Hello runners 🤾♀️🤾🤾♂️!
One of the reasons I prefer solo a lot of the times... is because when I play trio squad fill, I end up 2 down quite often... because my team doesn't understand how to move around safely.
I was going to cite manuals... I thought about this over the last couple days.
1. Real Combat isn't a video game... I wouldn't want to conflate that.
2. It might be CoC... probably CoC.
Suffice to say, I'm not making this stuff up... feel free to search it, the information is publicly available.
What I'm talking about are small squad tactics, movement, and formations. And these ideas are vital to your survival and success in Marathon:
Column, Wedge, Line
&
File
Adapted for 3-person squads.
Picture a clock face for reference ⌚.
Column would be 12, 3, 6... 12, 9, 6
Wedge would 12, 3, 9
Line is a line... say 12 X axis
File is Y axis, you could also say 12
File is usually pretty tight, within a few meters of each other.
However, the other formations expand, and contract based on where you are, the perceived threat, and squad actions.
Let's use column [If the below seems confusing, draw a clock face on a piece of paper]:
12 is scout and probably Team Leader — covers front & left (3)/right(9)
3,9 — dbls front and right (3), left (9)
6 covers the rear flank.
12 scans away from 3,9 (at 3, 12 to 9 — at 9, 12 to 3)
3,9 scans to the 12 (3 to 12 — 9 to 12)
6 scans to either 3, 9
If you can visualize that scanning, you're creating a FoV (Field of View)/ LoS (Line of Sight)...
Radar.
As a squad acting like, using your peepers 👁️👁️ eyes to scan like a Radar sensor.
Whilst moving.
It really doesn't serve the team if everyone is locked in the same tunnel visually.
There is a weak side to column, it's obviously the side opposite 3/9.
You put that flank on cover, against terrain, etc.
In places you can't, you can move to wedge... but then your rear flank is vulnerable.
And these movements are like calling audibles in American Football.
12 moving to 3 or 9.
3 moving to 12, 9 moving to 12
6 moving to 3 or 9 to Wedge.
When people talk about "rotations"...
These are the fundamentals. I rotate off point (12) to 3, 9... 6 to heal, pop utility
3,9 rotates to point (12).
Audibles and substitutions as the situation dynamically calls for.
I honestly think 🤔, and it's ok... that some people say things because it's "gamer" verbiage/terms... but don't understand what it actually means.
"Rotate" doesn't mean 'move' generically... it means moving with "purpose" ... "methodically".
And of course, with synergy... regular squadmates, it's easier.
However, even with randoms... this can be achieved quite easily IF everyone understands these fundamentals.
And that's why I made this topic. To help people.
