Fanfiction - Duality Page 2: A Ship! No Drive.

The duo set out across Mars's dunes to find a ship. Cardinal wasn't sure where all the space rhinos went, but her little light assured her that they would be safer once they got to Earth. "Have you decided on a name yet?" he had asked as they trekked. Cardinal shook her head. She didn't know her name yet. "Oh well. It'll come to you eventually. My name's Candel." Cardinal snickered. "Candel? As in candle? Ironic." "Believe me, the irony is not lost on me." After three hours they finally found a ship. It was in surprisingly good condition considering how old it was, or at least that's what Candel told her. Apparently it was a Forerunner v6A. Cardinal would just call it the Forerunner. "There's just one problem," Candel said after scanning the ship. "Someone ripped out the jump drive." "So... no Earth?" "No Earth. At least not yet. We'll just have to find one ourselves. At least we can use the ship to scan Mars." Cardinal nodded, then spotted a tower far off in the distance. "We could use a signal booster there to widen our scans." Candel looked in the direction she pointed, then to her. "Yeah... we could! I thought you were a Hunter." "A what?" "A Hunter. A type of guardian. Quick on their feet and handy with weapons. You're smart like a Warlock though. Hunters aren't known for their brains..." Cardinal mulled this over. "So... I've got to choose between smarts and guns?" "No, no!" The little spark laughed. "You just surprised me is all." For a few minutes, Candel flitted around the ship, muttering this and scanning that. From what Cardinal could tell, he was connecting power back to the thrusters and repairing the wires around the jump drive core, the part missing. Once he was done the ship hummed to life, and she was suddenly in the cockpit. "What the...?" "Transmat. Don't ask how." "Oookay, not asking then." Cardinal took a moment to learn the controls and get used to the ship, but everything already felt familiar, like she had sat here before. She shrugged off the strange feeling she had before turning the ship to the tower in the distance and turning on the main thrusters.
