exotics don't give an advantage why wouldn't they let you use more than one at a time? Is it because it would be unfair? If they hold no advantage how can they be unfair?

  • They make this game function like an RPG, and in RPG's there will always be better weapons and better gear than others. They make it feel like Exotics should be like that, but they're not. They're the same tier as Legendaries, to be honest. Sometimes the exotic perks works, sometimes it doesn't.

    • Exotics were never about being "stronger" than other guns. They're guns with unique mechanics and abilities that differentiate them from the rest of the herd. Even with balance changes, most of the exotics still have some edge over the majority of the legendaries in the game. -The Invective generates it's own ammo for example. It also fires at full auto. Not that unique of a perk now, but in Vanilla, it was the only shotgun other than the Found Verdict that was guaranteed to have that perk. -Mida still gives players a substantial agility boost. Other scouts can't support that. No other gun period does that to that extent. -Red Death not only heals the player guaranteed on kill, but has a unique place in the Pulse Rifle family by having high impact like The Messenger and Spare Change while firing at the speed of Nirwen's Mercy and 55 allFATE. -Truth was a terrible example as they didn't even nerf the exotic perk in any way. All they did was make it so that you can't get FOUR ROCKET SHELLS in a singe heavy pickup in PvP. The gun is still has higher tracking than any other rocket launcher on top of having the highest reserve ammo AND having Grenades and Horseshoes. It's still hands down one of the greatest rocket launchers to ever grace this game. -Black Spindle still outclasses all other sniper rifles in limited damage windows even if you can't pull ammo from hammer space. -No Time to Explain can basically fire infinitely under very easy to set up circumstances. -All of the HoW exotics are uniquely their own in every way. No other guns in the game are remotely like them. -Gjallarhorn's wolf pack rounds were nerfed, but they still have 2/3 of their original power meaning they still pack a punch. Still the strongest rocket launcher in the game in that respect. Every with the nerf, bringing it to year two would have seen the same elitist mentality that it brought in year one. -Hawkmoon took one of the bigger hits of all the other exotics, but it still has MULTIPLE lucky rounds, a larger than average magazine and very good stats across the board. -TLW is essentially a fully automatic hand cannon. Even without the damage bonus from its exotic perk, it's still a -blam!-ing monster because it basically fires full auto. That's incredibly powerful by itself without ANY other bonuses. I could go on, but I've made my point about the uniqueness of the exotics. I understand that them nerfing the guns can have a negative effect on the guns in general, but they need to be balanced. Earning the same guns that you're getting bodied with and then fighting fire with fire is what Bungie is trying to avoid. They want diversity in their game, and frankly, the players should too. The problem is that while everyone can use whatever they want, players on the lower end of the spectrum will instinctively use more powerful guns. Logically, this makes sense for most people, but the problem is that they aren't doing it because they like strong guns and think they're cool. Well, some of them are, but a lot of them feel like that's their only option. They can't beat these guns, so they use them too. They have no other options. Even in higher levels of play, the same can be said. Everybody's going to be even more tied down to the best weapons because winning actually matters in game modes like Trials of Osiris and Iron Banner. You can work around these guns when you're better than scrubs, but it's still easier--and better strategically--to use guns that are more likely to win you an encounter. Decreasing your odds of winning is silly. By having more options, people won't feel tied down to a select few weapons. This also applies to subclass changes as well, but that's not what we're talking about right now. Also, to your point about not being able to have more than one exotic armor and weapon on: Exotics, especially armor, grant very good battle perks. Alone they may not be that impressive, but together, they'd be ridiculous powerful. Imagine having Red Death, Invective and Truth in PvP. One gun heals you after every successful gunfight where you earn the kill, one generates its own ammo in a meta where special is highly preferred by most players and the last one is an insanely accurate rocket launcher with plentiful ammo reserves. It's ridiculous. That's an absurd argument to make in your own defense. TL;DR Exotics are unique and still hold certain advantages even after nerfs. Having guns that completely outshine everything else is just bad game design and to not change it is shitty balancing. It doesn't matter if they aren't all powerful because that was never the point. The point was for unique mechanical functions. They shouldn't always be the answer to every gunfight, and they shouldn't reign supreme. Some nerfs were heavier than they needed to be, such as Ice Breaker, but a gun like Vex Mythoclass desperately needed a tone down. Bungie's smart to make these changes, they just shouldn't be too aggressive with them which they definitely seem that understand more than they did before.

        • Exotics were right in year 1, you had to make a decision to forfeit the great perks of one gun to equip a different one. An easy way to stop exotics being nerfed to uselessness was to just exclude them from crucible. But crucible rules the game apparently, so they have destroyed the fun in pve to try and "balance" an unbalanceable Pvp system.

          • Everyone claiming exotics were meant to be OP should check the 1 December 14 weekly update. They said they are meant to sound, look, and feel OP (cosmetic) without breaking game balance. They are not meant to be OP, just cool.

