Who else misses the *feel* of YR 1?

Play the first few minutes of this vid and tell me you don't miss the days when Destiny's story was focused on exploration and discovery. There was a real sensation that Bungie would gradually introduce us to a rich, dynamic universe, filled with intricate politics set in rich Haloesque set pieces like the Tower and Reef, & beautifully crafted environments like the Cosmodrome. 'Lord of the Rings in space' they said. Then along came a shouty two-dimensional bad guy in a flying space rectum with an army of holographic zombies, and the rivalries between the Awoken and Humans, and between the Tower factions, and even between the enemy races and Fallen Houses, became forgotten. Tell me, honestly, that TTK's story isn't cheap & uninspiring (bizarre Grimoire cards linked to Calcified Fragments, not withstanding). All of that rich lore, and its promise of fascinating multidimensional stories lost to a simple 'good guys versus bad guys versus slightly different bad guys' grind. What will YR3 bring, I wonder. *Second Edit* Since this is now the top trender, and a lot of people still don't quite get what I mean. Those of us of a certain age remember hopping off a Pelican for the very first time, and taking a few seconds to follow Halo up out of the horizon and over our heads. Who can honestly say they didn't smile about finding a sci-fi world totally different from anything else we'd ever seen? Not just another Starwars/Star trek ripoff, but something totally new. That was over a decade ago, but the feeling stays with you long after the dated graphics and warthog rolls have faded. For me, that feeling permeated the whole of Yr1; the music, the enemies, the NPC's, everything. The story was disjointed and raised more questions than it answered, but I wanted to know more. Yr2 has introduced a lot of new gameplay features (and nerfs), some are good, some are bad, but at the same time it totally abandoned that direction of mystery and adventure. Some of you obviously prefer the straightforward good versus evil story- fair enough. But for me, I think Bungie's at their best when they make you feel like a tiny part of a big world, rather than just a tiny soldier in a big fight.

    • Bungie has done great on all DLC but the year one felt like no other and honestly wish it was still as simple as year one

    • Well played by bungie. They hooked us all in year 1 thinking this game was the gonna be the greatest all time, and the way the game felt and played it was unbelievable. I couldn't count the nights i stayed up or the days I spent trying to get my first gally, finally beating skolas for the first time was a challenge, a TRUE challenge. The game was so DAMN GOOD. No doubt about it. Over the past year it's broke my heart, and it will never be like that again. This game was supposed to be unbeatable, now we can solo skolas, solo black spindle, and can even solo oryx. Wow......

I loved the good ole days where I would do vog and Crota than find some freinds to do the nightfall. I did it every week. Those where the times 😀 Who also thinks kings fall is terrible compared to the other two raids. Maybe it's just me

        • Ah year one, when blink and shotguns ruled. When a sniper had to play smart and use everything at their disposal to destroy a guardian crashing upon you. When the crucible was fast paced and no one was afraid to engage another guardian. When subclass abilities mattered and when evey subclass was unique in its own way. Yea. I miss year one, i miss the magic hold it had on me. Year two doesnt even come close.

