Raid Virgins

Anyone else still not done the Raid? What's your reason? I've had Destiny since day one, have a lvl 29 Hunter and lvl 28 Warlock, and the closest I've come is to just killing things outside of the Vault for the hell of it. The few friends I have that had Destiny didn't like the game and have already jumped shipped to other stuff, leaving me to diddle myself solo and thinking about playing with strangers, which, since you can't talk to anyone without inviting to party, is a nightmare crapshoot. Will I get unbearable assholes barking orders and screaming at me if I die? Or worse, children? I'm an older gamer (33), very chill and relaxed and very much want the same in a Raid group. Reading the forums however it seems the majority of experienced Raiders would soon as piss on a noob than Raid with one (and maybe rightly so, I admit) so at this point it may be more enjoyable to go at it with other noobs. Who knows. Anywho. Any other Raid virgins out there? *EDIT* I'm on Xbox One for those that asked. Gamertag is same as here. I usually play late at night (10:30pm-3am CST) if any of you goons are night owls like me. *EDIT* Thanks for all the responses, guys. Was quite surprised to wake up to 400+ replies. And thanks especially to those offering to help myself and all the other Raid noobs in need, across all systems. You guys are dope. **UPDATE!!!** Went through the Raid for the first time tonight with a buddy, 3 randoms from the Forums (thanks dudes!) and one lvl 30 shining angel of cockness who showed up out of nowhere to carry our noob asses across the finish line with Atheon, and then to top it off, took my buddy and I through a couple of his hard mode checkpoints with his friends so we could get a bit more loot. In about 2 hours I came away Praedyth's Revenge, Corrective Measure, Found Verdict and a Raid chest piece for my Hunter, plus Chatterwhite and ascendant materials. Not too shabby. It was a lot of fun too, very chill and easy going group with the exception of one dude who bounced after a wipe but it turned out to be for the best. I still have a lot to learn though, the lvl 30 guy and his friends were ridiculous pros at it so I didn't have to do much. So you other guys that were reticent like me to hook up with strangers, I say go for it. I'm pretty stoked to go again so you guys sending me messages, keep hitting me up!

  • I still haven't done it yet. I just don't have the time or enough friends willing to attempt it. However, I did do that glitch where you can get into the vault solo, but you can't really do much in there by yourself :/

  • My reason is below but first as to people online. I have met a few very chill people and I know other people who have similarly met and raided with some really chill folks who were quite happy to spend days on the same raid trying to co-ordinate a bunch of raid virgins against Aetheon. My suggestion, hit the strike playlist and keep an eye for anyone who has a similar play style than you or a style that compliments you. I find that a lot of personality comes through in play and the people on my friends list I met via strikes because afterwards I though Good Game and I know that it was in large part who I was playing with. I think in general most people are really just looking for a good game. I have not run the raid and I had no intention of doing it. I have had a recent invite to participate and I went a 'uh sure' but the party didn't get past four so it didn't happen. So in truth I might stumble into a raid group and I might not however I am really glad you asked why because this is something that I had wanted to share. Why I had never planned on doing the Raid. When I heard that the first group had made it through in like 11 hours and that the central premise was that the player had no f'ing clue what they were doing I crossed the raid off of my to do list. To me a game is simply a set of rules oriented around an activity, and I do not play games where the rules are unknown. The very notion that the raid was designed so that the first group of people would be required to die over and over again just to figure out the rules is (to me) absurd. This makes death entirely pointless. At least with a game like dark souls death is a part of the game mechanic and part of the story. But here it is simply throwaway re-spawns jumping off a cliff of the unknown where death is certain. Don't get me wrong, I understand that characters die that it is the mechanic. But in theory, if I was a total rock star of a player it is conceivable that I could play the entire story without dying. It is possible (though totally not likely) to even unlock the crucible and not have a single death (I know it wouldn't happen but it is physically possible). However from what I have learned of the raid no matter how good you are even if you had played the entire game on a single life, the Raid would have killed you because dying in the raid is how the raid tutorial seems to work. I find this kind of game design offensive. Again don't get me wrong, I understand other people like it and that is great I have no problem with games being made that I personally am offended by as long as we have diversity I am cool with just not doing things I don't want to do. This leads us to the current situation where the internet is now so saturated with strategies and walk-throughs that no one else can have the same experience as those who first did it. All the strategies and even the Sherpas are just separating the end experience further and further from the designed experience and this I find, not offensive but questionable. I am ambivalent about it I guess I would say. That leads me to a place where I (once again) have to invent my own narrative for this game. It seems that given how the community reacted that a bunch of volunteers went first to spelunk the vault and come back with tales of the content. Which is then disseminated and the community works together helping each other up the hill and this is sort of great in way. I suppose on some level I just wish that it had been presented this way, as a challenge that the entire community would need to rally around to complete. Because apart from those first six adventurers has anyone done the raid without some help or information that was directly or indirectly from those first six? As it is if I do the raid it will not be me and five others doing the raid it will be the six of us on the ground with the full support of google, bungie.net and all of those who have braved the vault before us and chosen to discuss the mysteries within. It's a collective business and that is pretty cool. My point: I don't have one. As mentioned I am ambivalent. I don't want to do the raid but I do want to participate in this epic journey as the community joins forces to defeat the darkness one raid at a time. But then I want an event where for a week or so the tower is under attack and everyone who logs in can just forget about the crucible or strikes and instead defend the wall as a community for days on end and when the dust clears for the world to be changed forever.

