The actual registration of the sword hit is RNG, just keep hitting him until it drops.

I'm fairly certain it's bugged. I've been hitting the boss with all different attacks with the sword across three different farming runs and not gotten anything. How long is it supposed to take?

It took me 6 tries on 1 boss to get one, the others were pretty quick.
