I think what turns people off in survival games, things like SSFHC in ARPGs... rogue-likes and extraction shooters...
IS
Losing your stuff.
AR mitigates this with blueprints, and... let's be honest, a shallow loot pool.
You can play Marathon like a tactical rouge-like...
Or a survival'esque FPS...
Alot of survival games have crafting tables/stations. And through progression you learn patterns/recipes... you upgrade your crafting station.
Once you do, you can remake things you lose... stuff that breaks, etc.
It just costs resources. So... then that... develops a loop for resource gathering and management to compliment how you want to play the game.
You can do that in Marathon.
By leveling up your factions.
By deciding what loot they have... faction to faction that synergizes with how you want to play the game.
Namely your Perma- Runner kits.
I'm going to play it like a Rogue-like ... but the latter will be my base.
That reliability and consistency of mastering Runner configs that you'll always be able to recall once you level up your crafting tables... ahem* Factions.
Who has Emp nades? Would be an example for myself. Healing, the ability to heal... while in combat... it's going to be strong - so that's where my mind is at.
Who unlocks survivability via permanently accessible kit components I plan on using with Thief & Triage?
Essentially... my goal is to game craft Perma kits via faction unlocks that will allow me essentially upgraded baselines for the shells I plan on playing.
TLDR - Research Faction unlocks... prioritize the ones with unlocks that will permanently upgrade your baseline for way you play and the shells you favor.