    • Did the raid first time yesterday with a group of guys who took pity on a virgin - we had to stop at Atheon (got late in the UK and folks in the US had other commitments), but due to finish it tonight. A lot to take in for the uninitiated. Toughest part I found was the teleporting at the atheon battle - one time especially when I got zapped from mars to Venus on my own after doing the oracles. I died alone in the dark in a corner feeling like I was on bad acid. Good fun though!

    • Raid Virgins... Lol.. If any of you have PS4's. My PSN ID is Real_iLL420. Add me, send a message letting me know you HAVEN'T done the raid and I'll run raids with you when ever I can. I'll even set the fireteam up. I'm a lvl 29 warlock (would be 30 if RNGesus would stop hating on me). I've done the raid a bunch of times, would be happy to play tour guide.

    • Seriously my last try. I have posted a couple times .. Not one response. Have never legitimately tried the raid. I'm a level 29 maxed out all around. I have snuck in to the Vault and have been able to defend the first conflux and then it's pretty much impossible. I don't have a Suros Regime or an IceBreaker. Really want to do this raid... After years of playing COD I actually just returned AW this week for store cred which I will use towards Destiny DLC. Really like this game a lot... Just need friends. I'm an old goat.. 32. I have a Mic ... Xbox one.

Raid virgin here. I've been putting off doing the raid forever, but want to give it a shot. I'm on xbox one. I have no friends that have this game on this platform so it's been tough for me finding a full raid group. I'd appreciate some help. Maxed-out subclasses for Warlock, but prefer Sunsinger. Level 28. I don't know anything about the raid so bear with me, but I'm a decent player. My gamertag is the same as my username. Thanks guys!

        • I have been on the raid, but just the tip was inserted, so not sure if I am still a virgin... I dont enjoy it much due to the time needed to run it, even with a solid group. I like the 15-20 min-n-out of Strikes/Crucible. I like the gear I have, now max without raid gear and just fine with my game.

              • So glad to see a thread like this. I have a wife and kid and only get to play whenever they are asleep lol. I play on 360 and most of my rlf are on psn. I have one question that I'm hoping someone can answer. How long should a normal run take. I've wanted to do a raid but have no idea how much time I might need to set aside/convince the wife I'd need. Anyways gamer tag is the same as above if anyone needs a mature player for anything. Thanks all

                • If anyone is available, I will be running a relaxed raid session for newcomers on the XB1 as soon as I get a full team. I will take the time and teach everyone in the group each part of the raid. I will respect everyone regardless of age, gender, or skill lvl and expect the same in return. My only requirements are: Lvl 27+ Have a mic ( if you feel stressed in a social setting then all I require is that you listen) Have 1-2hrs of space to work with. I will be patient and ask that all players be with each other. I can only take 5 so please send me a message on X1. If I cannot fit you in today I will try to find a slot for you another day.

Thanks for this thread... I've done the raid multiple times (20+) but from reading it my raid team have taken it upon ourselves to essentially run people through VoG for the first time once a week. We put myself in with my lv30, 2 others from my group then use their lv 25/26 to lv them up. We then put an ad out for 3 more people with the caveat we preferred inexperienced or ppl that had only run it once or twice or never properly. So last night we had a raid virgin, a guy who'd done it twice n a guy who had done it 5/6. Review: lots of fun for our 2 lower levelled exp guys as they had to think more, the guy who'd done it 5/6 was good, the guy who'd done it twice n claimed he knew how to wield a relic was dreadful but after 45 mins on atheon finally figured out how to do it! The Virgin picked it up really quick so massive props to him and he was really thankful and happy to get chatter white which made quite a refreshing change. Tl:dr - help out virgins - they are normally really appreciative!

                  • I will tell you I took someone from these forums through the RAID last night on Normal and walked him through it and helped him understand the mechanics of the game and we live streamed it. I just sent him the video so he would have it for reference. I would like to say to everyone be at least a 27 and the reason I say that its not talking negative of anyones skills or anything. Its just the enemy puts out alot of damage and you will not damage them as much as a level 26. I hope that didnt offend anyone because this post isnt about that. I am someone that helps as much people I can to get through the RAID to get there weekly stuff complete.
