Escalation protocol also gives you 1 piece of gear and no one complained when it came out.
Hell you dont even know what you're going to get AND you gotta grind the bosses for a specific gun with a CHANCE of dropping

*sees you have 1 year on bungie* Well ignoring that I can tell you for a fact that from DAY ONE people were -blam!- about EP drops and it’s difficulty and the complaining didn’t get better as the week went on. I know because I was there grinding the shit out of EP every day

The gear didn't have random rolls. The grind wasn't that bad for great weapons and armor and they left the repeating high level protocol in after they patched it. Now with random rolls, you can't min max your builds, which the chest exploit granted. Hours and hours of time going for one piece of gear to hopefully get the exact roll your looking for was what kept people coming back then to a playlist to farm for runes to do it again.
