Destiny is NOT an MMO

Why do people keep calling Destiny an MMO? It really irritates me. Bungie has done everything they can to say "it's not an MMO, guys" but everyone keeps putting that label on it. There are only a very select few things that could be considered "MMO" and they really are major MMO staples or major gameplay. Destiny is a FPS, with an advanced form of matchmaking. Destiny is an Shared World-FPS-RPG. Is Red Dead Redemption a MMO because it has 16 players all in the same world? That's more than Destiny allows as far as we know (Deej mentioned that there was 8 [I think] players in the E3 demo.) Is GTA 5 a MMO? Is Dark Souls 1/2 a MMO? You can phase into other peoples world and everyone interacts with each other through messages. Is M.A.G. A MMO? Is Borderlands a MMO? _____________________________________________________________________________ Edit: This is straight from Bungie in on of the Mail Sacks! Caballero Do you guys ever get tired of people calling it an MMO? Not at all. Do you guys ever get tired of us insisting it’s not an MMO? Debate about this game is always fun, and we welcome it. The ideas that are shaping Destiny come from a lot of different places. We’re drawing the best elements from experiences we love. Like an MMO, our game will compel you to explore. You’ll embody a character that evolves on that journey. Unlike an MMO, the entire experience is built around heart-pounding action that you’ll see through the eyes of your hero. Ultimately, we’re looking forward to knowing how you describe Destiny, once you’ve played it. _____________________________________________________________________________ This is from Coup de Grace, he commented down below quoting Bungie in an interview. "We took this mesh-based networking that we’ve been developing for years and years with Halo and adapted that networking to work in a seamless interconnected world full of other players and AIs. So when you’re playing a destination you’re moving from area to area and every one of those areas has got this mesh networking with a group of players that are in it at this one time. And then it has its own servers for that particular area so you’re continuously moving around between these groups of both consoles and also dedicated servers that are hosting it." ... "For us we’ve kind of said we want this game world to be able to work with millions of players online at once. And that means playing to the strengths of the consoles. Being able to use these very powerful machines to run a lot of the simulation. Being able to use the servers in a seamless fashion so that as you’re moving from place to place you’re switching networks with all of the different people that are around you. You’ve got a very high quality fast action gameplay experience. If you have all of these calculations taking place in a central server that’s one place in the world you can’t really have a fast action experience." That's straight from Bungie. Yes, you can say Destiny has MMO elements, but it is not an MMO. If you guys want to prove me long, then write every way in which Destiny is like an MMO. Comparing this game to MMOs like World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, Star Wars: The Old Republic, Rift, EVE Online... it's clear that Destiny is not a part of that. I played WoW for about 5 years, I think I should know what a MMO is. Here are some reasons why I don't consider it a MMO. 1) There is low importance put upon leveling. All major MMOs put an emphasis on leveling. Look at WoW, it's level cap is at 90. Destiny is rumored to have a level cap at 20 (or low anyways) and they put emphasis on skill/abilities/gear. 2) MMOs and class roles. Now in Destiny there are abilites which can fit a role, but no class is a "tank" or "healer." A main staple of MMOs is the holy trinity of healer-dps-tank. 3) An economy. Destiny lacks an auction house or player economy, which is another MMO element. 4) MMOs have massive amounts of players. Look at a capitol cities in WoW, there are hundreds and hundreds of people in them. Also, a level 10 dungeon in WoW uses 5 players. A high level raid in Destiny only has 6. A raid in WoW has 25! 5) Quest/mission structure. Destiny has a campaign. A liner story mission mode. MMOs tell their story through tons of different quests in different places. Destiny has missions which can be given any where, where as MMOs usually have a town that gives out quests and once you're down with that area you never go back. 6) MMO is a shortened version of MMORPG. Destiny is an RPG, therefore it will have similarities to MMOs, that doesn't mean that it is one. 7) MMOs have a very distinctive style of gameplay. Look at the top MMOs and they all play very similarly. Just like any genre. Destiny does not play like a MMO. 8) MMOs also have a wide range of non-combat activities, such as mining/smithing, tailoring, fishing, etc. Destiny has non-combat activities, but nowhere near the scale of MMOs. (Halo also has non-combat games, such as in forge mode.) I'll be playing Destiny no matter what they call it though.

