The Nope Heard Round the World

This week Pro Yunk and Justin Giver join the DTC to talk some Destiny. The forums have been lit up the last week over the revelation that our guardians will not be speaking in D2. Whichever side of the debate you fall on, we discuss the issue as well as how much backlash was a result of Luke Smith's flippant "yup'' and ''nope'' responses. We also discuss the "ask Bungie anything?" on IGN and whether Bungie made a mistake in how it was handled. Should the devs have been here on the bungie.net forums answering questions as well as follow-ups, rather than answering 10-12 cherry picked questions on IGN? And should Luke Smith continue to be the one giving interviews if he isn't going to be remotely aware of the audience he's speaking too? Last but not least we talk about the idea of a dedicated shooting range on the Farm and how it could impact play. If you'd like to join a future episode, pm and let us know :)

Downloadable Audio links: SoundCloud https://soundcloud.com/oceans-of-canopy/episode-57 iTunes https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/destinytruthcast-destiny-podcast/id1101605804?mt=2

• It's not great for optics when our characters are silent, once again. The tower is destroyed. Our light lost. Or gear smashed to pieces. But Tess made it out safe and Eververse is setup and ready for business. #priorities.

        • Bump. Silent Guardian- Lost, what are you talking about in regards to "no one has made a big deal about this before?" Throughout our numerous DLCs and expansions there's been negative feedback about how our Guardians didn't have any cutscenes showing our guardian's interaction with NPCs AT ALL. DB and HoW DLCs didn't have any cutscenes on the whole (which was largely derided), and TK and RoI cutscenes not having any interaction with our guardian (not as much outcry but I distinctly remember reading posts regarding that and agreeing with them to an extend). In regards to an "immersive experience" and how our guardian being silent reflects that, I've got to disagree with you all across the board on that. When I think of "Immersive FPS experience" I really think of two games: Halo Reach and Bioshock. Now on the whole, THOSE were two FPSs that made some serious effort into making you feel like you're in the player character's shoes. Both games featured SOME, but certainly not a lot, of dialogue of the PCs. Also, both games put a lot of effort into making the cutscenes feel like they are being viewed through the character's eyes. Reach even did this by mixing in 3rd person, over the shoulder, and cinematic viewing perspectives along with first person for its cutscenes... somehow it worked! Bioshock of course, was all first person. Now, compare that to the cutscene I've seen in the Beta with our silent guardian.. c'mon. Nolanbot talks to us while we sit there silently with a tilt of the head? Wow, really immersive. I can tell you right now if we have to sit through cutscenes of our guardians communicating on the regular with hand jesters, head tilts, head shaking/nodding, and shoulder shrugging I'm gonna take Bungie to task for not getting their shit together and playing one of their games that years old that did it RIGHT. Luke Smith Shits the Bed Again Already made a post about this last time the sheets needed changes. Homeboy needs to stay in his hole and create content, leave the PR to the PR people. The Bungie executives have got to be kidding me with putting this guy in front of a microphone after so many stumbles that have pissed off the consumer base. I mean seriously, do him, them, us, and the good people of the world a FAVOR and keep him away from answering questions. I get it. The guy just doesn't know how to respond to questions. He's not really a complete douche bag (debatable). I know people like that. I've got friends like that. You know what I tell them? SHUT THE -blam!- UP! IGN AMA - You want hard? Nah.. you like it easy AMAs are cherry picked. That's the nature of the beast. I mean, their project lead can't go without setting the player base ablaze on answering the EASY questions. I don't think exposing these guys to more poignant and direct questions is going to do any good. AMAs are PR fluff stuff, ain't ever going to change. Honestly I don't think a lot of people WANT that to change. They say they do, but then go apeshit when they answer wrong. Nobody wins. That's What Patrol's For I'm fine without a shooting range. That's what's patrol is for! LoL But if enough people want it! Sure, why the hell not?!?! A weapon testing area like they had in Dead Space 3 would be what I'd like to see, but hey whatever.

It really isn't a big deal...but no you people need to find something else to bitch about. -blam!-ing get over yourselves and leave the forums if all you are going to do is complain. I have never seen so many people waste their days on something they can't stand. When I dislike something I try my best to avoid it. Why is that such a difficult concept?????

              • "nope" is the kind of answer you give when you are talking down to a child. "We have no plans to put a voice to your guardian," is saying no, with a complete sentence, and at the least, a smattering of respect to the audience.

                  • Simply saying 'yep' or 'nope' is dismissive and disrespectful. It's like he couldn't be bothered to even form a complete sentence because I guess a response with a little explanation or context is too much to ask. We don't deserve that apparently, even though we're paying his salary.

