I am a 50yo very average 1.2kd PVP player. What the hell am I doing in a lobby with 50x flawless opponents?

  • I’m about the same except I’m 47. Old thumbs just aren’t that quick anymore. I look at it this way. It’s a game. I’m going to suck some matches and rock others. If I’m going to get any better playing against the good players is the only way that’s going to happen. If I get beat fair with no lag then I tip my hat.

SBMM should be in competitive, not quickplay. Bungie should also allow players to choose between sbmm and cbmm - it was actually a thing in halo...

    • Absolutely not, if you want to only match similar 1.2s go to comp. Quickplay by literal definition is supposed to find the quickest possible match regardless of skill, connection or other criteria You've been babied enough with d2, if you enter qp you accept that the allies and opponents are completely luck of the draw

      • SBMM for comp? Yes For qp? No, it doesn't belong in the non-competitive playlist. That's all there is too it Btw when I was growing up playing the halo games I don't recall anyone ever begging the devs for protection from better players, I'm truly aghast at how babyish and participation trophy like people have become. • you're getting reminded of how bad you are. SBMM was horrible, like everything Bungie have no sense of balance, when first introduced in D1 being from Australia with top 5% - 10% in ever stat id just sit in the lobby till i got mongoose error which is search time out because i just wouldnt find anyone unless it was a peak time and even then i had about a 1 - 2 hour window. Reality is and this has been said before by the PVP Devs is that theres nothing to fix, if you cant go flawless its because the other team is better then you, there is no need to make it easier for bad players to go flawless.

          • The same thing you're doing in a lobby with below 1.0 kd opponents in the next match. No need for any degree of SBMM in quickplay. It does not belong there.

              • Quickplay has taken a turn for the worst after the recent update. Might hate the meta but the most infuriating thing is the lag. Never seen so many invincible and teleporting guardians before.

                • Shit happens. I'm sure players who are worse than you wonder why they're matched against very average 50yo. Bungie tried sbmm and the community didn't like it because connection quality was trash. So there ya go.

                  • I understand your frustration, I'm going to give my thoughts on this. I'm a top 1% that is t500 in multiple playlists (not saying it to brag, just so you can see the perspective of a high level player). So the SBMM debate will always exist, the top players are against it and the lower players are against it for obvious reasons on both sides. I completely understand that those low level players are not having the most fun time in the crucible due to no SBMM, and the argument "you learn by playing against better players than you" is true to some degree but a 0.5kd won't learn anything against a 2kd, in fact he'll learn to not play crucible. With that being said, SBMM ruins crucible at the top level. These are the players that spend a lot of time there and the way it works is, if you want to have a chance you have to go with a full team. Queue times take over 5 mins and there is extreme lag (literally). Destiny is a very easy shooter, aim assist values are very high and there are many easy ways to "cheese" players, the skillgap in this game isn't how well you can hit your shots, it's actually ability usage and movement. The issue with SBMM before is that it didn't let any of the top players have somewhere where it didn't feel like it was an MLG tournament with horrendous lag. Also it's important to note that those lower skilled players probably barely play PvP and to balance it around them would be stupid. Also if you really are a 1.2 kd (not 1.2 efficiency, a lot of people get that mixed) you are quite above average as the average KD for destiny 2 last time I checked was a 0.76, so realistically speaking most of the people you play against WILL be worse, but then again with SBMM stats are inflated either lower or higher. I averaged a 1.8kd before and now I average a 4kd. With all this being said, I fully think QP should have 0 SBMM, the chances of someone of your caliber matching me are insanely ridiculous so it shouldn't be an issue. If you want a competitive experience the playlist literally exists for that. BUT QP should have these changes: • Groups play vs groups (4 stack v 4 stack) • A system where there is SBMM for very low players (below .5kd and they don't match 2kd+) • A system where new players don't play versus highly experieced, with D2 being the game for psn+, a level 2 should not be with me nor against me. It's important to note, numbers since the removal of SBMM have nearly doubled, this happened before SoH even came out and it's stayed pretty close throughout the whole month. Also it's important to note that everything else has SBMM (rumble and the weekly playlist). There are literally more playlists with SBMM than without.

