+ 1000 for Texas. Texas passes abortion bill.

Texas passes a bill for tougher restrictions on abortion. The bill bans abortions after the 20th week of pregnancy, require doctors to have admitting privileges at nearby hospitals, limit abortions to surgical centers and stipulate doctors must monitor even non-surgical abortions. The first requirement of the bill is for all abortions to take place in surgical centers, facilities designed to cope with major surgeries that could lead to life-threatening complications. The majority of abortions are not surgical procedures, and 37 of the state's 42 abortion clinics don't meet that new standard, so many would need to relocate and spend millions of dollars to reach it. Those five remaining clinics are in Dallas, Austin, San Antonio and two in Houston. A woman living along the Mexico border or in West Texas would have to drive hundreds of miles to obtain an abortion if the law passes. Women who may currently take abortion-inducing pills at home would also be required to take those medications in front of the doctor by making visits to the surgical center under the bill. Abortion doctors also would need to obtain admitting privileges within 30 miles of the clinic under the measure. The lone remaining abortion clinic in Mississippi is currently suing to block this law because no hospitals in the state will grant privileges to an abortion doctor for religious reasons or to avoid political repercussions.

  • You know what, I've come to the point where I just really don't give a -blam!- about this. I'm sorry but we have more important things for our country to see to than abortion legislation.

    • Great PR for Republicans. Rick Perry will be trumpeting his accomplishment here when he runs in 2016. Get ready for another GOP circus as they choose their candidate to run for president.

      • This isn't going to stop abortions. Just makes them more un-safe and creates a new black market. Hooray Texas!

        • Good. If you don't want a baby then either use protection, take medication, or refrain from sex all together. Abortions should only be permitted in cases of -blam!- and incest or if the mother will die/become sick, the baby will die/become sick, or if the baby will develop mental/physical handicaps.

            • Well, now that Texas has solidified the fact that they give more rights to unborn fetuses than actual human beings, I think it's time to call up my friends and family living and stationed there to tell them to get out of that god-forsaken state.

                • I honestly think that once it reaches the third tri-mester, they should not be allowed to abort. Unless their life is in danger, of course. Not even religious people can argue against that, since it's actually in the Bible. (Don't rage because I said the word Bible, like people always do.)

Good! It's about time that a reasonable law was passed on this, it's either been too arbitrary in banning it outright which stops medically necessary ones and the soft approach in which it is too damn easy to end a human life. (Even though it isn't easy to start with) Abortion is sometimes a necessary evil, but it shouldn't be the answer to unplanned pregnancies.

It's a victory for human rights in the same way the Three Fifths Compromise was. In the end we're still a society that's okay with killing unborn humans largely for non-medical reasons.

It's a step in the right direction, honestly. I'm not pro-life on a legislative level, but I absolutely do not agree with how often abortions are utilized. The worst part is that abortion is (ironically) defended under the guise of human rights. And honestly, this really doesn't stop that many abortions. Any abortion under five months is still legal. There is plenty of time to realize that you're pregnant. Five missed periods is pretty noticeable.