Me and my friends will voice cut scenes for the guardian. It will be delightfully horrible. Honestly, I think not voicing your guardian is just a design flaw. Could you imagine if Shepard (mass effect) wasn't voiced? Was Shepard talking immersion breaking? Was Shepard talking ruining anything? Our ghost is the main character. Or guardian just seems like a lifeless light infused zombie murdering his way across the solar system. Also 3 races 2 genders 3 classes that's 3x3x2 or 18 voices, however... I think you could use less than 18 people if the same person did ALL Exo dialogue for the 3 classes, but the dialogue being different per class, but the voice being the same per race. Which would be 6 unique voices, and 3 different sets of dialogue. There's 500 people at Bungie, they could just grab 6-18 people that already work there to do some voice work.

The silence from my Guardian is DEAFENING, seriously Bungie what the 🇧🇱 🇦 🇲 were you thinking. Are you just to lazy to code in voices, or are you to tight to pony up the wedge for a good voice actor . I remember getting the Gate lords eye for the queen, and actually thinking cool my Guardian spoke, and then again when he shared a personal moment with Ghost. But now when we've seen our friends die defending our home, our source of power the Traveler has been neutered, and our light stripped from us, then our one companion we've always counted on whose been there while we fought Crota Oryx and many others, who has brought us back to life over and over again dies, we've got Nothing to say about it, even while it's inert form is kicked over the edge like some child's toy, and we're mocked and ridiculed we say 🇳 🇴🇹 🇭 🇮 🇳 🇬. I'm astounded agog and aghast that you think this is good enough bungie, I'm afraid it's 🇳 🇴 🇹, and sadly if you do then you've proven you've slipped far from your past Halo glory days.

                        • this is a prime example i think of when the line gets fuzzy. some of the things these guys said is part of the decline of not only this game but other games that try to interact with fans.. take like a legend of zelda game. you get it, you hate it or love it, go to forums and speak with other gamers. but regardless you have to live with it. the game stands on its feet. with destiny, players tend to think they have the right to speak to developers. they have the right to demand they remake the game the way they want cause as one posted said HE PAYS THEIR SALARY (still lulz) and once a developer gives gamers even a taste of having a voice it gets abused. they dont owe any one anything. but its this climate of people believing as such, its a fascinating dynamic.

                        • I really hoped for Destiny 2 to be a great game, but from everything I seen so far it looks like it will be a disappointment. I will play it anyways and judge it. But I think Bungie had a chance here to make the greatest game of all time. But instead they decided to just listen to all pvp crybabies and not take any risks as far as their original vision for Destiny.

                          • Really it was the nope heard by a small group of fans overdedicated to a game that warrants that dedication less and less due to Activision squeezing what greatness is left out of Bungie. A little tip for Actibungo, if you're going to continually disappoint the fanbase at least have someone with charisma doing it and not beatnik rainman.

                              • Question. Are they "required" to speak to any of us? Are they "required" to listen to ideas? Are they "required" to incorporate any suggestions or do any fan service? I think people take things for granted. People are like...devs wouldnt survive 5 minutes here we would tear them to shreds...THINK ABOUT THAT. They dont owe you anything and you would waste an opportunity, a privilege to have YOUR voice heard to belittle people making you a game for your enjoyment? Too many idiots here that dont deserve the time of day with that childlike mentality.

                                • I'm going to be perfectly honest here. It doesn't bother me that my guardian is silent. That is the LEAST of my worries. Rather than worry about that, I'd rather focus on things that are going to hinder my day-to-day game experience like weapons system, the game clearly prioritizing PVP over PVE, the fact that every weapon will have static rolls, thereby eliminating godroll possibilities, etc. Those are the kinds of issues that would effect my day-to-day play and my ability to enjoy the game. As for my guardian not saying anything? Even in D1 my guardian spoke SOME. In Vanilla anyways. The fact he won't speak is a minor annoyance, but it doesn't harm my day-to-day experience anyways. It's not like you want cutscenes while you are doing strikes/raids and other activities you do repeatedly.

                                  • To be fair you really need one for a male and one for a female, and add filters to alter the way the voice sounds. After all it would go by race, not classes. But they really need to change up how they do the cutscenes if they are deciding that they want to keep with the silent protagonist thing (despite us talking in vanilla....), because stupid gestures and awkward pauses displayed on screen don't cut it and look really sloppy and lazy.

No RPG fan would like this. But what's soooo laughable and narcissistic is what about the disregard towards potential new Destiny players?! You think they will understand 1) a mute RPG lead, with no story to explain why there mute, which is obviously the notable trait of the character beyond being a space wizard. 2) why Destiny decided to be an RPG 3) what this place is, why bungie hosts it (to not listen) and why people come to this forum, to bleet about there mute guardian. Your officially UN-Selling your game. It's crazy
