What D1 players mean when they say D1 was better

1) better tower, better layout, vanguard together in one space, more vendors... also more public spaces. Iron Temple and Reef 2) blues can decrypt to legendary or exotic, motes of light or strange coins, legendaries can decrypt to exotics 3) rank up packages from Vanguard and factions let you choose your reward and were more rewarding. 4) Armsday weapon orders and field test weapons that led to quests for wespons like Tlaloc, Stillpiercer, Immobius etc 5) Infusion cost was reasonable (you could also infuse a Hunter Helmet unto a Warlock helmet etc) 6) vendor weapons from factions, Vanguard, and crucible https://youtu.be/DffcfbFhNf0 7) weapons had amazing detail and fit the theme of the raids better https://youtu.be/90uc9WWGOG0 8) armor was fantastic, especially after Age of Triumphs https://youtu.be/Tn_xulF29TE 9) raid armor and weapons had intrinsic perks that helped you during the raid, no mods required 10) better story telling (more story during game play) I dont want to read lore to get the story D1 provided. https://youtu.be/Uw1MtF6QqEQ 11) public events were fun and rewarding https://youtu.be/o3D6kZuo8x8 12) SRL https://youtu.be/7wPbqSDF24U 13) more / better pvp maps (how many are in D2 now?) https://youtu.be/SwNDLSNeeew 14) replayable campaign and story missions right from the directory (all of them) Weekly heroic story missions 15) favorite shader system https://youtu.be/83s2PMMhkdc 16) all old raids were revised and made relevant. New armor and ornaments to chase and Exotic Adept raid weapons. https://youtu.be/xwPXNXhEcaw 17) artifacts were introduced to help you customize your loadout, not to make you bounty grind to unlock mods and power level needed to play the DLC content. https://youtu.be/CGV9KLgxnPg 18) subclasses were way more customizable 19) you could pledge to a faction of your choice and receive rank up packages including sparrows, ships, ghosts, armor and weapons. 20) can't forget about Exotic Class Items. The class items increased reputation gains for the faction you pledged to, also since they were neutral you could still use you favorite exotic armor and equip an exotic class item. https://youtu.be/ybiPes9byzE EDIT: if I am wrong then why has so much of D1 been ported into D2? These are my opinions and they are subjective. Feel free to chime in with your thoughts and discuss what you like better. D2 has plenty of advantages but I still like D1 better overall. • I'm gonna compare D1 to D2 destiny 1 had better shaders while destiny 2 now has inf ammo on grey weapons which I like, dislike too much grinding from D2 another thing is D2 is defo more cash grabby which I dislike I understand for the DLCs tho, but DLCs need more content destiny 2 has no real story now since the removal of red army campaign, destiny 2 has bad amour designs while destiny 1 is so much better in that area. Destiny 1 was easier to get exotics. I think overall Destiny 1 is better than Destiny 2 because cade six is still alive as well killing cade six was a mistake that really brough down destiny 2

  • Yh I hear that bungie has took a lot of things from the game like the armour aesthetics and amour specific raids or nightfalls like in d1 which everyone misses and have asked to be put back in d2

