Bungie could quiet down a lot of chatter surrounding their game if they were a little more transparent about the performance. But without disclosing this information, one can interpret that the game isn't doing well. (Stevie Wonder could see that, I know.)
But the reason I say that is because of how Ubisoft handled the post marketing for assassin's creed shadows. They parades around their numbers as if the game was a monumental success, and it turns out. No. It was in fact not a success.
So if marathon is a success, then showing us the numbers would codify that. But when all we have is steamdb to go off of, and Paul Tassi saying that marathon is allegedly a PC game.
What's going on? Is Bungie on full damage control? Are they expecting an angrily worded letter from Sony? Stay tuned!

Would it matter if we knew? Is 1m copies sold good for Sony? Is 60k peak players daily good for Sony? Only way to know will be to wait for Sony next quarterly report to see if they mention Marathon’s performance. Everything else is speculation. The player count trend is somewhat informative though I believe. Marathon drop 25% roughly in the first week. It’s far from being a crash like High-guard, I don’t know if that’s good sign though.

You can ask AI. It's doing well for it's genre, but I don't think it is doing well for Sony's standards, so I am honestly a bit wary of the game's lifespan, not because the player base because it already has dedicated players, but because it doesn't appeal to non-pvp players which most Destiny 2 players are. So doesn't seem like Marathon will ever measure up to the live-service sucess that Destiny was, (not to mention not great customization options in Marathon for whales to spend money on).
