Skill based match making isnt very skill based

Title. Because im “good” I generally get placed with “worse” players and against generally decent or average players. Matches always feel skewed and having any decent stats feels like a detriment to the fun factor in most games

    • For some reason, I have been on the ultimate losing streak recently. I was in Survival, hit Fabled 3 and from then I've lost almost every single Crucible match.

    • This has been ruining my life in Crucible. I love PvP in this game but I can never really enjoy it since I'm always playing with Boat Anchors around my ankles. I make great plays but my teammates get farmed and end up losing more matches bc the team has more average players and I'm supposed to offset that by sweating my ass off. Last night I didn't have one single game where I wasnt top of my team which makes me think. Why am I never put in a teammates better than me? Even in classic mix where it's supposed to be "connection based".

    • Sbmm doesn’t work they need to remove it. it gives me average joes (1.2 kd - 1.8 kd) against basement dwellers leaderboard players in their moms basement like I play against the same guys it’s like they don’t leave to go outside.

      • Check your stats on DestinyTracker. I did this recently and found I was in top 3.4% Elo for Control, which...I didn't expect. But looking into it, and my game sense, and how I play, high chances are, you're actually better than you think. Also, the issue your describing is debatable. Should it be "Real SBMM" where you sit in queue until 12 players of the same Elo are in a match? Ehhhhh. Maybe not, cos there's not much need for it. There's no real stake, just shoot the guys. The game probably does try to match people roughly equal to you, but to avoid sitting in 10 minute queues, it's gonna shortcut some stuff, Put you again a team with a 3 stack, put a few less skilled players in your team ect. This isn't new either, and its kind of a unsolvable issue. People are WAY worse at games than you might think. Look at achievement data on any game, and it becomes clear how few people actually get deep into it. Online games are just the same.

      • I saw a video last week from a certain streamer who was showing some match results and was complaining about the same thing. To paraphrase his argument: "There's no SBMM in Classic Mix but they do use team balancing and I'm so damn good that I have to carry these potatoes against above average opponents." And of course, there goes my name right on the screen as one of his potatoes. I've been immortalized as a streamer's potato.

          • Thank you! I'm by no means a top tier player (finished about 2300 the last few seasons), and yet in the "skill based" matchmaking playlists, I'm constantly going up against Legends and Unbrokens. I know for a fact I'm not that good, as is evidenced by how those games go. How is that considered acceptable?

          • Hard to balance skill when loadouts are random. Constant Z factor. Not to mention, barely any PVP players at a given time. Less so competitive. Hard to make it fair with less people in a pool.

          • Yup when your great they don't match you in a lobby full of great players. They match you in a lobby with potatoes on your team against good players and call it skill based.

            • Been playing a lot of comp the last week or so. The one thing I saw in the solo playlist was that all it took was one good player to throw the entire lobby off. The team with the good player would often follow that player and would shred through the opposing team. The only suggestion I would make would be to ensure that 2 good players are always in the lobby and on opposite teams. No more no less. But this would be after 2100 and would go up to 4500. At 4500 all players should be close enough that the skill gap would be minimal.

            • What you're describing happens a lot it seems. But in a way that is probably working as intended by putting a higher skilled player on a team of lesser skilled team mates. To go against a team of average skilled players. My guess is they think it looks good on paper, but the reality is usually different. I've been on all ends of the MM beast and one thing I know to be true is this, it's rarely ever fair across all aspects of a given match. If you find yourself in a lobby with close scores AND no perceivable lag/ hit registration latency...stay in there because they're going to be your best games of the day. Nearly every other match is hampered by some form of undesirable variable.

            • First if you have hit 5500 you are in the top 2% (my guess) of the destiny population so you have seen this....... The new SBMM system lets you get to 3000 faster if your good. The matchs can be a little wonky but over all they are ok. At 4500 weird things start to happen. I was matched often with people who for the life of me I have no idea how they got to 4500 or they were just screwing around because they did a lot of stupid things and we lost a lot. At 5200 that non-sense ended and it was a sweaty grind but the charlatans were gone and matchmaking seemed to work. We were all pretty much evenly matched. So over all the SBMM has its warts and can be fixed but its a lot better than what we had...in comp at least. I'm not sure why anyone would wory about match making in 6v6. Its CBMM and not to be taken too serious. You don't lose anything if you lose and I have had my butt kicked in some matches and did the kicking in others. That is what happens in CBMM.

                • This is a garbage take. 1) if you were "good" and good enough to be the best player in the lobby (you're not). Everyone else would be letter skill than you. 2) sbmm is loose AF vs older destiny skill mm. Teams are more balanced than last year, but the game isn't micro managing matchups to the degree you think or claim. 3) do any of y'all who claim to be "good" ever stop complaining about every single thing in the game that doesn't let you just have free kills? 4) don't answer that, everyone knows the answer is no. 5) link your games

                    • I'm currently stuck between 4000/5000 glory the skill level as definitely gone up. I got to around 4700 then I've been up and down like a yo-yo. Some days it's definitely my fault on the losses, bad days good days, consistency is has hard as bungie making content.

                      • My first comp game this season was against 3 legends, i get paired with unbrokens alot. Not a fan, i mean im sweaty, and im above average, but i know im not too tier, i enjoy crucible, i play plenty, but holy what a crapstick of a show comp was. If im getting paired with nf users out the gate either bungie is overestimating me or sbmm is not working as intended. Then again ive seen some funky stuff, the other day i had someone who was so laggy their arc soul was firing in the air while they werent there. Par for the course and i know it wasn't me because same team another guy same fireteam faced off with me shot for shot, hit him 3 for 3 with nf but his health was full till the last shot then he just died, while i was taking dmg from his vigilance wing the while time. So my dmg was happening in live time, him taking damage was very delayed.

                      • Win% and Elo seems to be the factor. I tend to have a higher win%(because I actually play the objective...) but after these changes I feel like I'm in a horrible position cause it feels I'm being paired against higher skill people and having the more average on my side and getting dicked-on regularly. frigging ran comp for glory for the randy's questline and in the beginning ranks I ended up with a 12 loss streak where I was just trying to keep my head above water. I don't know how the matchmaking pairs people together but this season it felt like they seriously had something in their equation very wrong. I have some friends who are real potatoes when it comes to PvP and they said their comp was pretty much a breeze and took them no time at all to reach fabled. Clearly there is an issue here. I'm not saying I'm a good player bet when the people who can't hit consistent headshot have a breeze in comp and a med-tier player constantly feels like the highest skilled member of his team against a group of much sweatier players in the majority of their games. Do I just need to intentionally throw matches and trash my k/d just so I can get paired with people closer to my skill level?
