Interesting observation re: female player
I've played video games online since back in the days with text based MUDs and I'm only now starring to see why woman get tired of playing online or play as male characters.
I have been very fortunate to find a partner who enjoys playing video games and thanks to Borderlands, she became pretty decent at FPS. The idea of us playing Destiny together was fantastic and so we've bought two PS4s and try to play a couple nights a week.
It wasn't until recently when we were using her PS4 for Netflix that I noticed how many friend requests she had. I asked who they are and she said she doesn't know. Just that every time she is in the tower there are players who invite her to fire teams and send PSN invites.
So I decided to watch one day as we were in the tower and sure enough many players (male characters) run up to her and point or dance and other things to get her attention. I'll come upstairs and of course she has had friend requests and fire team invites in the matter of 15 minutes.
I'm not sure if this is all because men/boys are shocked at female gamers, if they feel they have some male driven need to support and take care of the feeble woman, or they think that it could lead to something romantic.
My partner didn't really notice or care at first. She just ignored the messages. But now it's to the point where she has to waste time deleting all these messages/invites and that becomes a hassle. I feel like this is the video game equivalent of a cat call on the street. The strange assumption that women are there for your viewing and to behave with however you want.
Just because a person has a user name that seems like it's a female gamer and their in game avatar is female.. doesn't mean they want to be your friend.
Please, do female gamers (and humanity as a whole) a big favor and let them just play. If a person wants help, they will help. Maybe find a reason other than "you're a chick" to be friends with the player.
It's not to say everyone is like this (clearly since Destiny player base is huge in comparison) but for anyone who reads this, I hope it gives you something to think about.

So boys, that might not be a chick you guys are cracking onto. Perhaps keep that in mind. Edited for might.

I head to the tower to pick up some bounties and a minute in, I get a message from what I assume is a guy. This person asked if I needed help, I said no. Then proceeded to ask if I was sure, I said yes, no thanks. I leave the tower and get one last message, it said that if I wanted help to message him. Followed by: ;) Ugh! That shit was annoying, he was lucky I was tired or I would've strifed him. I just wanted to level up my Titan ASAP. P.S. I'm a guy.

My GT has the word "girl" in it (a decision I often regret) and it's pretty funny when I'm in the tower but in my inventory (so not looking at my screen) and I leave the inventory, return to viewing screen .... only to see a player crouched in front of my character trying to buy his face in my character's crotch. I'm sure they think it's hysterical and clearly they think they I will be impressed by their cleverness as they usually follow up with a friend request. LMFAO... yeah right, like I really want to spend hours of game time playing with an immature douchebag... REQUEST DENIED!

1 ReplyI play as a female character. Cuz they appear harder to hit when strafing as they are skinnier. Never had any invites because of my characters gender. Maybe ps4 is just full of goons.

I know people who do this to female gamers all the time, it usually ends up that I leave the squad and send an apology to her, because it really is ridiculous. Sure send her a friend invite, If you get to know her maybe, but sending one right out of the blue...... Its kind of creepy to them I would think. I have female gamer friends, its really unnecessary to give them all of the extra attention, they are smart enough to figure things out on their own, and if they need help, they'll ask. I used to be one of these guys who go head over heels for female gamers, and for that I apologize. I realized that female gamers are not very common compared to male gamers because of guys who act like I used to.

I am a female gamer and left my character in the tower for about 30 mins while I left the house for a few. I came home and had over 20 requests, both fireteam and friend requests. I told my boyfriend about it and he was telling me that it was just because I'm a girl. I have only for a few people that aren't just flirting and crap like that. I'm not a horrible player, but I am still new to FPS. I'm thankful that my boyfriend showed me how to delete all the messages in my inbox all at the same time. I'm sure a few messages got lost in the shuffle of it all. I find it funny that guys seem to be worse than in a bar at thinking they are going to pick up girls like this. Then they just turn into a complete douchebag when I mention my boyfriend. HAHA It's funny at times, but it is very annoying when it keeps getting worse as I level up my character.

Doubt that you get random invites with no lvl 30's. Having a female charcter means nothing. People in my clan have female charcters and this does not happen....

That's pretty dehumanizing if you ask me. You should treat her like a fellow, respectable PERSON and not care what other people think.

I get them across all characters 2 male & a female awoken hunter it's more to do with lvl or gear! That's why when I head to the tower I now change into rare/anti invite gear! ;)

I start getting invites and friend requests from people in the tower before I even finish loading into the tower. my warlock (male) gets a half dozen or more a day. my hunter(female) has gotten 2 and I've had her longer lol.

luckily for her a large portion of the destiny community has a small enough brain to make female characters anyway regardless of their sex, so hopefully she can blend better with the modern day transgender gamers

I have a female and a male hunter with 31 and raid shader / weapons. The male hunter ALWAYS gets invited and spammed with requests. The female never. Thats why i prefer her as my first char. I am male btw.

My gf is the same, she doesn't go on a lot of multiplayer games cause she doesn't want to have to deal with the immature people going "OMG ITZ A GURL!"

I've been in the Tower with one of my female friends. Our characters would be the same level, but she'd get an invite and I wouldn't. Cleaning out unwanted msgs does get annoying though. Some guys think the anonymity of the internet gives them the right to harass women just because they're there. My sympathies. Some days are heavier on random invites for guys & gals though... *Cough* Tuesday *Cough*
