Tried teaching the last wish raid today and it was a pretty frustrating experience. Not only have the people that joined not watched a video. They also left after a couple tries. They were even more impatient than the most elitist raiders I’ve encountered. And apparently my accent wasn’t helping in trying to explain the encounter.
All in all the most frustrating experience I’ve ever had in a raid.

Some people have questioned if my way of explaining the mechanics were good enough. Here is how I explained the Kalli encounter, which we haven't been able to finish. If there is anything unclear about my explanation, let me know.
"Everyone go to the middle. You see these symbols? pick one and stand under it for now. Look up and remember the symbol you're standing under. These same symbols will be above platforms on the outer ring of this arena. You need to find that symbol and stand on the plate. However the plate is separated in 3 segments, 2 of which will have a blight over it. You want to find the segment without a blight over it and stand on it. After a short while the blights will explode and reappear above different segments. you'll need to find the segment without a blight again. You'll keep doing that until a night spawns. you kill the knight and go to the middle of this room. Once everyone is in the middle the damage phase will begin. At some point Kalli will put her arms up and cast a spell. That's when the doors beneath her feet will open. We'll read the door numbers like you would read a book. You pick the door that has the same number as your position on the roster. We do the damage phase 3 times, and if we haven't killed her during that the cycle starts again. Does anyone have any questions?"

2 RepliesI did LW for the first time last week without watching videos, but to be fair we had a really patient group (3 newbies) and explained everything fully, it took us 5 hours but nobody got frustrated or rage quit, it's a rare thing!

You shouldn't have to watch a guide. Introduce Story mode Raids, after Worlds First completion so that beginners can get a tutorial as well as experience the story elements. No revive tokens, no enrage wipe mechanics, with matchmaking. No rewards besides the milestone powerful drop after Final Boss defeat.

25 RepliesEdited by GrifterDeMier01: 1/6/2019 2:46:34 AMOr maybe Bungie should stop making raids 45-60 minute events even with well geared experienced players. And stop filling them with incredibly annoying bull shit puzzles and platforming mechanics. Why do you think hardly any one does them? They are just not fun at all to the majority of people. Just make them like harder nightfalls with bigger stronger boss fights and remove all the pointless puzzles and platforming objectives. Ppl always say they hate bullet sponge type fights.... I ask why? It's a shooter, just shoot the -blam!-ing enemies. Having to have the whole fire team split up and go finish different objectives while having to fend off endless hoards of enemies is sooooooooo -blam!-ing dumb!!!!

Edited by Unbreakable Patches: 1/8/2019 2:40:37 AMWatching a video is nigh useless without being able to actually experience the thing you’re watching. Having a general idea doesn’t mean anything compared to actually having solid experience. Not to mention pretty much every encounter for any given raid is ultimately simple enough that whatever explanation you’d get vocally from your fireteam members would likely more than suffice.

4 RepliesHere’s my problem with people watching a video, back in D1 I would Sherpa through every raid, I knew every raid like the back of my hand, I knew the most efficient way to do each encounter and optimal loadouts for whatever encounter we happened to be on. One night I was taking a team through Wrath (my favourite destiny raid so you better believe I knew everything about it) we got the siege engine and I explained how the encounter works, I told them about both path ways but this one guy on my team insisted that everyone use the upper path way, even though about half the team (including him) were new comers, apparently he watched a video and considered himself an expert in the raid... well this same expert ignored my instructions and took the upper path, every single time he’d die, or he’d mess up and let the part fall into the void and then blame us for not following him. Eventually I told him that he has to do it the safer way or I’ll kick him, he shut up and followed instructions and we got the encounter done. Moral of the story, videos are great and all but they shouldn’t always be the teacher, because guides in videos are very rarely the best way to do an encounter (yes I know upper is better but again we had newbies and I wanted them to take the safer route) and that’s simply because the guide makers tend to upload the videos right away.

