RPC Stories #10: Last Minute Preparations

Contrast stands and watches his mercenaries walk under the pure white sky of the Inter-dimensional Market while holding the chicken that he had received from the raid of Gray Sector. The small army of men move and organize crates and containers filled with supplies and weapons of countless realms. Repetition and Proximity walk towards Contrast. Repetition: “Statement: Our troops are mobilizing and getting our supplies in order, master, but are you sure it is wise to begin the attack on the Reckoners so suddenly? It has only been a day since we were defeated by Alignment.” Contrast: “With the new supplies we have now, we should be completely prepared. We can’t delay any longer. They could reawaken at any moment.” Proximity: “The sooner we get this done, the better. But even with our newfound supplies, do we really stand a chance? If Paradisum at its peak wasn’t enough to stop them, what chance do we have?” Contrast: “Paradisum left a massive wound in their fleet. If we can infiltrate their commanding ship that we found, we can easily destroy it and the Reckoners.” Proximity: “But it’s been 2 years since Paradisum fell. In that amount of time, I’m sure they could have restored themselves.” Contrast: “If they did, they would be more active. Besides, time works differently between realms. You should know that by now. We should be fine.” Repetition: “Observation: Master, it seems that some of our organic mercenaries disagree.” A few of the mercenaries stray from the large group and walk towards Contrast with looks of anger covering their faces. One of them moves forward in front of Contrast while the rest stop. Leader Merc: “So, you’re telling us that we’re supposed to infiltrate a high tech ship filled with enemies we don’t even know about that could potentially kill us all right after we were led into a practical death trap?” Contrast: “Well, that’s not exactly what I said, but I suppose that’s close enough.” Leader Merc: “You’re crazy! You really think that we‘ll succeed now that we have a few new shiny fruits?” Contrast: “If you have any problems with the assignment that you were hired to do, then I suggest that you quit. I don’t see why you’re making such a fuss.” Leader Merc: “You haven’t even paid us yet! Where’s the reward that you promised us?” Contrast: “As I said before, you’ll get your reward once we complete this mission. That is, unless you decide to take my advice and quit.” Leader Merc: “I’ve got a better idea.” The mercenary and the others behind him pull out their laser rifles and point them at Contrast. Repetition and Proximity are on guard. Repetition: “Warning: Think carefully about your next actions, organics, and your pathetic little lives might continue for a few more moments.” Contrast: “Calm down, Repetition. I have this under control.” Contrast slowly walks around with his cane in his right hand and the chicken wrapped in his left arm. Contrast: “So, what’s-yer-name, you seem pretty confident that this situation will end in your favor. I suppose that means that you don’t know what my ability is.” Leader Merc: “I don’t need to know. We have you cornered.” Contrast: “Ha! No wonder you lost at Gray Sector! Since I pity you so much, I’ll give you a quick breakdown of what I can do.” Leader Merc: “Stay there and stop moving.” Contrast: “I assure you that it’s nothing too complicated. All it does is allow me to change an object into something completely different. For example, I could turn your lasers into clouds, or your armor into a vile liquid. I could even turn this little chicken—“ Leader Merc: “Stay there!” Contrast: ... Chicken Attack! Contrast throws the chicken at the group of rebellious mercenaries and it morphs into a hideous and slimy amalgamation with several tentacles and a mouth full of sharp teeth. Before the armed men could fire, the newly formed monster extends its vile appendages towards their necks and twists them. The mercenaries die instantly and the monster consumes the corpses in seconds. Contrast: “A shame. They could have proved useful... somehow.” Proximity: “This isn’t good. The more troops we lose, the more the odds are stacked against us.” Contrast: “Don’t worry. I’ve hired a very intriguing person that should be here any moment now. I met him during a “class” that Alignment had made. He shows promise.” A door suddenly appears and opens behind the trio. From it comes an Exo wielding a crimson sword. He walks forward while Contrast has a smile on his face. Contrast: “Welcome. I’ve been looking forward to seeing you again.” ???: “Likewise.” The Exo looks towards Repetition and Proximity. He throws his crimson sword forward and it morphs into a shape reminiscent to a dog while changing into a darker shade of red. ???: “I never got the chance to introduce myself. I am known as Dragoon-647. Pleased to make your acquaintance.”
Fades Away
