I remember watching the live stream as Bungie announced ToO and thinking that, besides the completly scripted looking play (no one camped a single dead enemy), that it looked like a really awesome addition.
Right up until they said they weren't going to find us teammates.
Now here we are a year later and I've finally got an opinion on Trials besides "get rid of the shit because the babies who play cry nerf over everything", because I've finally actually played Trials.
My conclusion I've come to is that it is the single biggest wasted opportunity in the game.
The thing with Trials is it's actually really fun, but the majority of the players of this game wouldn't know that because Bungie decided in their infinite wisdom to not include matchmaking. Much like not having it for raids, this meant that like the VoG, CE and KF, they were creating this content for a small minority of the player population.
I work a lot and when I play, I don't want to have to work to group up to play, I just want to play. Without that option, I've run 2 VoG, a handful of CE, no KF, nothing beyond a couple level 32 PoE and until last week no Trials.
JStevensontown lives Trials and he's playing all the time, but I never wanted to play because I didn't want to be a weak link after so long without playing it. Well he and CarnivalLaw wanted to run, so we gave it a go.
The first holy shit moment was getting the passage coin and seeing all the Trials bounties (Which led to the question, why do they steal bounty spots from normal PvP bounties for ToO occasionally?)
Then we started playing.
We lost our first match, but then won like 6 in a row before dropping 2 to end our coins (we hadn't gotten boons) and not only were the matches fun as hell, the completed bounties and post-match rewards were awesome.
In those 9 matches, I received Legendary legs, 2 Legendary gauntlets, a 308 hand cannon and probably 45 Marks and I thought, where the hell is this shit in the rest of the game?
Normal PvP bounties don't give shit except for xp that barely moves the needle on the faction rep meter that takes forever to move up a level.
Normal PvP post-match rewards are maybe a purple engram every 10 matches or so and a weapon once a month if you're lucky.
So I'm getting all these rewards for playing this fun game mode and it's suddenly no -blam!-ing wonder JS is always running it. Then Monday night JS, Draken Wolf and I ran it again.
All these -blam!-ing babies shit their pants crying over this or that is OP. We just played. We didn't check opponent classes or weapons before hand. I used a Suros Scout and a Fusion Rifle and played Striker, we had no Doctrines, TLW or anything else people cry about and we did just fine.
When we had to stop because of the time, we'd gone 5-1 and cost ourselves the one loss.
So my question on this side of the experience is more so now than ever, why don't Bungie want everyone playing this content?
IB draws players in once a month that don't play any other time. PvE events could do the same if they'd put them in the rotation. But here is something that exists every weekend that could make players log in, and there's no doubt in my mind they would if they saw how rewarding and fun it is...
And they squander it.
I know the hard core ToO crowd will cry their little eyes out
Randoms wouldn't talk

you'd get crappy teammates

randoms couldn't win

they'd give easy wins to Fireteams
Yadda -blam!-ing yadda.
Well my answer is stfu and put the health and accessibility of the game ahead of your baby-ass bullshit.
What matchmaking would do is allow anyone and everyone to try Trials. Beyond that, it would let people who don't have friends on or friends that want to PvP, to meet other players who they mesh with.
Yeah, some groupings will get slaughtered, just like some Fireteams get slaughtered. But some will also play well together and become friends and add each other to play again.
Then there's the competitive groupings.
Up until match 5 give priority to random vs random and fireteam vs fireteam. If no matches open within 45 seconds, go first available by skill level.
Shit doesn't get real in Trials until the final four matches anyway, so once you get to 5, it's strictly mm by current algorithms be it elo, coin record (currently flawless) or whatever they use.
This would not only allow players who would never LFG to play, it would prevent Fireteams steamrolling randoms because they would only face those good enough to have won five matches already.
ToO could be so much more than it is and it's sad to see such a wasted opportunity to make this game better.
So I'm asking you Bungie to really take a look at what you have and ask yourselves if the game would be better with everyone able to play it.
Then I want you to look at this great system of fun gameplay vs rewarding drops and ask yourselves why the rest of the game is nothing like it.
Normal PvP bounties are a joke. I've never unlocked Shaxx's because of the stupid quest chain to run modes I can't stand. Normal PvP rewards and rep gains are garbage. Marks are too limited with just the daily and weekly normal PvP ones and for the most part the Crucible vendor weapons are meh and post match never drop.
So that's it. I would love for others who have never tried Trials to get to experience how fun it can be, but that's up to you, Bungie.