    • To everyone that says Destiny isn't a MMO, because Bungie says it's a Shared world shooter, you just prove how gullible the general population is, not thinking for yourselves, and why advertising is so successful. Because you believe everything you're told, even when all the evidence tells you otherwise.

Here is what I think: MMO has a stigma, a negative one, or positive one if you are a fan of MMOs. This game is not an MMO simply because Bungie has done things with the MMO formula to make it extremely accessible to casual players, maybe more target them. MMOs, whether its built into the design or not, are not for casual players, with high demands for time spent and enormous effort that goes into creating your character and rare items. While this game does reward players for their time, you don't have to join a clan, and have to regularly play online with that clan abiding by their rules. I can play by myself, for an hour, and possibly get something great without having to play with 20 others who mandate that I be on at a certain time and do certain things otherwise I get kicked out. I don't have to worry about not being able to make it on for a week or two and losing my friends, or worry about them being gone and not being able to do much of anything. I can play how I want to, not play how anyone else wants me to. Casual gamer and MMOs are on opposite ends of the spectrum, and Destiny was made to work for casual gamers as much, if not more than the hardcore MMO player. This is not an MMO, its a Shared World Shooter. Its a stigma that Bungie is trying to avoid, not because (or just because) the thought of the fat, 40 year old virgin who lost his job stereotype, or the family who let their kid die because they were on for 40 hours straight doing a raid, but for the reasons I have listed. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkCNJRfSZBU While this is staged, it fits that stereotype Bungie is trying to avoid. Who the hell wants to play like this? While reckless, I would rather have the fun Leeroy is having. Who the hell wants to be told what to do all the time, and be locked into a certain role?

Here are some reasons why I know Destiny is an MMO. 1) ("All MMO's are endlessly killing dudes that are evenly scattered across a meadow. and all a new one can do is change the color of the grass and what hats everyone's wearing" -Yahtzee Croshaw_Escapist Magazine) and if the gameplay videos of Destiny's Alpha is any indication on what the final game will be like. than head the view of a seasoned video game journalist. 2)There is large importance put upon leveling. they may put the emphasis on skill, abilities and gear but it's leveling nun the less. 3) Destiny's class based system fits the holy trinity of healer-dps-tank formula to a T. 4) MMOs have massive amounts of players that roam around open environments grinding npc's for xp to improve their stats. (doesn't matter if the stat building is in the gear or the player. stat grinding is STAT GRINDING) 4) Quest/mission structure. Destiny lacks a liner story mode. and tells their story through tons of different quests in different places. Destiny has the tower that gives out quests. like the towns in an MMO 5) MMO is a shortened version of MMORPG. Destiny is an RPG, therefore it will have similarities to MMOs, that doesn't mean that it is one. 6) Destiny plays like an MMO you grind to level, so you can raid (sorry i mean strike) to get gear with better stats so you can grind to improve that gear to make it possible to do more difficult strike's to get better gear with better stats. (looking at it this way WOW is a better game. No need to grind to improve something your going to dump when you out level it.) • It's too late. There is no point in arguing it, because the media has already decided and labled Destiny as a next generation MMO. Gaming sites, Yahoo, GI, Forbes, have all referred to Destiny as an MMO. Some of them say its a new type of MMO designed for consoles and has different social interaction rules, but it is still being labled as an MMO. Most people outside of these forums don't see Destiny as a "shared world shooter" nor will they take Bungie's word for it that is isn't an MMO. They see what they see and they see an MMO. My biggest question is... why does this matter to you so much?

Destiny is an FPS with some RPG elements thrown in. Simple as that. Not an MMO, not even close. "Massive" can be a matter of opinion, but you can't possibly think that 16 players is massive. The people that don't know this have themselves to blame for not knowing what kind of game they're getting into. There are some MMOish things in Destiny, to be fair, but even Bungie insists that its not an MMO.
