Do you think bungie should change the level cap to 40 for non taken king players?
In my opinion it's a bit unfair that guardians that have been here since year 1 without the taken king have been "left in the dust" . I also think it will be a good change because non taken king players can level up and get ready for when they buy the dlc.

You paid for a game. Is it supposed to last for a lifetime? Most games don't get updates. Be thankful for the year of playtime and the countless hours you got out of it

Not really, no. Many games require you to purchase the expansion or dlc to gain access to new content. It's kind of a "thing".

No. They didn't pay for the content, simple as that. No one is entitled to any of the new content if they didn't pay for it.

On the surface it sounds good, but without the new content it's unnecessary. Year 1 players are already at max light for Y1 content.

No. You havent lost content....all the content you say you have lost are activities designed for end game players. Iron banner, Trials, NF, hard modes ect have always been carried forword to follow the newest endgame and level cap as end game activites. Not exclusive content for the dlc they released with.