Good post. Applies to other stuff as well as ToO. A bit that triggered my thought was that friends can often - OFTEN - be made from playing a game with randoms. Optional - Optional, remember! - Matchmaking should be available for ALL strikes and raids. The choice is then made by the player, as it should be, not by Bungie. I'd say that 90% of the players on my friends list have come from requests - both ways - after a few strikes. The other 10% come from recommendations from existing friends, almost exclusively during a raid.

I cant stand when i find a lfg team we go 8-1 then they both rage quit...? Like ok we just had 9 games to work as a team and lost one i think now that we have been playing together we can go 9-0 but nope they would rather start over fresh with more randoms.
-
I would love to try it some time, but I know I never will. I run all 3 characters to level 5 every IB, I can spend an hour or two on Oryx, but to sit threw 9 matches against trihards, or to loose because of shitty connections.......I want to break stuff when Ogres teleport or the Brand doesn't transfer, I can't imagine getting to 8-0 just to loose to lag or get dropped. I think I would explode.

I disagree with raid matchmaking. But I don't see why Trials couldn't have it. Why not?

1 ReplyI played someone with the gamertag lost sols this weekend and destroyed them

2 RepliesSols you're crying....your tears are everywhere. This is just as bad as a nerf post.

Bump again, you nailed it!

3 RepliesYou have to look at matchmaking from the other side as well. What if there was matchmaking in trials, then what? Well there are some cons to matchmaking too like; AFK players. Players quiting because they're losing. Players joining in late and getting rewards for doing nothing. Players not contributing to get easy rewards (walking around, but not helping the fight). There's just as many cons as there are pros, but you have to see if the bad out weighs the good and to be honest it does. Having a pre-made team makes things much less likely to deal with the trolls in matchmaking.
-
I've never played Trials and I probably don't plan to because I'm not a big fan of the Crucible and also none of my characters are over 300, nor am I that good at PvP to begin with
-
1 ReplyTheir should have been a optional matchmaking system from day one, or at the very least it should've been added in year two. I don't just mean for crucible, I mean for EVERYTHING! How freakin hard would it be to add a matchmaking option? "Hey this nightfall seems pretty hard this week....matchmaking on." "I don't feel like dealing with other people right now, I wanna do strikes by myself....matchmaking off." Same goes for raids and ToO, why this hasn't been done yet is beyond me, I guess my feeble brain don't think good like bungie do.

Edited by EVIL VENOM: 3/20/2016 10:46:19 PMWhat don't get Sols is that Iron Banner has match making and your playing with randoms which makes it tough sometimes, but it's still doable. Trials of Osiris also is light level based match, it fact it's just like elimination (without light level) and has match making(but again iron banner has match making) wtf? I don't get why trials don't have match making. I wish someone at Bungie could explain this contradiction. BUMP!

1 ReplyGreat points about ToO. How or why Bungie cannot implement an OPTIONAL matchmaking system for all activities is really confusing. Plenty of other games requiring teamwork have OPTIONAL matchmaking and/or in game party finders. Guess what Bungie? IT WORKS!!! It encourages EVERYONE who plays the game to at the very least ATTEMPT every activity. It's just plain stupid to not have an OPTIONAL matchmaking system.

Maybe tiered trials? Those that are the elites play in a grouping that PROMOTES continued play. For example multiple trips to the lighthouse, guaranteed trials drops first run. Each additional run afterwards chance at exotics or very high light level gear/weapons. Those that are in the lower tier can only go to the lighthouse once in that tier, if they wish to continue attempts, they can but without going to lighthouse. If they wish to go again to the lighthouse, they have to join the top tier group and attempt there. I think this could promote a better experience for everyone. Keep in mind lower tier rewards can drop with a MAX light of 295-310, top tier drops are 315- 320. Top tier return visits light drops would be 305-315. Lastly, scarab emblems- only earned in top tier consecutive runs. I think this could really open the doors to groups that have stayed away from trials and give a new challenge to top tier players.

I played ToO in year 1 and a little in year 2 but when all of my friends quit playing because BO3 released, I had no more friends to run any content that required a fire team. I have used the LFG on the app before but I will never use any LFG outside the game anymore because that function should be inside the game. If Bungie would add optional mm to everything in the game, I would play it more than once a month which is only for Iron Banner.
-
I agree with what u say. However why shoudnt normal crucible activities, lord shaxx bounties give good rewards. Why should it be tied to only toO. Every activity in the crucible should give good rewards. Why should u be forced to play trials to get good rewards.

