Not sure how many of you know this so I decided to make a thread. Link to article.
Update: Check out this new interview with DeeJ and Urk via IGN! They flat out confirm that you won't get reset to level 20. (Around 18:00 minutes in)
Update 2: You will be your highest level achieved. That means taking off your higher level armour before the release will not drop you down to 20.

Interviewer: Will you get reset to level 20?
Urk and DeeJ: Nope.
Urk: If you're a 32 or level 34 (examples) that's what's going to show when you start up The Taken King.

I hope that clarifies everything.
There have been many worried or curious as to whether your level would drop to 20 when The Taken King launches. It will not. You will automatically become the level that your armour equates to.
DeeJ also confirmed that players who have hit the existing cap of level 34 will “take their first steps” in The Taken King at that same level. Players who are of a lower but still end-game level (say 26, which you could achieve in vanilla Destiny without raiding) – will still be able to play The Taken King content, and will level up quickly.
What this seemingly means is that your experience-based level will jump to level 34 if your Light level when TTK drops is 34 (from what we understand). That said,
Bungie has not yet finalised what the entry level for The Taken King content will be, DeeJ added.
So everything is still subject to change and tweaking. I hope that clears things up for everyone.
Edit: Here's my understanding in a breakdown for more clarity:
"Hard" Levels (my term): 1-40 — levelled up through experience.
Light level: This is your power indicator. While you might be level 40, you can still be under the recommended Light power level for an activity, meaning it'll be (a bit) hard for you.
As of The Taken King and update 2.0, your Light level will be calculated based on your total attack and defence statistics rather than the combined total Light attributes of your armour. Some missions will have recommended Light levels, to indicate whether the gear you’re wearing is up to the task.
Also, here's an interview you may not have seen. It barely has over 50,000 views!
IMPORTANT
For those still unsure if what I'm saying is confirmed, hear it from DeeJ's mouth in this gamescom interview. This is also the video linked above.

10 RepliesI played destiny and both expansions on my Xbox 360. I am buying the taken king for my Xbox one. Will I keep my characters on my Xbox one or have to start over?
-
4 RepliesThat's stupid. In that case, we will be max level in about a couple hours worth of missions and bounties. Hopefully there's a way to opt out like putting on common gear or something.
-
1 ReplyBut we are actually only "level" 20. We are "light level" 34
-
5 RepliesI'm gonna assume we'll reset to 20 and the missions will be based on level of recommended armor for that mission so the better armor the better defense?
-
-
I doubt it, if you've seen other videos you'll see Guardians at level 30.

3 RepliesI just don't understand why they are putting so much time and production energy into changing a system that worked fine the way it was. If it's not broke don't fix it. I'm glad they are making RNG recognize items that you already have, that is really all they needed to change. They've already made it easy to level up in HoW, so I don't understand, are they trying to make it easier? If they put half the time they put into reworking vendors, leveling, and weapon balance and weapons, into creating new CONTENT for the game, I'm sure they could push out a quality expansion the size of TTK every 3 months! But, like their Cod friends at Activision, Bungie now seems content to spend time pushing superficial changes as opposed to large scale additions to the game. I will admit that TTK looks like a decent addition to the game... about time! But, we need something like that every 3 months. Not two mini dlc's and one decent expansion in a year. That will not promote the continuous playerbase that Bungie is looking for. I haven't heard them bragging about their millions of players averaging 3 hours a day in many months. Games don't usually report on dwindling playerbase. Judging from my ghost town of a friends list, Destiny has dwindled already, and will dwindle more in year two, if they don't start pushing out real CONTENT and not money grab gimmicks. TTK will probably last longer than the 3 weeks I played HoW and TDB each. But, it certainly wont last 5 or 6 months. So, they better be planning some strong quick follow up. Or year 2 is going to hurt them.

3 RepliesIf all of your characters are 34s by then, will that one time use level buff thing be useful? This is what I'm wondering. If it's not useful for your level, will it also level up gear and guns you have equipped along with you? (Maybe like a free exotic upgrade or something)

Edited by Final Rune: 8/7/2015 9:30:27 PMHmmm, I wonder how this will effect people who haven't purchased TTK on launch. edit: thanks for the Luke Smith interview, hadn't seen that one.
-
4 RepliesSo if I swap out my gear to be level 20 before I get the expansion, will I be 20 or will it remember I was 34? CONUMDRUM.
-
1 ReplyAs long as it makes dlc if can get it fun then i'm all for it.
-
Starting at level 20 would be fun. I would be fine with that.
-
I'd rather start from 20, but I won't because I don't want to be at a disadvantage
-
Even if we were pushed back to 20, it's just a different way of keeping score, you're going to make it to 40 before anyone new.
-
Sorry but I feel starting from Level 20 is fine since that's the last Exp Level player reached.
-
10 RepliesI'd rather start at XP level 20.. This DLC is going to die out too quickly if we stay 34 and we only need to get 6 levels. That would be dumb on Bungie's part, I think.
-
Seems to be the case. Honestly, I'd of preferred the grind from level 20. Lol
-
Well, it sounds good. I am still concerned and the interpretation getting skewed between "Level" and " Light". I do hope that you are right.
-
Yay yay yaY
-
6 RepliesNot sure why anyone would care if you were knocked down to 20. "Oh no I have to play the game what were they thinking, I quit."
-
Edited by Zoom In: 8/7/2015 6:42:16 PMThis still hasn't been confirmed. Deej didn't seem to know himself when asked and said "you're good to go" and Luke Smith wouldn't answer. I will continue to look at all of this as rumors and will remind people that this hasn't been confirmed.
-
2 RepliesWhen it refers to 'same level' I still can't decide whether it means base XP level or our light level, at this point I feel it could be either...:0

Edited by COW GUY: 8/7/2015 6:07:09 PMThe legend returns Thanks for this I was curioud
-
Thank you
-
1 ReplyEdited by Mattman: 8/7/2015 5:04:45 PMDeeJ didn't even sound certain about his answers. The guy asked, "If I'm level 26, will I be level 26 at the start of Taken King?" then DeeJ just said vaguely, "You're good to go." Nice answer?

So if i equip my non-aacended vog or crota armor sets before Ttk drops will i be locked in at 30 or 32? Even if i have the gear to be level 34?
