Don’t pick up any of your legendaries or exotics, do the public event and when the pond comes back, pick all your stuff up and it’ll boost the focused fishing. Me and my brother had 15 purples on the ground and it took us into the 4th bar right from the start.

I mean having to do that in itself shi2s it's poorly designed. You shouldn't have to leave fish on the ground to store them up for after the public event. Good idea though. Guess I can try that /sigh
