F*** my luck that Thorn strike is difficult!

Have tried the strike multiple times now. Playing with friends didn't make it past the doors. Made multiple attempts after fireteam matchmaking on this companion with some good players also 700light and every time killed at boss level by thrall/yellow bar knights. Running solar middle tree titan. Breakneck, retold tale and Thunderlord. Any tips or suggestions for better loadout?

  • All because they are 700 light doesn't make them good. Anyone can reach 700 if you do your weeklies

I'm not great at pve by any means, and two randos and I did it first try. Bring a warlock with radiance well for clutch revives. My teammates went down in the center and I got walled off by the last knight, even his stomp mechanic couldn't kill me and it lasts just short of the self revive timer. Have a void and arc ranged elemental weapon ready to switch out on the fly to bust the yellow bar shields. That's how we did it anyways.

    • There’s a cheese spot you can have a friend go to and basically 2 man the last part without having to wipe. It takes awhile but it a guaranteed completion.

      • I joined a group from LFG last week to complete this quest. I used my hunter, bottom tree golden gun with nighthawk. The other two ran a tether hunter and nova bomb warlock. The whole strike took us an hour and a half. Most wipes were caused because we missed a thrall or two and they wrecked us. I was using breakneck, inaugural address and hammerhead, but ended up switching to thunderlord, i think.

      • Don't kill Savathun before the knights and wizard spawn in. You have to kill them first. The mission end timer starts as soon as you kill the main boss. We failed because of that on our first run. Take a warlock with Nova Bomb, that will help.

      • I play solo and got to the two shriekers that are shielded. As all my ammo dwindled and wasn't replenished, despite Special and Heavy perks, I decided to shelve the idea after the 3rd respawn. I'll probably just sub contract the strike completion to my kid in lieu of doing chores

      • It was fun... would like to see more of them. there is a huge wall between nightfall and this strike. In strikes/nightfall you are just shooting mindless, but in this Thorn strike you need to use a strategy!)

      • I soloed it to the last encounter before boss (where two turrets are), and stuck. Got two randoms from LFG and we did it pretty easy on the first try. I played support lock, randoms was GG hunters. Be patient, you have time. Focus on survival, boss doesn't go away. Focus on knights and thralls, use big barricades, maybe even bubble. Live. Clear all mobs before next phase.

Ok so I tackled it a again last night for myself this time and found it a lot easier. The load out I used: Hunter Blade Barrage Mountaintop Recluse Whisper Load out my teammates used: Hunter BB Hunter Tether Grenade launcher (heavy) Sorry don’t know the rest We just took it nice and slow. Had 2 doing most the killing (the Recluse is amazing for small ads and the mountaintop is good on the yellow bars) and 1 hanging back doing the living so we didn’t get wiped. Got to the boss fight with out to much trouble. For the boss fight had 1 guy stand on the cheese spot. It’s on the left hand side of the boss over the cliff. My teammate basically covered me when I put DPS into the boss with the Whisper. It’s all fairly straight forward until just after the ogres which I take out with the Mountaintop. If you don’t have that a sniper might work well. But once they are down and the boss moves all shit brakes out becausehe starts firing those axion darts at you. Ideally both of you want to get to the very top left hand hill and hide behind the top rock. Crouch and take out as many adds as possible then DPS boss with Whisper. He’ll teleport to the back middle and get a shield and those 2 nights spawn in. Push down the hill fast BB the closest one and move to entrance. Finish the first night while hiding from the boss. After this it all got a bit chaotic and this is where our cheese man was invaluable because we would have wiped 10 times over. My teammate managed to take out the other night with Tether and GL when I was dead. Clear the ads kill the wizard and Tether Hunter goes invis and picks up the orb. But don’t try and dunk it, fall back to cover and take out the other 2 Wizards that spawn in. They kept dodging my Mountaintop so by the time they were down our Hunter had her invis back. Go invis dunk the orb. DPS boss with whisper and BB for a easy finish. Don’t know why it took me 1 hour 40 minutes the first time!

        • i feel your pain. i'm sitting at 698 and tried it with 2 people around 680. we made it to the boss pretty easily. then it was just wipe after wipe after wipe. and 98% of the time it was from stupid thrall. the other 2% was the stupid heat seeking balls of death that the boss shoots out at you. i ran a pulse, Arc sniper to break knights shields, and Sleeper. i was the lone warlock, other 2 were hunters. but it doesn't really matter. healing rift and/or well of radiance does absolutely nothing. the thrall just rush in and 1 hit kill you.

        • Scholar Mind has placed a cheat below.
If you walk all the way to the right of the arena then you look right you will see a little ledge you can walk on too. You can only go out so far but if you go out enough nothing can shoot you or hurt you. Also make sure that the on on the ledge is a hunter since the hunter sit emote gets you down really low. But DONT DO THIS WHEN THE BOSS IS THERE!!! There is infinite lives. Your welcome.
Don't stand near the door. You end up getting flanked on both sides by thrall. What worked for my group of randoms was after the boss leaves that area move to the right side of the map. There's less cover but because of that and the slight elevation of the platform you can see any thrall approaching as they run at you. From there one player (which with no communication meant I decided was me) makes it their job to kill every thrall they see immediately. Inbetween waves of thrall go ahead and peck at the boss. We failed like three times when we got to the boss but as soon as I moved we beat it on the first try.

        • Ok so there’s some vids that show the spot specifically: but there’s a cheat spot where, if you go down there, you won’t take any damage. So one of your team go down to that little hidey spot, and the other two, even if they get killed they’ll eventually wipe the room and bam win.

        • Well of radiance is essential. Multiple if you can manage. I ran the stag so that I always had a rift on deck, but Phoenix protocol would probably also do the trick.

3x breakneck/recluse 3x Whisper 1 Well of radiance w/phoenix protocol 1 Tether w/orpheus 1 titan bubble (optional) Try to instantly burn down boss to 1/3 at the start, wipe out the knights, finish boss before the orb phase.

        • There is a safe spot on the top left where the ogres spawn. Have one guy stand there and nothing can get to him. The other two guys can just chip away at the adds/boss with no risk of a wipe. Theres actually two safe spots there just google them.

          • Bring a trapper hunter and nova or well lock Have the other two focus the boss when it's vulnerable while you watch for thrall. This is super important in the latter stages. Past that it's pretty simple if you can melt the knights fast.

One nova bomb will kill big knight. Fight from center until pushing to back. Then have one guy left one right. There is really good cover on left and right. Guy in middle deals with thrall breakneck is good option for him. Left guy takes left knight. Right guy takes right knight. Clear most enemies and make the move once stuff is killed to drop shield and kill boss. Pretty easy once you can put that strategy together. My team composition recommendation two warlocks nova bomb and a tether hunter invisibility dodge is nice.

Maybe try bottom tree Sunbreaker with Hallowfire Heart? The Sunspots should give good area denial against the Thrall and great uptime on your abilities Definitely recommend at least one Void Hunter if possible. Great for keeping themselves alive in what might otherwise be a team wipe