            • I see people drunk the Kool-Aid regarding balance. As long as PvP and PvE are, tied together, there will NEVER be a weapon balance. And you people who keep thinking there's some balance to be achieved are only deluding themselves. As long as Bungie keeps tweaking weapons for PvP "fairness", they'll lose their PvE effectiveness, and that's an imbalance in itself. Making weapons bland isn't balance. Hell, it's a cheap way to avoid trying to balance them. What people are calling balance it just Bungie tweaking weapons to cater to the PvP crowd, and that's it. Even in that, they fail since one weapon will emerge from the meta to rule them all. Every. Single. Time. And I see the OP's edit sure got a lot of people tripping over themselves trying to explain. That's the very paradox of how Exotics are currently working in this game.

            • Make exotics too different or too strong and all you get is whining. "Must have maxed Gally" and "Nerf Thorn" was all we got in Y1 and that's why we have bland exotics in Y2.

            • What bungie could do that would be pretty great is to have black spindle keep the old perk, but only let it have 6 ammo at any time. Mag of 3, reserves of 3. Makes it a DPS machine but there's a big trade off and your punished if you miss

Exotics are only different from non exotic items. The intrinsic quality of an exotic is not how powerful it's perks are. It is how a perk or ability the exotic has sets itself from others and gives its fluff/favour. This is not wow or some other mmo whereby you get Stick A and Stick B that stick B is x10 better than stick A. They have a gimmick e.g. Something that other items commonly do not have. The term exotic is what destiny calls this trait. The term exotic "DOES NOT DEFINE POWER OR USEFULNESS IN META PVP/PVE.". Any usefulness in game is a secondary concern/coincidence. An not the primary focus. Anyone posting otherwise is what is wrong with the community. Edit 1: Due to some forum randoms who can't read, Modified my post for clarification OP has been posted in comments below. Edit 2: To those people who say why only 1 exotic per type. The answer to that is simple. It's a game rule. This ends that debate. A game rule requires no justification. If you do not like tough you can play another game. Now mechanic wise there would be considerable balance issues if you could use any number of exotics. That and there is another mentionable reason why the limit exists. if you could equip 3 weapon exotics and 4 armour exotics. That would not "feel" exotic. It would feel like the standard option. An exotic by itself should stand out from your other gear. However not power wise as mentioned above. It has a unique trait no other item has. If all items are exotic it makes it less important having that one exotic choice. Lore wise there could be any number of reasons. Exotics are power hungry or heavy. Space Magic Aside. Maybe exotic have some internal conciousness and they hate each other and refuse to function if you try and use more than one. If you are still reading this :), Get gud Devs have shown this mentality in exotic design multiple times. Being ignorant of it, or pretending it is an opinion and not fact is idiocy. An a wise man once said do not argue with idiots.

                  • The point of exotic weapons was to not be "OP" but to be unique from other weapons. TLW still has the hidden perk called "CRUTCH"

                  • They took away the perk that made TLW truly exotic. Bonus damage when firing from the hip. Gettting two headshots with TLW when hipfiring is arguably much more hard than landing a headshot with a sniper. That's a fact because I don't recall two shooting people with TLW at all but o have alot of memories of getting a headshot with any sniper.

                      • for real if people would stop fking flocking to the """"""""""""""""""meta""""""""""""" to the point where in pve 2 people in a match aren't using the """""""""""""""""""""""""meta""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""""" primaries or specials bungie is at fault and so the are the players. As for exotics they wouldn't get crippled if they weren't so common if people weren't guaranteed to get 1 or more for being a remote competent player who can complete the basic content. This fking common sense but if you say something like remove/change xur your just a snowflake elitist a-hole. PICK ONE AND STICK WITH IT either they should be common and weak or EXOTIC and powerful they can't be both.

                      • THIS...."thorn now reduced to 4 ticks at 2 per tick.."... like whats the point of going into crucible with them and dominating... id whip out ol' vex metho and gank them thorns... having exotics now is just for bragging rights... doesnt even feel good anymore to get an exotic its just like... ehh good thing i have more room in my vault now... i swear the only time id use them is when my friends are asking if id gotten one... show it off... back in vault... there is nothing "exotic" about them anymore... Y1 was great... Y2... every gun literally feels the same to me... exotic to blues... just because the lowest denominator of players complained about being killed in one match by a certain gun... bungie feels the need to nerf the only thing that makes exotics an exotic. • Have you also noticed that instead of buffing weapons Bungie would rather nerf them? I was using a fusion rifle and I realized that it didn't get nerfed in the patch. I realized that instead of buffing fusions, they nerfed shotguns and sniper. I understand that it was the Pvp side of things that caused Bungie to nerf them and not about fusion rifles, but I found that interesting nonetheless
