Discrimination Against "Poor" Internet Users... Code-Name: Damage Referee

This has got to be one of the most baleful lines ever spoken from you Bungie!
Paul: If your connection is bad, we'll be giving you even more reasons to improve it.
Do you honestly think I can tell my router to go faster? Perhaps start my own internet service that's fiber inducing? Or go talk to the big companies and ask very nicely if they could help in my plight? Unfortunately there are many of us gamers who aren't as privileged compared to those with optimal connections and there is little to no chance we can really do anything about it and now you're threatening us?! As a person who has "lesser" internet I can honestly say that whenever I've had a red bar, or even green a green bar, I've never felt like I had the advantage; in fact, the clear opposite happens to me. I get shot through corners, witnessed teleporting sparrows during SRL, you get the picture - it's frustrating! I understand that something needs to be done to those who purposely tamper with their connections, but to punish those who are trying to play legit is wrong; you're literally pulling an Ebenezer and it's so baffling. If you're that inclined to only want people who have privileged internet then you should have only sold the game to those people because apparently my money isn't good enough for you. Believe me when I say I would LOVE to have the most up to date internet, but with the way service provider companies currently are, it will never happen because they're not going to go out of their way to help little me who wants to play games online or whatever. So, if you want your paying customers to be able to play your game without connection headaches then you need not to tell us about how bad our internet is, but to the companies who are holding your people back. EDIT: "Poor" internet means not that great internet service - not money!

  • Ive said it before, and I'll say it sgain. If you know your car can only go 25, would you still drive on the freeway? Especially knowing that you're making other people miserable?

    • Networking is complicated... First off, speed/bandwidth is not necessarily correlated with latency/jitter. Latency is governed, at its core, by the # of network hops the packets have to take. If any of those happen to be satellite-based, forget it, you'll have really poor ping. After that, there's jitter, which is the variation in ping, as well as lost packets. Almost anything between you and the endpoint contributes to this. A huge possibility is EMI (interference) of a console's WiFi connection. I have seen this personally with my laptop. I visited someone who lives in a complex and tried to play an MMO. My normally great connection sputtered, and I had pings that varied all over the place, and disconnects. I switched to a wire... Problem solved. Other things that can contribute are poor connections in the wiring, bad routers, router bugs (Google for "bufferbloat" a somewhat newly recognized problem), and then all sorts of things outside of your control at your ISP and the backbone providers, etc. So first thing... Forget speedtest.net, instead use pingtest.net. For the amount of data games use, bandwidth is almost never important. I bet you could play Destiny quite well over DSL (except for downloading updates!). It's ping, jitter, and packet loss you need to worry about.

    • I'm a little disappointed at how dismissive the majority of this community is to those who don't have access to decent internet. I understand that those fortunate enough to have a good ISP have been dealing with the lag issues, but to simply dismiss your fellow players saying things like, "Get better internet jack azz" or "I don't feel bad for you, at all" is sort of fücked up. If you were to place yourselves in that situation, you wouldn't want to hear that shít either. I just don't get why this community is so toxic towards one another. For the record, living on a US military installations, I'm one of the unfortunate ones to not have a good internet provider.

    • You are the minority and won't be missed. We'll welcome you back with open arms when your connection is brought up to Destiny's required speed. We had to put up with all your shannigans for long enough and it's a good day to hear that Bungie relieved us from it all.

    •
Do you honestly think I can tell my router yo go faster?
In many cases...yes. There are steps that can be taken to make your gaming experience better on both consoles. These include: 1. Hardwiring your connection 2. Port forwarding 3. Adjusting mtu size 4. QoS settings There are probably some others as well. With a little research you may have a more stable connection and thus a better gaming experience for little to no cost.

    • Black ops 3 and FFXIV, I don't lag in either of these with my crapy DSL, i don't even lag on any steam games on PC! In destiny I lag like hell, all I have to do is stand in the tower and I get a red bar, forget PvP, this tells me it's on Bungie/Activisions end, not ours!

      • I literally can't get better internet in my area and I still get lag way more in destiny then any other game. And don't give me some shit about how if I live in a rural area with bad internet it's my own fault. I live in a city. It's so dumb that destiny went cheap with their multiplayer and servers, and then they punish players.

        • This is just pissing me off all around. I have decent Internet. Usually no lag, however if my brother comes over and starts downloading or someone else in the house starts watching a lot of videos and stuff, I will lag like hell. Since I'm pinging off WiFi I'm not set to "priority" so the main computer takes the internet before mine. I can have a good connection and good game, but as soon as someone uses inet, I'll go to shit, and so will my game. They need to fix the lagers yes, but not by making the legit have to pay by things they can't fix. So telling us to "fix our connection" isn't doing you any good.

          • I used to have 3mbps internet and usually had about 35 ping but i still lagged hard when I played Destiny. Almost always red barred, so I quit. Other games didnt give me that. Now i have ~50 mbps d/l and 12-15 ping but I haven't played Destiny with my new internet. Although download speed CAN have an effect on ping, ping is the reason for latency, or lag.

          • You're wrong. Lots of people have slow Internet speeds...DSL is rural areas, mountain people, people on islands, etc. They are talking about bad PING, packet loss, poor stability. You can have 2/1mb Internet and still play fine as long as your connection is "stable".

          • Well in my opinion. And I have fi-optics, that it's BUNGIES duty to have dedicated servers with a game such as this. Not its players duty to get better internet they may not have access too.

            • I can't wait. We went up against red bars in trials yesterday who were glitching all over the shop. You'd kill one with a headshot snipe and there'd be a 4 sec delay before they died. They then had the audacity to teabag and message us telling us to get good when they won. I'm going to laugh when turds like these cry that their potato internet isn't an advantage for them anymore.

            • Actually fixing an issue where lagging assists you is not the problem. The problem is being red bar should not benefit people playing in the crucible. The damage referee is just correcting an issue.

            • With peer to peer there will always be lag. It's not rocket science, dedicated servers is the only cure.

            • Put all the laggers together = problem solved You want to get out of Lagsville, pay more per month for your service, get the best router you can afford, and hardline to your console.

Do people not realise that you can actually ask your ISP to put you on a "gaming" profile..... Results in slightly lower speeds but far less latency (more consistent connection) and lower ping. Try calling them and asking. I know for a fact that in the uk Virgin and sky and BT all offer this.... You just gotta ask.

              • In every other game that requires internet connection, if you have poor connection then you will not do good but in Destiny, red bars are at the top of leader boards, because you can swap but even if you get the first shot theyll probably kill you
