Okay, to be fair... not strictly unplayable. It's fine on some days. But others? Not so much. The forced appearance of Champions on randomized rotators just doesn't work on some days when you're playing solo with modifiers like, say, Grapple on. With the new changes removing the ability to stack anti-Champion effects on guns like Wicked Implement we're left having to rely on specific abilities and subclass verbs... but what happens when, say, the Grapple modifier suddenly removes that? Let's use my current Warlock build, for example. Arc would normally give me Flashbang Grenades with Jolt. That covers Unstoppable and Overload. With guns I can cover exactly two Champion types. Only four of the current Featured exotics have intrinsic anti-Champion, and none of them are Heavy weapons if I want to go for max rewards and we have no artifact mod to cover that slot, either - meaning that if I try to play to the horrific New Gear modifiers I can only cover two Champion types with my weapons. Normally not a problem if I can leverage my Grenade and Melee appropriately to use my subclass verbs. Okay. So what happens when the Quickplay option that has my bonus drop yanks one of those critical buildcrafting options out of my hand, and I can no longer plan for a Champion type I may just randomly get through no control of my own? Ionic Senty works but that requires kills you don't always have, and you're screwed if you fail to burn the Champion on a single try. It's fine during days when something like the triple Grapple mod isn't up, but it's clear that this was designed for the Fireteam Ops playlist where you have teammates to rely on. This just doesn't work in Solo Ops. They need a different set of modifiers on for Quickplay if they're going to include Champions with an artifact like the one we currently have if they want to try and force this New Gear crap, or they need to do one better and remove New Gear's soft sunsetting entirely.