I forgot about ordering weapons and those being the weapons you calibrate. That was better than just holding on to a bunch of weapons I hate using just on the chance that a bounty comes out. I wish I could still play d1 a little. But my old consoles are bunk. Not much content left to explore when I left it anyway. But walking around the tower again would be nice. EDIT: holy -blam!-, do you remember Dinklebot? I miss him.
1) better tower, better layout, vanguard together in one space, more vendors... also more public spaces. Iron Temple and Reef
Subjective. More public spaces isn't really needed. Fail to see how that made D1 a better game
2) blues can decrypt to legendary or exotic, motes of light or strange coins, legendaries can decrypt to exotics
You get legendaries left and right, exotics are also really common too if you're doing anything remotely endgame. Access to economy materials is also really easy. I don't remember a single time having a blue glove decrypting into a strange coin and thinking "wow this is an incredible feature"
3) rank up packages from Vanguard and factions let you choose your reward and were more rewarding.
Being able to filter rewards was nice, but rank up packages were far from more rewarding, they gave you the same thing as you get now plus motes of light, which only existed to upgrade weapons.
4) Armsday weapon orders and field test weapons that led to quests for wespons like Tlaloc, Stillpiercer, Immobius etc
Armsday was nice, not really make or break, however I fail to see how the class specific weapon quests being started through it made the game better. Doesn't really matter HOW the quest starts, just that it starts. Getting a quest from a vendor is what we already do.
5) Infusion cost was reasonable (you could also infuse a Hunter Helmet unto a Warlock helmet etc)
Infusion still is reasonable. Like 10,000 glimmer and like what, 10 legendary shards?
6) vendor weapons from factions, Vanguard, and crucible https://youtu.be/DffcfbFhNf0
We still have those...
7) weapons had amazing detail and fit the theme of the raids better https://youtu.be/90uc9WWGOG0
Detail? They're still detailed, also they still fit the theme of raids closely? Have you played any of the D2 raids lmao?
8) armor was fantastic, especially after Age of Triumphs https://youtu.be/Tn_xulF29TE
In what way? Appearance is subjective, if we're talking stats, mod 2.0 blows D1 out of the water.
9) raid armor and weapons had intrinsic perks that helped you during the raid, no mods required
And they were almost always worthless. The only decent one was the KF and WoTM weapon perks, and even then a 10% increase to damage wasn't really something to write home about.
10) better story telling (more story during game play) I dont want to read lore to get the story D1 provided. https://youtu.be/Uw1MtF6QqEQ
Did we play the same game? There's undeniably more story in missions in D2. The biggest criticism of D1 was grimoire.
11) public events were fun and rewarding https://youtu.be/o3D6kZuo8x8
What? I don't even understand how you can think that. Rewards were shit for public events just as they are now, a blue, destination materials, and maybe a mote. I also don't understand how you could find D1 public events to be better than D2 when we have heroic public events.
12) SRL https://youtu.be/7wPbqSDF24U
SRL was fun, doesn't make the game better as a whole though.
13) more / better pvp maps (how many are in D2 now?)
More? Yes. Better? Debatable, I prefer most of the D2 maps.
14) replayable campaign and story missions right from the directory (all of them) Weekly heroic story missions
Hardly a benefit, everyone ragged on the story in D1 just as they did in D2. Replayable story missions doesn't make the game better lmao.
15) favorite shader system https://youtu.be/83s2PMMhkdc
D1 shader system was ASS, you got no choice in customization, the shader applied to every piece of armor and that's it, in D2 I can apply a shader to individual pieces to get a better look and weapons are capable of having shaders applied, unlike D1.
16) all old raids were revised and made relevant. New armor and ornaments to chase and Exotic Adept raid weapons.
Made relevant at the end of the games life, keep in mind AoT was a few months before D2, they had no plans to bring them back to relevancy otherwise. There was no new armor, only ornaments. The adept raid weapons were literally just the regular primary weapons but with an element on them and a set roll.
17) artifacts were introduced to help you customize your loadout, not to make you bounty grind to unlock mods and power level needed to play the DLC content.
1. You don't need artifact levels for DLC content and you only need 10 which you'll get by finishing the season pass anyway to do some endgame content like GM nightfalls, artifacts in D2 also allow you to customize your loadout, that's what the whole seasonal mod thing is. [Quote18) subclasses were way more customizable
Old subclass system was nice on paper, not great when it came to actual builds and synergy. It should come back, but the D1 version wasn't really the best.
19) you could pledge to a faction of your choice and receive rank up packages including sparrows, ships, ghosts, armor and weapons.
Factions didn't really add anything in D1, they really just functioned as a way to get some legendaries and to dump your motes of light, hell, half the time I forgot I was even pledged to a faction. Having them or not, didn't make a difference.
20) can't forget about Exotic Class Items. The class items increased reputation gains for the faction you pledged to, also since they were neutral you could still use you favorite exotic armor and equip an exotic class item. https://youtu.be/ybiPes9byzE
Reference my previous point. Overall, none of these things made D1 better. Sincerely, someone with 3,000+ hours in D1, the game which actually got me into games, but also not blinded by nostalgia.

