First "perfect" game

What's the first game that at the time you considered basically "perfect"? Name the game, what system it was on, and any commentary around your thoughts. Mine was Super Mario Bros. 3 for the original NES. EDIT: great suggestions everyone. There are definitely a few on here I never got to play that I'll have to go back and try to get to! EDIT 2: looking like Halo 3 and Star Wars Battlefront II are the leaders (halo is ahead if you consider all Halo as a franchise). One not mentioned, but all these great ideas got me to thinking about was Dark Cloud or Rogue Galaxy for ps2. Fantastic rpgs if you've never played them

  • Mine was StarWars Battlefront 2 on the ps2. Only played that for about a year or so. I was dumb and didn't know how to play online, so I just did galactic conquest over and over again. I loved it.

      • Mine was ratchet and clank for ps2. I didn't even want it, my uncle bought it for my birthday and I tried it and it was the best thing ever. Still one of my favorite games along with souls games.

            • Super Mario World for SNES. I played it recently on my SNES and it still looked nice. My SNES is as old as me almost.

I'm cynical... and as such, I'll nitpick about anything. I would consider Super Mario World to be a near perfect game, even though I never finished it until years later (on an emulator). It was perfectly suited for the hardware available at the time. It's simple, yet elegant design never threw you off. The controls were tight and responsive and it showcased new technology without overusing it (like most launch titles). I generally consider the SNES to be the perfect console as well. Despite Nintendo being Nintendo and censoring Mortal Kombat and all the more adult games that came later. It didn't do everything perfectly, but it was damn close. After that, consoles got gimmicky for a while and they turned into small affordable PCs. Now we have some kind of awkward parity across the board. Because of that, we will rarely see another game designed to play perfectly on its own console. Even exclusives like Halo and Uncharted still feel like they want to be on a souped up PC. All of that aside, I don't think SMW was a very good game, but it was flawless in it's execution. Make sense of that how you will. Edit: Chrono Trigger is up there, along with Secret Of Mana. But those had a lot more undesirable quirks than the simple elegance of a Mario game. Like I said though, I've never enjoyed a Mario game, but I do appreciate them.

              • I remember when Rogue Galaxy had commercials and was debuting at Gamestop, it came out not long before FFXII IIRC. It was like a battle of RPG's. Went back and beat it eventually, was saddened by the lack of costumes and the ending was meh but it was a good game otherwise

The first perfect game.... Would be Halo with a server browser. (On consoles) A Halo game that pushes Custom gaming to the forefront of the entire experience. A Halo game that doesn't try to force people into a small handful of playlists that should all be called TEAM SLAYER considering the reality of the voting system and how the majority of players always vote for TEAM SLAYER. And the fact that EVERY PLAYLIST has TEAM SLAYER as an option and it comes up 99% of the time as a voting option....basically forcing players like me to have to play TEAM SLAYER every time I wanted to play. A Halo game that doesn't lock you into a lobby before you know who or what you are playing. A Halo game that doesn't try to ban you because it threw you into a room with a bunch of morons. A Halo game that realizes...Forge is a waste of time... when customs is limited to friends only. When Halo pulls its f.ucking head out of its f.ucking a.ss, IT will become the perfect game. It will kill off CoD and every other FPS out there. But that's never going to happen...... Because the community that plays it... Would rather nitpick assets like sprint and jetpacks. Instead of asking for complete control over those assets. Because you got dumbf.ucks, who make excuses like... "I might join a room that sucks...." Yeah? well..... matchmaking has been forcing me to play in rooms that suck... EVER SINCE HALO 2! And because you'd rather nitpick symptoms, instead of the cause of the symptoms. We are 4.... no.. make that 5 games later, and still haven't fixed the problem. It's actually 6 possibly 7 games later. I keep forgetting about the Anniversary remakes that were a complete waste of time plus MCC. When you all realize that online gaming is a Casual affair. When you all realize that Numbers next to your name, gained over the internet, where lag, morons, stacked teams vs randoms, etc., have a huge impact on those numbers... Yeah...... Cry some more about not having enough ranked playlists you -blam!-ing morons.

                          • Hydro Thunder on PS. It did not give a rats ass if you wanted a difficulty. You had to win and score points to progress. Still one of the harder games out there to date. I don't know of too many people personally who beat the full game. Aka the tournament mode, place high enough to have a fee placement for the next race.