1 ReplyI actually watched video but it can be difficult first time and then get to used
-
3 RepliesI’ve done hundreds of raids and have never watched a video.. to me sharing knowledge player to player is part of the whole raid experience.. I’d rather wipe a few times and slowly let the player figure out each encounter than tell them to go watch a video

6 RepliesNo. I never watch a guide before going into a raid. I look for other spoiler free peeps and we knock it out every time. You do realize how incredibly boring it is to have every mechanic and fight described to you before you get to experience it, right? I mean, why play if you can just watch.... After I complete, sure I don’t mind looking for better strategies, but playing a game is what I paid for. That said, I also never told a group I knew what I was doing if I didn’t. That’s my only pet peeve with people. If you don’t know just say so and it’s no big deal.

y would I watch stoopid video it takes time. 🐒I rather waste everyones time cuz im stopid and dont understand shit
-
Whoever said you didn’t explain the encounters well enough are seriously stupid I’ve run multiple people thru who I knew were competent, and didn’t have to say much because they watched the video before I’ve never seen someone be an asshole while trying to learn a raid. they would get booted at lightning speed

2 RepliesWhen I do raids for the first time I watch Datto’s videos beforehand to understand the mechanics then follow whatever strat the rest of the team is going with and the raid is cleared no problem.
-
2 RepliesD2 players: "I wanna go into my first raid run blind!" D2 Players after their 1st raid completion: "If this is your first raid run, why haven't you watched a video on how to run the raid?!"

4 RepliesEdited by Mjholniir: 1/6/2019 11:16:22 PMI have tried every raid encounter only once since D1. Well exept the last one, wich tbh dont apeal to me. Normally i watch a video for dummies to get a general idea of what to do. But when i look at lfg i dont even wanna try to join a group, the requirements for most of them are insane. 1 week after last wish dropped it was expected that you had several clears to join, and with my 1 clear....well. Would i like to raid more? Ofc. As an adult player i have patience, and the skill to listen and learn from those who know the game. Youtube is nice for the raid encounters to make life a litle easyer, and i only use it to not screw up for my team mates. (Atleast not to much) After all this is just a game, a game should be used to relax a litle. We have enough stress in RL than to be bothered with it in a game. The day a game gets frustrating and not enjoyable, well thats the day i quit playing it.

By that logic you are not a sherpa... :p

I feel like you might be over explaining and if they are having trouble getting it maybe focus on a mechanic at a time. First we determine teams of 2 and then decide which of the 3 symbol spots each team is responsible for. Then they will find their plate based on these symbols. Explain to them to stand on the part of their plate that doesn't have blights and that if they have trouble with their knight need to call it out so the first people done can help. Then explain your goal is after every damage phase these teams will look at their same starting symbol location to know what the next symbol is for them. Damage phase is damage phase, but for the doors preset players numbers, 1-6 so that no-one gets confused which door they go to, 1 will always get the top left most door, then 2 working left to right top to bottom. The fact you've had this much trouble getting past Kali is super discouraging, because it is the easiest part of the Raid.

7 RepliesHow about you teach better.....
-
3 RepliesEdited by Tufcat: 1/6/2019 6:47:44 AMHands on experience > watching videos Shame you got the impatient batch but in a mechanics heavy activity there is no better way to learn than to see for how it works for yourself Goes without saying you're going to invite experienced people for your next team since you had to make a post about new raiders
-
6 RepliesIt'll be a cold day in hell when I watch yt to "learn" how to play a game.
-
41 RepliesNah, why do people say "I'll teach you" when they are trash teachers and don't actually want to put the effort in? My only clear of LW, was last minute and I never watched a guide, only wiped one so it's all down to the teacher.
-
I actually enjoy teaching raids so I could care less wether they know what to do or not. Unless of course I don’t have time
-
1 ReplySome people want to raid with as few spoilers as possible.
-
2 Replies...if you're teaching a raid, why should they have to watch a video beforehand? That's the whole point of you reaching the raid.
-
3 RepliesWow all of these entitled comments make me sick, no wonder the Elite's post such high requirements for there raids, you scrubs who say I don't have to watch a video, someone should teach me, are the real down fall of raids and the reason lfg requirements are so high
-
1 ReplyA guide and video can only do so much, nothing beats first hand experience. Did the new raid last week, 4 people didn’t know what to do and we haven’t read any guide but made it all the way to the end relatively easily. Got stuck on the 2nd phase boss but finished it the next day within an hour. Guide and videos are unnecessary if the person explaining everything does it clear and well and has some patience, the ones learning also need some patience. Your not going to clear it after learning it right away
