Open Carry or Concealed Carry

I usually Open Carry.

87

I usually Concealed Carry by choice.

266

I Concealed Carry, it's the only choice.

75

I'm not allowed to carry a firearm.

499

I don't want to carry a firearm.

356

I have started carrying open since it became legal in Texas. It seems that no one is upset about it in Texas. Also, there have been no shootouts because of the law. I started open carrying as an experiment. I was interested in the reactions of others, and intended to continue carrying concealed. My expectation was that there would be some raised eyebrows, perhaps a comment, or even a request to leave a business. My experience was that no one, not one single person, in 2.5 months, was concerned that I was open carrying. Given those results, I intend to continue open carrying, where legal. Open carrying is more comfortable and the weapon is more accessible. My holster has two retention mechanisms and the pistol cannot be drawn by someone behind me. The numbers seem pretty stable now. I am surprised at the 34% who carry by choice. I expected a smaller number, maybe 5% to 7%. It's comforting to know we have many sheepdogs out there. I'm impressed at the 7% who carry open. I have only seen one other person open carrying. I expected 1% to be open carrying. The 28% who have no desire to carry is what I expected somewhere between a quarter and a third. I'm sad to see that 39% of respondents don't even have a choice. I might do another poll to determine the state or country of residence. I know a few of the 39% were too young to carry, but I'm not sure how many cannot carry due to legal disqualifications. In the U.S., all but 11 states, districts, and territories are Constitutional Carry or Shall Issue. As long as the applicant is not disqualified by a criminal history or psychological condition, they will be able to carry. The other 11 states or territories are May Issue. The application may be denied at the discretion of the government. They usually do not consider self protection a valid reason to need a carry license. Edit: Went to Dallas County Tax Office to get new tags for my motorcycle. Open carried, no issues. Edit: I Open carried at church today. I only had three comments. The Pastor and one member asked what kind of holster I had. It is a De Santis http://THUMB-BREAK-SCABBARD. A mentally challenged young lady said, "I won't make you angry." I told her that she never made me angry, and that I would not hurt her, but would protect her. She seemed happy with that.

  • I live in a country that has neither and a gun death rate 0.3% of that in America (0.01 homicides by firearm per 100,000 population vs. 3.2 in America).

        • I think it would depend on where you live. Given Texas' reputation, at least in the north east, this does not surprise me. However, while I do not know the laws in my state, I am perfectly fine with people having guns. I wish they could implement some kind of mandatory training and certifications in all states, plus require re-certifications every x years. Just because you have a gun does not mean you know how to use it or remember their gun safety. A car I feel is just as, in not less, dangerous than gun and you cannot use that without a license and training. I have fired a low cal rifle before as well as a lower cal shogun. I enjoyed it. I probably would not carry one anywhere but to a range, but that is me.

              • Concealed is the way to go. Lots of people get concerned seeing an open firearm. It's been to conceal it so people don't get freaked out, and you still have it in the unfortunate event you do need it.

                    • Did you know West Virginia just passed a law where citizens can conceal a weapon without a permit. I'm all for guns but I think that WV already has too many hicks. I used to live there in college and let me tell you. The people of WV need to be put down. Every one of those proud proud west Virginians are idiots. Give a fresh 21 year old a gun without the need for a conceal permit and he will walk around tall and proud till he thinks he can shoot someone who gives him the wrong look. BTW WV IS A VERY RACIST AND LARGLY WHITE POPULATION.

                          • Here's my opinion on open carry. It's the most ignorant decision our Government has made since legalizing assault rifles. Let me tell you why. If a man/woman walks into a store carrying a baby. Who's to stop someone from snatching that weapon. In order for that to happen they would have to toss that baby to the side, then what? Get charged with child abuse, lose your child and possible not even stop the assailant from getting said weapon and killing people. I'm just using this as an example. Their are crazy ass people in this country and the guns laws allow these things to happen.

                            • Concealed Carry. Because if someone tries to rob a store you're in, and you are visibly carrying a gun, you're the first one getting shot/hit

                              • I stopped a guy from shooting up an SUV with a family inside it. I was working at a rest stop at the time and had gone outside to fix one of the fuel pumps. While I'm working on the pump, there's an SUV parked next to me with a woman and a little kid in it. I suddenly hear two guys loudly arguing. One is the driver, the other is some guy in a truck parked in front of the store. The truck starts to drive away then suddenly stops and the guy gets out yelling at the driver and holding something behind his back. I'm stuck directly in the middle of them! I have no idea what he has, but I'm going to assume it's a gun so I lift my shirt, grab my pistol (don't draw just hold it so he KNOWS what I have) and tell him to leave. After a couple of minutes he gets back in his truck and leaves. I call the police, tell them what happened and give them his plate number. They pull him over down the road and find a gun in the seat next to him. Every time I put my weapon on, I hope I don't have to use it but I always remember that I could get stuck in the middle of someone else's big dick contest.

                                • I don't own a gun. I live in NY so it's basically impossible. I would like to own one though. I don't see the point of concealed carry. If you have a gun on you, it seems to me like a good idea for the public to know. Presumably you will only use it lawfully. It would also serve as a deterrent from some wacko who wants to go on a shooting spree.

                                  • It's kind of funny. In Texas it's usually an awful idea to pull out a public shooting. Considering that about 60% of people carry, concealed or not. You'd get filled with bullets before someone can say "someone call 911!"

But I believe there's a difference between just having a firearm safely at your side and having a rifle dangling at your hip cause you're wearing the strap like a fashionable purse rather than a gun. You know what I mean?