I stopped playing D2, went back to D1 and I haven't regretted it since. D2 was a chore, I had to try to get myself to want to play it, I wanted to enjoy D2 and keep playing it but what Bungie have done with it has killed the enjoyment for me.
Don't get me wrong, there are a few good changes in D2, like being able to choose all four emotes and being able to put shaders on weapons. I also liked the new customisation menu they put in at the start of season 14. Bows were a nice addition too, I was sceptical at first but it didn't take me long to always have a bow equipped.
With D1 not only do I enjoy it, I also don't miss any of the changes that they've made in D2, for example I find that I don't need/miss ledge grab in D1.
Call me delusional or say I have rose tinted glasses but I find D1 fun whether I'm by myself or with friends, I can't say the same for D2. I just hope that when the day comes to shut down the servers - Bungie releases an update that gives you an option to download your character data and make it so you can play it offline or in a LAN party...
Great post NVMYGT, I completely agree with everything you listed, it's a shame D2 went down the route it has, it had a lot of potential. I haven't looked at any of the videos you linked but I'll be sure to come back and check them out! :)
Bungie needs more people like you working for them.
• I guess I like the armor more in D1 even tho I still find it mostly bland at best. I wish zhalo would make its return, the iron sight and recoil is amazing.

        • The core game was better on the console. Movement, shooting, etc. was better. D1 got fewer updates but they were much larger. The game was more about creating an interesting world to explore, rather than micro-transactions. PVP was better, guns were more crispt. You could use most exotics. I logged on to play end game compared to now where I mostly log in to check the store. I used to do everything and now I just do bounties. I wish they would have kept having dlcs ov D1. There was passion for the game and working with friends to get through the hardest content.

                • To answer your "EDIT" and to add point 21: Activisions studios. Those 2 studios and the publisher themselves helped this game being a top tier triple A title. Without that budget, Destiny has turned into a terrible live support free to play cash cow. Quantity and hamster wheel grind with reissues over quality that we once had.

I have to agree D1 was better and I'm not saying that with a haze of nastalgia. Your points are spot on. One thing I used to like was levelling up weapons. It was such a simple thing but unlocking perks through using my weapon made it feel more mine. Such a simple thing but I think it made a big difference to the feel of your weapon. Stikes as well were fun to run, atmospheric and rewarding with thier own loot. Armors, in general, were much better and cooler. Remeber the chroma system? Now that's a paid system in D2 - so lame. That's not to say D1 wasn't without issue. Of course it was, loads of them. But by the end, many of those were corrected. Many things had been honed over time and were enjoyable and fun to use. D2 threw almost every piece of learning from D1 out the window and has been trying to recreate itself ever since. To think what D1 was and now we have this F2P fuelled Eververse simulator with seasonal content excreted out full of copy and paste mechanics and re-skinned content. Such a waste. The worst thing about it all though, Bungie clearly don't care because they are absolutely raking it in with D2. If they could manage it I'd bet there'd be a mobile version in the works.

                    • Options will vary about both games, but a couple of major things that stick out the most between the 2 games is that D1 was designed a hell of a lot better, the game moved forward, and it had a lot more incentive to run activities. D2 was a major mess when it was released for being a sequel that still to this day I can't for the life of me think how Bungie thought in their minds making a game literally barebone after working on D1 was a "good thing". It took until Forsaken the only time in D2 existence that the game was in a good place. Soon right after that things went back to the way they were which is mindboggling considering they have had 14 years. 4 years later in D2 and the game is still struggling becase Bungie doesn't know how to be consistent. The one thing that made D1 what it was for its time.

D1 and D2 is the perfect example of bigger isn't always better. D2 has changed so many times idek wtf it is anymore. Beta was like halo reach and gold comp overwatch, then it was like cod bo4, and now I guess it's sort of like D1? Half the new characters are annoying, ALL the armor is ugly or obnoxious, and the game is still brain dead easy. D2 just feels so childish there's all these bright colors, trading in tokens 😂😂 it's pretty dumb like the og destiny vibe is just gone Still tons of useless exotics, the perk trees are gone like what? Idk man idk how people enjoyed D2 after having played d1 it's like comparing starwars episode 8 to the rest of the series. It used to be if you wanted the coolest looking or best gear you had to go flawless or do a raid or something now it's just handed/sold to you. The only thing I can think of that's straight up better than D1 is some customization which was probably put off just so bungie can put it in D2 lol

                        • THE RAIDS! All better, and the Age of Triumph where we could play them all for new armour/ornaments was incredible and should have lasted longer. If I could go back I'd go right back to Day 1 and play it all again for 3 years...but I'd play it more than I did when I was new to consoles/FPS/everything