                    • The problem is what certain skill tier of the community feels what mode should be sweaty and which is laid back. Problem is that tier is a very small percentage of the player base. Quickplay, where a good portion of the top tier doesn't play, should be more balanced for the rest of the community. That means sbmm so that they are paired with similar skill levels. Comp, which should promote the best teams or individuals, should not have sbmm on. This way the players who actually want, and have the ability, to get gud can in a more competitive environment. The top tier players didn't want to play their own peers in QP all the time. However isn't that a consequence of being that good? That you play people of your skill level? Why should their casual play consist of stopping lower tier players? How is that good or fun for them? The top tier players think people that have that much more of a skill gap then then will learn something from getting trounced like that. It doesn't work that way.

                    • If you only ever play against people of your skill level then you'll never get better. Without sbmm you will sometimes match against people that are terrible, and you will sometimes match against the best players in the game. Sure that one match when you're playing against 50x flawless opponents might suck, but you could at least try to learn from it by watching how the opposing team plays. Then the next match you'll probably end up playing against significantly worse players that you could do good against.

                          • Yes yes and yes. I’m in same exact boat and have been posting this same thing for weeks. You and I should be playing each other for fun but competitive matches. Instead we get matched against 4 stacks of sweaty try hards who “just wanna relax”, which really means they don’t wanna fight someone equal in skill, so Bungie let’s them steamroll the rest of us. I’m not looking to match up against .2 kd new players. I don’t need that too feel good. Just equal skill match ups. Not these 7.0 kd trial kings. Not fun, Bungie. Turn on SBMM.

                              • If Bungie is going to ruin the pvp experience for average or below average players they should make it completely separate from pve--no milestones, quests, catalysts, or anything else that affects pve. That way those of us who are tired of getting stomped 123 to 21 could just stop playing pvp without being penalized in the pve part of the game. I never really liked pvp even when there was skill-based matching, but now I loathe it. It has a very negative impact on my overall perception of Destiny 2 as a whole.

Are you old enough to have a job? If no then, for god's sake I am old enough to be your grandad, what the hell are you doing arguing on the internet with me? Do you have a job that has pay rises every year? If no, then "get gud" When they decide on your pay rise, is this based on your performance? If no, then "get gud" Is your performance rated at a national/global level against all similar employees? If no, congratulations you are experiencing SBMM.

                                • I'm a disabled career firefighter in my 40's. Unfortunately i have too much time to play. I'm fairly decent with a 1.76, but there is a small measure of SBMM. They had it for D1 and season one of D2, but shut it off during all of season 2. It's back on. I say it's back on (on their own terms/algorithms). I can play a match and get 30 kills with a 4.0 then get a message they're breaking up matchmaking to find more suitable opponents. Or i can get 12 kills with a 1.0 and get the same message. The big question is how they determine SBMM. They evaluate you and those in your potential lobby. If you are good, they may throw some less skilled players on your team. If your not good they'll they're done skilled players on your team. They try to balance the scales, but they're kind of lacking. If you're the "low man" balancing a team your going to get wrecked (not fun). If you're the top man you'll be carrying much of your team (not fun). With the player base really low right now there's not a whole lot of gamers like there used to be. Also, with Trials ending tomorrow, the sweaties will be playing more QP now than ever before. Lastly, i thought i would really hate the new PvP, but i like it (aside from a few things). A bit of PvP advice (even though you didn't ask). Don't keep switching guns every time you lose. Pick something your good with and just stick with it. Make a long range loadout and close range loadout. The new update not only has buffed weapons they literally deceased the TTK (time to kill) with that kind there are two thought processes 1. Fast firing weapon with low impact to shred (my idea) 2. Low firing high impact for kills with less rounds used (not usually great... For me) I want to be able to put rounds down range ASAP. The fast firing low impact have almost always been a meta throughout Destiny PvP because they have the fastest TTK, but require a close to mid range play style. The biggest thing though is try not to get frustrated. Good luck!