          • I preferred the FUN of Y1. You FELT more powerful once you completed all the endgame activities and got the loot. You ground so hard for some really superb weapons, and they were so powerful and fun to use that you really wanted to keep playing, JUST to make use of those weapons. Who cares if you could wipe the floor with a strike boss while using the B-hammer or G-horn. It was fun. You killed Crota after all. Why should you still take 20 minutes to take down a piddly strike boss? Everything feels watered down or misplaced in Y2. Public events had a purpose at least through the HoW Era (you needed ascendant shards/energy still to level up some legendary items still) but now they feel more like an annoyance than anything. The prizes aren't rewarding, and their either way too easy or way too hard and no matter where they fit in the spectrum, your rewards are pretty much the same. Y2 gun perks are trash compared to Y1 perks, even though the Y1 perks have been mostly dialed back. Supers don't feel super/powerful anymore, and our guardians feel weaker overall even though we've had the illusion of progress. On a community level, it was easier to help guardians and get help from guardians in Y1, mainly before all the elitism developed. Met some of my clan members by helping them with nightfalls, exotic bounties, etc. Now, if you don't belong to the "get gud scrub club" your pretty much looked down upon. The raids in Y1 were much easier to carry people through, so there were more people willing to help others through what were difficult raids if you were at or near the appropriate light level. Now, the raid puts every player on an island and it can be so difficult to carry inexperienced players through that most don't even bother. The nightfall? Not nearly as fun. No drama over dying. No heightened tension when a player goes down. No good rewards. OH, and there's also no elemental primaries, which really shined during nightfall activities and made them FUN. The strike playlist is in shambles. I much preferred how it worked in Y1. In Y2, it feels like half of the strikes are missing and you are simply stuck running the same 3-4 strikes OVER and OVER. Really emphasizes the repetitive grind Destiny players suffer through. We did a LOT of the same things in Y1 that we did in Y2 (running forward/backward/sideways through the same areas, raids, POE, etc.) but the difference was we had a much greater arsenal of weapons and abilities at our disposal which made for a fun experience still, especially if you have a good group of friends to play with. Y2? Y2 pretty much pushed many of my friends away from this game. So yeah, I DEFINITELY miss Y1. I miss the launch music, I miss the good gear, I miss the fun, and I miss a lot of my Destiny friends. Good times. I doubt Bungie will be able to do enough to bring them back.

            • (Warning: slightly a rant) I think bungie is missing something here: FUN. I have been reading the comments on this thread and ops post, and what we all missed was the fun. I know bungie wants to make things challenging and at the same time not make everything too powerfull, but that can't happen. In yr1, we played with everything, and I mean everything. Patrols, strike playlist, nightfalls, weekly strikes, raids, crucible, public events, every dam bounty we could find, lvlng every faction, etc. Now we barely touch anything. Raid, trials, crucible, iron banner, challenge of elders, and maybe nightfall, thats it. No one even touches the dreadnought for the patrol. The reason for all of this is because we have to put in WAY TOO MUCH work just to get shit rewards. Yeah, we may have been pretty much gods in yr1, but not only did we have fun, we were rewarded for the EXACT work we put in. People even sought it as a challenge to do the nightfall solo because they knew they could get an exotic, and that is the best reward for over coming a challenge on their own. Not some stupid ghost shell that is 20 light lvls below your current light. I don't know how many might agree with me on this part, but what bungie should do is reset every nerf, buff, and game change back to the way it was in vanilla destiny, before dark below. And from there only make the proper changes that would help the game. Such as, just bringing up auto rifles and pulse rifles instead nerfing everything else. I know those 2 primary classes were the least used in the beginning of time. Actually keeping the tiers seperate, unlike now where exotic are the same as legendaries. Exotics are suppose to be overpowered that is why we can only have one armor and weapon equiped at a time. Bungie, please stop listening to the wrong part of the community. Don't destroy your creations just for the pity cries of the minority. Please make destiny fun again. Tl:Dr; #makedestinyfunagain

                • the "feel" of year 1 for me came from the guns and the abilities, they felt powerful they don't anymore. But I cant agree with on the "feel" of the destiny universe, I'm sorry but the story was a complete mess and told poorly through the missions. If anything the "story" elements in taken king were, for me, far more entertaining although like you said more cliche. I still dont know what the whole point was in the black garden or the cabal

                • Not saying year 2 is better. Not saying you're wrong. Just pointing out that part of what you miss is the feeling of a new game, walking into something completely blind. That feeling is not replaceable by anything in Bungie's power.

                  • Y1 was fun before those dedicated PVP players singing their nerf song. And of course Bungie was happy to nerf every guns, supers, armors.

                    • I don't know why, but crucible was so much more enjoyable for me in year one, despite the insanely overpowered or underpowered weapons and subclasses. Now that the crucible is significantly more balanced, it just doesn't feel as fun to play.
