Have a guess.
Bungie doesn't listen to us? Wrong.
They're too complicated? Wrong again.
Wanna know why everybody? Activision.
Yeah, yet again the publisher. You see Activision don't want Destiny to have private lobbied because then it will become a competitive shooter.
And Activision don't want that, because of another game.
Call of Duty
Yeah, that game is their competitive game and they don't want Destiny to challenge it. With the nature of Destiny private lobbies would end up leading to it being a competitive game. This is why you will not get private lobbies, even if Bungie really damn wanted to.
Edit: Artificial competition would help, true, but with the tourney hosting they do for CoD which costs a lot (without sponsor reimbursement) and to do that for another IP which got mediocre reviews and has not got a good reputation (thus putting off sponsors and potential viewers) would end up in a possible loss. If the game makes it big then it's worth it but so far it hasn't really been well received. You wouldn't want to advertise with a company that made a 6/10 game for said game. The risk/reward isn't good enough for AV. And f they don't host the tourneys it's going to be other people who do, and they'll do free tourneys to start with and make it big. Once the name is established it would likely diversify and compete with Activison for CoD tourney profits and sponsors.
At least that's my 15-min shower thought run down.
Edit 2: I really want to have a custom lobbies mode FYI, and personally I do see profit in it for Bungie but as in edit 1 it's a risk for them.
If you have any thoughts on this issue please post below.

Why does everyone over think this we just want to have fun with our friends and I think private lobbies would just be another fun feature to the game everyone on this game just bitches, and sure people will want to make a competitive aspect out of it but the most important thing is us, the community. So if that's what we want just give it to us
-
Never thought of this. Makes perfect sense tho!! I really do wish we could get private games..

1 ReplyWhat about the balancing
-
2 RepliesAlso you could totally cheese crucible bounties, quests, exotic crucible bounties, etc.
-
4 RepliesDestiny would never be a competitive shooter even with private lobbies and dedicated servers. There isn't even a basic physics engine in the game for bullet drop, much less anything approaching a balanced meta.
-
7 RepliesThis is incorrect Bungo has said the reason it's no available, at least in Destiny 1,is because it wouldn't be used by most of the community
-
1 Reply>expected a post talking about coding and programming and the hassles of separating private from public >was disappointed
-
I hope they do , then there would be less sweaty people in regular crucible.
-
2 RepliesDon't think you are right. Private lobbies are not compatible with any of the key features of the meta game - bounties, earning marks/other currencies, leveling up weapons/characters/subclasses/ factions and post game rewards. Not to mention all the testing people could do of strategies - picking loadouts and perk trees, testing maps for hiding spots and cheats etc. All they would do is encourage offline practice, reduce active playerbase in main game, increase cheese tactics, increase the speed at which best tactics/meta take over everything. It would make trials even worse- everyone would practice, then struggle to find games, then be pissed by cheap cheeses worked out offline. But worse than all of this - those people with friends and fireteams would disappear more than lonewolves from the open crucible - game balance and skill levels would go out of whack and their wouldn't be as many players online.

1 ReplyCoD's esports community is one of the smallest. It's absolutely miniscule compared to something like Starcraft or CSGO.
-
I disagree, they have a no hid mode, now people will start making a lot of cinematic stuff in destiny well a lot more. They are a year late with it but private matches will probably come sooner or later but why would they put that much effort into destiny right now? Throw it into destiny two so we have to buy another game for it. Think about it, if they took a lot of the bigger ideas on the forums and put them into destiny 2 more people would buy it. Just my point of view on this.

1 ReplyTime to poop on this post
bungie confirmed it was considered for destiny 2
They wouldn't consider it if Activision said no
-
Bungie introduced trials of Osiris as competitive gamemode and also put SBMM in the game (worst decision ever) They want us to sweat the whole time but no private mathes because there fun. Activision hates fun.
-
2 RepliesDestiny too imbalanced to be truly competitive. Give us private matches you fuktards!
-
2 RepliesI think its because there would be less people in all the other modes look how long it takes to find a game of salvage if its not the daily then think about that for every game of clash or control... and I think bungie was said something about "wanting players to play together not with only their friends all the time" I could be wrong but I could swear I remember hearing/reading something like this not long after the game came out...
-
5 RepliesIt'll happen but i bet D2 when last gen gets cut.
-
2 RepliesEdited by daPWNDAZ: 4/1/2016 6:05:36 PMThere wouldn't be competition. They both would receive separate attention, independent of how the other game fares. That would be like saying that Michael Bay directing the Ninja Turtle movie interferes with the Transformers franchise.
-
You forgot to mention battlefront
-
1 ReplyNext live update we will learn that private matchmaking will be activated for competitive play calling it
-
1 ReplyOn the contrary they want the game to be competitive. Once you hit the esl market it's a huge jumping off point. Esl on twitch gets donations from fanboys. People get more interested in high tier playing. Gb gets popular which will result in more streams. I do agree Activision is shot though
-
2 RepliesI didn't realize CoD was competitive.
-
2 RepliesArtificial competition makes the company win double. For example, Starbucks and Seattle's best are owned by the same company. Fake competition
-
3 RepliesThat is the worst argument I have heard in a very long time. A business purposefully sabotaging their own franchise... That's like saying Pepsi doesn't want Gatorade to be as successful as their mountain dew brand. Complete idiocy here. It would be of EVEN more benefit for the company for destiny to be at the same level as call of duty because it would create more business, more people would talk about it, more merchandise, more tournaments that people may pay to get into. So on and so forth. Not to mention that both games have expansions in between one another to make sure they don't lose profit. If COD came out the same time as destiny then yes, you could be right. Unfortunately from a business stand point they would NEVER do that. It would be a terrible decision on Activision's end. Jeez... The sewage that some people excrete from their mouth... Take a simple economics class please

2 RepliesSeems legit...
-
4 RepliesThat's just laughable. Try again.