7 RepliesI think it's pretty clear that there are two fundamental reasons Bungie will never offer matchmaking for trials, and this is just my own assessment, feel free to disagree. 1. Fear that fireteams would have too easy a time of it and thereby go flawless more often. Why is this of concern to them? End game gear and the pursuit thereof keeps their client base grinding. The more lighthouse runs the quicker you reach max level and collect all the weapons. Easier matches mean less time spent grinding and the potential for play time to drop off. Now, here's the irony. ToO is actually REALLY fun! I play it over other game modes because I truly enjoy the pace and strategy. Bungie has so little faith in the content they've created that they think the lighthouse rewards/max level is all that's keeping players engaged in ToO each weekend. They're dead wrong once again. 2. It's been made clear to anyone paying attention that it's Bungie's fundamental philosophy that, like big government, only they know what we truly want and need. There are countless examples in the past year and a half of how they feel compelled to dictate how we ought to be experiencing their content. Matchmaking in ToO is just the current example. They don't believe in a player's intelligence or ability to decide what's fun for them and what's not, rather they feel it's their duty to tell us what we ought to like and dislike. Is this their prerogative as the maker? Yes, yes it is. That fact in no way detracts from the truth of my observation. Bungie needs to recognize that not everyone is an aspiring MLG player and that there are literally thousands of casual players online every day looking to do ToO. These players should have the option to go into a matchmaking lobby. The downside for them would be that they'd more than likely be at a disadvantage against coordinated fireteams. But that's their choice. Can I use Recruitment or LFG? Yup, and I do every weekend. Again, that fact doesn't negate the logic behind optional matchmaking. To borrow from Deej... "Your move, Bungie"

17 RepliesI think trials is the last game activity that would need matchmaking. Since it is competitive like a tournament, it makes sense to not have it. It would be nice to see a halo type system with matchmaking on other activities where the whole team can vote to boot a player and if half of the team votes then the player gets removed.
-
3 RepliesIt would be to easy. Pre made teams always have an advantage wether you found them on lfg or were best buds in real life. Trials is supposed to be hard. I hate that people get carried to the lighthouse. Matchmaking would be to specific as well. Same number of wins and boons would need to be taken into account so people wouldn't screw other people by being inept. As a casual pvp/avid trials player matchmaking would ruin the experience.
-
18 Replieseverytime i see someone ask for matchmaking...i wonder why they can't make friends really isn't that hard and a lot of you guys could stand to work on your social skills
-
13 RepliesPerfectly well said. Gating people off from content they freaking paid for and then expecting them to use a third party website is ridiculous in every way. And no one can come up with a viable reason why it shouldn't be in this game. No one. I've been waving this flag since day one, its such a basic concept. And it doesn't effect the super elite mlg pros who have their super teams they can always raid and run with. Don't want to use it? DONT! It has no effect on your game play. Some people need it (myself and it sounds like you as well). Good post bro, mega bump

4 RepliesHaving played the Division you can see how bad a decision it was for Bungie NOT to include optional match making for all the content. I had no issues being kicked if I was constantly dying. It meant I need to level up my gear. And some of the challenges were much easier in groups and it was so simple to match up. Even without using a mic the entire time I played I had no issues. It's time Bungie. OMM for ALL!
-
2 RepliesI've utilized matchmaker in the division several times. As long as the players have microphones we can communicate in game chat. You can get matched with bad players, or players just not ready for challenging mode but it isn't always the case. Finding people to play with in the division can take a few minutes. Finding people to play trials or raids with utilizing LFGs can take hours.
-
24 RepliesBro we agree on most things but not this... I respect your opinion but I have played a lot of trials... And matchmade elimination. Based on my experience matchmade trials teams would get absolutely slaughtered. It would be very frustrating.

1 ReplyEdited by gallp13: 3/20/2016 7:32:09 AMBump Have a life wife son parents siblings nephews nieces in laws, four businesses, travel heaps, sit on 6 boards, surf, snowboard, fence, play guitar (poorly) and play Destiny (which me and my wife love). Don't have time to arrange teams - gimme OMM and gimme NOW Hey works for the millennials ...... ok ...... Pleeeeeeeez ;)

1 ReplyEdited by Killlerschaf: 3/20/2016 11:59:46 AMLong post! Partly interesting read :P I'll actually say the following: Trials needs to be replaced because it's a broken end game activity. But then again, I don't like Trials as Destiny simply isn't a competitive game with the infrastructure in place to demand hyper competitive play (extremely unbalanced, no dedicated severs, rotating meta). If I want to play a sweaty game, I'll play Halo not Trials.
-
6 RepliesMatchmaking would make for so many easy steamrolls for good teams. That's the be all and end all of it.
